we talk a lot about the importance of the first Copa engagement. was truly ground breaking for the group

but what if Berry had NOT been able to get them booked? were there other clubs at the time that might have offered the same jumping off point?

Radio City. I wonder if Lincoln Center was ever recorded?

Maybe a West Coast club like the Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel might have worked. But it seems like Berry knew to get into the nightclub circuit, he had to go through Jules Podell and then the word would spread.

Hollywood Bowl. The Beatles had a live Bowl concert recording, but they didn't need to cement their stardom. But Berry Gordy was targeting the "grown-ups", so it was the Copa. Cocoanut Grove might have worked, too.

great points all - i wonder if given their huge teen popularity if they could snagged a big gig at Hollywood bowl and broadcast some or all on tv. and then from their jump into clubs
