Some of these tracks are just music with no vocals or songs such as One Way out
The Supremes vocals were over dubbed.
Some of the 70s tracks sound intesting

Am I Asking Too Much was on the Unreleased Masters CD, I believe

I wonder if This Is Where I Came In is the same song as the opening cut on Millie Jacksons "For Men Only" LP?

Good work! One question: Could "Soul Apple" actually be "Soul Appeal"?

carlo

Yeah some of these are inaccurate. As davidh mentioned, some have no vocals or are incomplete. Some of these are also rumoured and untrue, such as the unreleased RCA album listed as "Full Moon" from '83. The rumour of that one began years and years ago, from the old diana-web.com fan forum. There was a guy posting on there who claimed he had a handful of unreleased tracks from the Ross 83 album, some of which he said were called "Full Moon" and "Sleep With Me Tonight" [[supposedly the same song that Patti LaBelle later recorded). He said that fans could obtain the songs from him if they sent him money, and I believe a few fans did, and were scammed. He had no tracks and sent them nothing. So I believe that is where the rumour started in regards to the names of these Ross 83 outtakes. I don't think there's any truth to it, as I've never seen any official confirmation that those Ross 83 tracks exist??

Diana and Smokey could complete that album they were working on. Both are still alive and sounding good.

For Example - The Rolling Stones completed some tracks from the Some Girls sessions and included them on an expanded edition - they could do something akin to that.

Quickly glancing, I can share that "Darling Boy" from 1964 is actually "Darling Baby"--as in the Elgins' [[eventual) song.

danman869

Mr. Loneliness [[1969 unreleased track) - Reassigned to and recorded by Kiki Dee

Another Lonely Night [[1969 unreleased track) - Actually called "Another Lonely Night [[Completes Another Empty Day) - Reassigned to and recorded by Marv Johnson

Also, I believe that "I Want To Go Back There Again" assigned to The Supremes in the second half of 1969 was the same track eventually recorded by Syreeta/Rita Wright [[1970), Thelma Houston [[1971), and Diana Ross [[1972). It'd be great if Jean, Mary and Cindy DID record a version using the same track!

It is possible but unlikely. It doesn't sound a smooth fit for Diana, but what a great Millie album For Men Only is. I love just about every cut on that album. Pity it didn't sell well.

Probably not the same song. Millie's was written by Vicky Germaise and Randy Klein, who I also believe co-wrote her PHUCK U SYMPHONY.

According to the DFTMC site, a song with this same title was written by Jimmy Webb in 1965. It might be that one.

These were recorded around 76/77. High Inergy would go on to record and released them, presumably with the same backing track, as one of the members said that Diana recorded the songs before the group did. I figure if the songs were completed they'll end up on Ross 78 expanded. Whenever that is.

What intrigues me are the incomplete vocal songs. I wonder if the guys have ever considered taking some of these and fashioning them together in some sort of medley and adding them to an expanded edition.

I really hope that the rumored expanded versions of her 1989-1999 Motown albums will be released. Even if there are not many outtakes, these albums deserve to be remastered and put back in print. I would love it if the last two were also released on vinyl!

There are more outtakes than you would perhaps think. You may see them in the coming months. Most licensing issues have been overcome, but i am not sure if the greenlight has been authorised to proceed.
Don't think there will be a vinyl release i'm afraid. Cd for sure but no vinyl.

Thanks so much for the info - sounds great, especially if there are indeed quite a few outtakes. I'll happily take just the CD's [[my preferred format anyway), even though a vinyl debut of the latter two albums would have been really cool.

Fingers crossed that these releases will indeed happen this year!

According to the booklet of Lost & Found the 1968 versions of This Is Where I Came In are incomplete or not by the Supremes [[or maybe not found in the vaults yet!).

It was also the working title of You Can't Hurry Love in 1966.

Wow! If even a quarter of these exist, it would be lovely to hear them -- if the powers that be gets around to issuing more CDs! I worry that a few of the familiar titles were instrumentals intended for Diana Ross and The Supremes but given to others. There are many abandoned titles in the Motown catalog.

For instance, in Four Tops Forever, we learn that Stranded On The Road To Love was, initially, an instrumental track recorded for Diana Ross and The Supremes under the title It's Unbelievable in November 1968. The track was "reassigned" to Edwin Starr and his vocals were recorded under the title Pain From My Loneliness in April, June and August 1969. Then it was rewritten and reassigned to The Four Tops, who added their vocals in September 1969 with the final title.

On the other hand, the instrumental track for It's The Same Old Song was recorded on May 7, 1965 and was meant for The Supremes. A second track was cut on June 14, 1965, and The Supremes' vocals were cut later that month. However, the song, with its title and lyrics intact, shortly thereafter was reassigned to The Four Tops, whose vocals were overdubbed on July 7, 1965.

Don't Destroy Me and The Paper Said Rain are said to be the first two "working titles" for No Matter What Sign You Are, according to the booklet included with the group's pink velvet four-CD set.

The title I Just Want To Make You Happy exactly mirrors the spoken lines at the start of The Only Time I'm Happy, from More Hits; could those be the same song?

Bluebrock has hinted that there are a number of outtakes from Diana's albums during her second stint at Motown which may appear sooner rather than later.

I'm waiting with bated breath for any from The Force Behind The Power [[especially any ballads) - for me far and away Diana's very best album.

Great observations, Ben! I've noticed those kinds of connections, too, and have used them to create a smart playlist in my Apple Music called "Assigned To The Supremes" based on those very words. It's neat to imagine what could have been!

For many years, I've had an instrumental track in my collection called "I Just Want To Make You Happy" that I recognized as being the title of an unfinished Supremes song. It's definitely not "The Only Time I'm Happy"--not even at a slower/faster tempo or different key. It's a mid-tempo song with marimba used rather than vibes--but still very much the Motown Sound. It's possible that HDH [[if they wrote it--no info to that extent has escaped Motown's vaults!) came up with that title [["I Just Want To Make You Happy") and when this song got scrapped, they recycled the lyric phrase into the intro of "The Only Time I'm Happy." Oh, to have unlimited time to wade through the Motown vaults!

Hi Dan - good to see you on here again!

i've done that too, with a playlist. What tracks are on yours?
