JAI almost all of Motown smoked in those days. Women and men. Artists, musicians, and management. There are many pictures of the Motown people smoking. I remember when you could smoke in any club or bar you went into.

So many of our artists died from lung and throat cancer due to smoking. Paul Williams smoked also and smoking exacerbates sickle cell anemia, but unfortunately pre-1970 not much was known about sickle cell anemia and there was not an abundance of knowledge about the long term effects of smoking. Not to mention Motown artists were worked around the clock so they did not have access to health care. 16929

It was hard to find anyone in the entertainment business from the '50s & '60s who didn't smoke. It wasn't until the '70s that it was general knowledge that smoking was bad for your health. And the stories have been told many times that both Eddie Kendricks & Mary Wells loved to smoke [[and we lost both of them to cancer within months of each other in 1992).

I did read that during the time Diana Ross and Marvin were doing duets...Diana couldn't stand the smell of weed in the studio OR on Marvin and it's one of the reasons they didn't do more songs together...

There used to be television commercials where doctors encouraged smoking. They thought it helped with indigestion, etc.

She smoked at one time and it wasn't just cigarettes. Her problem was she was pregnant when working with Marvin.

Don't all those classic movies. It was the height of sophistication to have a cancer stick betwixt your digits. Cool, baby.

It was so accepted that as a 6,7, 8-year-old kid, I can remember running to the local store to buy them for adults and they would let me keep the change for candy.

Yeah, I remember the candy ones, but I also remember buying Salems, Winstons, Kools and even Lucky Strikes for relatives and neighbors. Cigarettes were like 35 cents a pack back then and you didn't have to show and ID to buy them.

Marvin smoked ALL of his life beginning as a teenager just like most everyone else.

I remember asking Martha Reeves for one of her cigarettes once. She made or rolled her own out of this fancy paper....hehehehehehehe! She doesn't smoke now and frowns on it. Same thing with Mary Wilson.

There a picture in TCMS 68 of Marvin and Tammi smoking backstage. I also saw a picture of her smoking with IIRC two members of the Rascals.

It's sad to see how many good artists have died because of nicotine addiction. Unfortunately, smoking is a hazardous and harsh drug that affects many people.

I agree with you. According to the statistics, 8 million people die from smoking per year. That's an enormous number. By the way, would Eddie have lived longer if she had vaped instead of smoking? What do you think? It's just an ironic question. I can imagine Eddie with an Air Bar Diamond Box-price [[https://nexussmoke.com/products/air-bar-diamond-box-20000-puff-disposable-vape) disposable cigarette with a strawberry flavor. If electronic cigarettes had been invented, she would've lived much longer.
