First time I heard it was now. It's nothing more than a safe little song for the teenage crowd as far as I can see. Not great, but not terrible. Doesn't touch "Night Fever" we had back then LOL!

Though the song is very annoyingly catchy, I don't think it's the lyrics [[as simple and repetitive as they may be) that have people in an uproar. It's the extreme use of autotune to conceal how inadequate the talent of the singer. Though to be fair, the company that produced it is the music industry equivalent of a vanity publishing house. This company is paid by whomever [[or their parents in this girl's case) to produce a song and video. I don't think it was meant to go into such wide circulation, but the video was discovered last week and it went viral. It helps that the song is very catch and the girl, while no performer or singer, is perfect for such a silly song and video. Several other songs from this company produced for teenagers with parents with money to burn have also seen huge increases in their youtube view counts since "Friday" went viral.
