Maybe my adjectives, 'gritty' and 'grungy', are not the best, however, imo, most of HDH's productions had a certain type of polished sophistication about them. Four come to my mind; however, as being not so sophisticated but actually funky:
"Nowhere to Run"-Martha & the Vandellas
"Love is Like an Itching in My Heart-the Supremes
"Something About You"- Four Tops
"Road Runner"-Jr. Walker & the All Stars
Get my drift?
Are there others that come to your mind?

Yes; H-D-H's work with Shorty Long on "Function At The Junction", "Call On Me" & "Night 'Fo Last" comes to mind as some of their most Funky productions.

Hey, Motown Eddie, I was not familiar with the last 2 Shorty Long outputs so I researched to listen to them. Definitely, I hear the funk in their production of "Night 'Fo Last." I was only familiar with "Call on Me" as done by the Four Tops; and this Shorty Long's version appeared to be similar. THANKS

"Nowhere to Run" has sophistication and funkiness in equal measure.

I love the way the chords played on the piano subtly change by the end of the song.

Have you noticed there are two mixes of "Road Runner"? In one of them, the piano is a lot more prominent than the other.

Thanks for the reminder about "You Lost the Sweetest Boy". It has been a long time since I've listened to it. Mary, the Funk Brothers, and those two vocal groups [[who would one day have their time) are tearin' up this song. It also brought to mind Martha & the Vandellas' "Quicksand" and "Heat Wave" as 2 other funky productions by HDH.

Chris Clark "Loves Gone Bad".....R Dean Taylor "Theres A Ghost In My House".
Where in the world was I back in the 1960s when "Love's Gone Bad" was released? Apparently I am the only one who had never heard this. Not only did I just listen to Chris Clark's version, but also listened to the Underdog's and young Michael Jackson's version. A killer song.

Isn’t it just?
The single mix of Chris Clark’s recording is a track that I use when auditioning audio equipment.
It’s no audiophile recording but it really puts a message across.
If I get that message during an audition, then the gear that I’m listening to has some good qualities.

"Too Many Fish in the Sea" by the Marvelettes was pretty funky for its time.

Nothing But Heartaches slams into you within the initial few seconds, strong drumming, immediate chorus and classic thumping Motown beat :)

"You're A Wonderful One" and as someone mentioned above "Baby Don't You Do It" by Marvin are driving and funky. Great tracks.
