Warner-Spector Records was a record label formed in 1974 as an outlet for Phil Spector Productions by Warner Brothers Records. Other than a new single by Cher -- "A Woman's Story" b/w a new version of "Baby I Love You", a new duet single by Cher & Nilsson -- "A Love Like Yours [[Don't Come Knocking Every Day", a new single by Darlene Love -- "Lord, If You're A Woman", and a new Dion LP -- "Born To Be With You" -- which went unreleased for a year and then released only in the U.K. on the Phil Spector International label, all the Spector-produced releases on Warner-Spector were reissues of product from Philles Records.

All the while she was recording the song, Phil was talking with a guy in the studio, looking at Darlene while laughing and joking, making her nervous as if they were making fun of her. No matter how perfect the take was, Phil was taking great pleasure in making her do it over and over while he wasn't even listening. Unfortunately, Phil was showing his jerk side that day. I can see why that negative experience would leave a bad taste for Darlene regarding "LIYAW." Pity, because her performance on that record is top-notch, as always.

Oh, God, yes! That was mentally abusive of Phil. Darlene finally had another chance at stardom. For Gamble & Huff to sell Darlene's new PIR contract right out from under her and, worse, back to Phil, of all people, was a lousy thing to do. I hold G&H just as dishonorable in that shenanigan as Phil was. Anything for the almighty dollar. It was as though Phil was using the old "If I can't have you, no one can" ploy, although in a strictly platonic way. Still, it was just as sick and manipulative as in a scorned lover's ploy. As much as I love '70s Philly Soul, I lost a lot of respect for G&H after learning that about them.

I didn't used to care for the Calhoon dance material, but now -- out of the blue -- I do! Funny how it works that way!

When Phil finished work on the Dion album, reviewers who received an Advance copy gave it a negative review, so Phil postponed its release for a year. He was afraid to release it for fear the reviewers and public would slam it [[which is the exact reason he didn't release all of those fantastic Philles Rare Masters tracks. He was simply paranoid, and after his name was being trashed by those in the industry, who could blame him?). I've gotta admit, some of those Warner-Spector releases are very confusing. Take, for example, the Dion album. The book I used as a source lists it as having been released. Yet, all texts I've read say that, after holding up the album's release for a year, it was released -- and in the U.K. only -- on the Phil Spector International [[PSI) label. The U.S. did not get a release on Warner-Spector nor PSI. We had to purchase it as an import [[and at import prices) on PSI. By the 1990s, however, people were discovering Dion's album and raving about its content, just as they did with the Philles Christmas album. It was not a big seller at first, yet by the '70s, once people became aware of it, original copies on the Philles label were exchanging hands for $50 and up [[which, by now, are commanding up to $1,000 for a Still Sealed copy). It's amazing what a record can do once it gets some airplay and word-of-mouth action!

Then I bought Richard Williams "Out Of His Head" book which started me collecting Spector though I already had a number of singles as part of my addiction to the UK London American label. All my Spector vinyl has long gone aside from one Rare Masters album and the Darlene Love album I think. However, I doubt anything I had was particularly rare.

The Warner-Spector label was quite attractive and far better than the vinyl extrusion found on PSI singles.

I've got all of the PHILLES recordings on CD, mystery, but there's nothing like the looks of a NM or SS copy of a rare PHILLES LP. The PR label logo, whether it be blue/black, yellow red, or a white/black PR-logo promo copy, can't be beat -- especially when you know what power is contained within those gorgeous grooves!

In the very early '70s, I, too, bought the Phil Spector "Out Of His Head" book. The first of it's kind, what an exciting thrill it was to read and learn about the behind-the-scenes happenings of Phil Spector, Philles Records, and my beloved Philles artists.

In the book "Collecting Phil Spector", there is a black-and-white photo of the Side 1 label-copy of the Various Artists "Phil Spector Spectacular" LP. It's on Philles and, I'm assuming, the yellow/red version. As stated in the book, it was intended to follow the "Phil Spector Christmas Album" as the second release of Philles material on the Apple label. This exceedingly rare album was never issued making this, and Philles 4011 [[the unissued Ike & Tina Turner "River Deep" LP) the rarest of all Spector records. I didn't include this in with the Phil Spector - Part B - Philles LP Discography because, not only is it unreleased, I don't have a tracklist for Side 2. The Philles label-copy photo shows only the 9 tracks for Side 1.

I'm wondering, mystery, does your K-tel copy of the "Phil Spector Spectacular" LP use the K-Tel label logo, or did they recreate the Philles label [[like the Collectables label and the more recent Sundazed label did)?

Also, mystery, I, too, like the Warner-Spector label logo. And I love the Phil Spector International dark blue and silver LP label logo which is simple yet quite stunning. But, you're right -- that silver Phil Spector Intl. 45 logo is the pits! The outer 2/3 of the label are coated in silver ink, while the inner 1/3 of the label is bald, naked black vinyl. It looks like the pressing plant ran out of silver ink in the middle of the pressing! Makes ya wonder what the designer was high on when they thought up THAT one!

Neither you nor I have the "Phil Spector Spectacular" Philles LP because it was never released. The copy shown is a Promo copy. I'm not even sure how many of those were pressed. I've never seen one available on eBay. And, if one were to become available, I could never afford it.

The reason the Righteous Brothers track[[s) are courtesy of MGM is because when Bill & Bobby defected from Philles and signed with MGM/Verve before their Philles contract had been satisfied, Phil sued 'em. MGM/Verve ended up buying out their Philles contract. There was a part of the deal whereby MGM/Verve would own the Righteous Brothers Philles recordings [[or hold the rights to distribute their Philles recordings here in the U.S., or something along those lines. I never fully understood that deal, nor could I believe that Phil would relinguish control of any of his hard-earned Philles product, but he did which is why the Philles Album CD box set didn't contain the 3 Righteous Brothers albums. If it did, Phil would have had to lease them from MGM/Verve which is now Polydor [[which may now be Sony). I no longer know that stuff, as I can't keep up with who bought-out whom any more.) That Philles Album CD box set was a farce. Not only did it leave out the RB albums, it didn't even include the Philles Christmas album nor the Lenny Bruce album. It would have been nice had Sony added the unreleased Ike & Tina "River Deep" album as a bonus CD. They did at least include a bonus disc of Philles B-sides, but even that wasn't complete. The whole thing was a golden opportunity gone awry. Someday when I become President AND own Philles Records, we'll do it right, by golly! Ha!
