This is just great - probably my favourite one so far - there some wonderful tracks here. I think I like the whole lot. I kinda thought "You're My World" would be too big for Kiki Dee but I do like this version. Anything by Terry Johnson is fine for me. Ivy Jo - wonderful and what a great take on "Dancing In The Street". The Bobby Taylor tracks too are amazing. Hearts Of Stone - very pleasingly soulful. Not one dud track heard - I'veonly played it all a couple of times but man this is fantastic [[for £13.99 too). Yes I'd prefer CD but the track notes on Udiscover Music help to make up a little. One happy chappie here.

I doubt that there’s going to be part 2. Otherwise it would have been issued as part 1. I guess there wasn’t much left of Motown’s female roster. The Supremes, Marvelletes, and Vandellas all had their output liquidated on past releases, as did Syreeta. I’m assuming all of Blinky’s ‘69 recordings are on her forthcoming anthology.

I don't believe Tammi Terrell did any more recording after the session for "You're All I Need To Get By" in May 1968. On that track too it's obvious there was singing by Val.

With regard to "You're All I Need To Get By", the write up in TCMS 8 is quite telling - "Tammi Terrell paid a brief visit to Detroit during 1968, to work on "You're All I Need To Get By". Her initial lines are a touch uncertain after Marvin's strong opening...."."The track was recorded April 15, 1968, horns and strings recorded April 27; demo lead vocals recorded May 21; lead vocals recorded May 22; Gaye recut May 23; background vocals recorded May 27; Terrell re-cut May 28; LEADS and backgrounds RE-RECORDED May 29, 1968". Was that re-recording by Tammi or as I suspect Val then blended?

It's sad and not a great feeling to think about any of this and I'm a huge fan of Tammi - such a beautiful talent.

That version of "I've Gotta Be Me" was recorded in 1971 during the GOT TO BE THERE sessions. It's not a 1969 outtake. I agree with you regarding the fact that there were definitely more unreleased J5 tracks from 1969. Bobby Taylor has said that they recorded almost 40 tracks before the first album was out. A lot of those have come out over the years on various sets and compilations but not all of them. We know "TO SIR WITH LOVE" was recorded during those first sessions but that hasn't been released yet so I'm hoping a full set will be appearing by years end.

He is Mickey Denton [[as stated by "Lucky, Lucky, Me". Mickey came to Motown with Harry Balk, Duke Browner, The Volumes, and The Lollipops, when Balk came to Motown to run Motown's Rare Earth label. They were artists and producer [[Browner) for Balk's Impact and Inferno Records, and were still affiliated with Motown subsidiary Inferno Records, which was half-owned by Balk.

Mickey was a long-Time Detroit singer, who also recorded for Amy, and Palmer Records, and with Balk's group at Big Top, and Balk's own Twirl, and American Arts[[part of World Artists [[where Denton was assigned) labels, as well as one or two other Detroit labels, earlier. You should listen to his "The Other Side of Betty" on Big Top Records, it was a Balk/Duke Browner production recorded in Detroit. It sounds like it could be a Smokey Robinson 1961 production. His version of "Nature Boy" isn't bad. Balk's Soul writers, Barbey "Duke" Browner, and Maron McKenzie wrote several songs for Mickey. So he was more of a Pop/Soul hybrid than Del Shannon was for Balk. They tried to market Shannon as pure Pop.

Listen to "Didn't We", and "Someone For My Own". He really could sing. He reminded me of Tommy Good. Listen to "The Other Side Of Betty", too. Too bad Balk didn't give him better material all those years, to have a national hit. He did do well in the local clubs in The Detroit Metro Area. Not having to take a "day job" during the '60s, with all that great Soul music, and then The British Invasion, was a quite a respectable feat. I envy him that, as I chose the "safer conservative road" getting a "day job" for my first 18 years after graduation from university, instead of trying to make it as a full-time cartoonist. The tracks are nice enough, but in all honesty I don't think any of them are quite good enough to have been made the A-side of a single.
