I am in Los Angeles right now. I have seen prices for highest octane as high as about $4.57 and as low as about $3.70. Lowest octane ranges from $3.40 to $4.19. But, the difference between $4.00 and $3.00 gasoline [[or even $ 1.00 gas) doesn't affect me much. My little Nissan gets about 35 mpg in the city, and I drive only about 2,000 miles a year. It's a 1997, and I have barely 28,000 miles on it.

When I'm in The Netherlands Germany and Denmark I don't drive a car [[although train ticket costs have risen quite a bit in the past 20 years).

I remember when gas in USA was 6¢ a gallon! And you could get retail 45s for 39¢! The good old days!

Yikes! Wonder how much a used bicycle runs these days?

Depends. We've found out here [[Central Washington) gas prices vary widely, from $3.10 to $3.49 within about 20 miles.

I don't know, but I have 4 of them [[one in The Netherlands, one in Germany, one in Denmark and one in Los Angeles [[which I am afraid to ride on the streets, and have no time to take to the coastal bikeway). In Europe the bicycle is my main transportation. I used to ride on the bicycle highways from Den Haag all the way to Amsterdam [[just to visit friends or go shopping). I used to ride from Bremen to Oldenburg just to visit friends, and from Kopenhagen to the west side of Sjaeland [[its island), and even to Odense [[on another island). It's a good way to get exercise. I wish I could ride it to go shopping in L.A., but I'm sure I'd be killed. The drivers drive 60 mph around corners and don't expect to see bicycle riders.

The last time I bought petrol in The Netherlands, we were paying about 4.5 times as much for it than you were in USA. And yet you complain about $4.00 US for a US gallon. I imagine that current prices in Europe are still between 4 and 6 times that in USA.

The main difference being that you can drive across Holland in 2 hours. In the Unites states, it would take about 4 days.

It doesn't help that in most US localities, local development policies encouraged the growth of suburban sprawl, making it necessary for people to have cars to get around. Eventually oil will become scarce and a lot of people will be screwed over as prices go up.
