I wouldn't label this as Funk, per se.

Truthfully, there are so many great Funk songs, that I wouldn't be able to settle on a list naming the top 5 or 10.

But this cut is certainly 1st class all the way!

I'd have to agree with Tim, it's jazz funk. I've loved it for years but to me it's not the
same as funk uncut. A lot of tunes have been touted as the funkiest songs ever going
all the way back the beginnings of the recognition of funk as a distinct sound. Never have any majority of listeners, musicians or critics agreed. That said, for me for any tune
to be even in the running for the "funkiest ever" it would have to be hard, raw and have
a rhythm so strong it would be impossible to ignore even for people who don't like the
music. I once knew someone who hated the Ohio Players Ecstasy because she said the
way the music moved got on her nerves. That's why I loved it! :)...James Brown and
Parliament Funkadelic have definitely produced the largest bodies of funky grooves but
not everyone knows or likes all of their catalogue. I remember Ike Turner thought Aretha
Franklin's Rock Steady was the funkiest thing he'd heard and for Gladys Knight, the king of Funk wasn't JB but Wilson Pickett. One listen to tracks like Engine No. 9 and whether or not you agree, you get her point. I don't know what the funkiest song ever is but I've
spent many a year sifting through examples and enjoying the ear journey...

My choice would be this selection here.

:cool:Probably not the funkiest ever but I like Honky Tonk I & II by James Brown and the JBs. James wrote the book on Funk.
I've also been playing the Meters [[CISSY STRUT) a lot lately. New Orleans funk is not to be slept on.

HONKY TONK WAS PRODUCED DURING THE GODFATHER'S HEAVY FUNK PERIOD. It'S still JB though.

More like dentist office music.
The Jazz Funk that I'm more accustomed to is Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Lonnie Liston Smith, Headhunters, Weather Report, Crusaders, Patrice Rushen...

Yeah fellows, Ju Ju sound more like an instrumental R&B track to my ears. Not that it isn't done well, it is, but when I think of something FUNKY I think of something like these:

I'd have to go with any one of the James Brown songs. My personal fave for funkiest would be "gonna have a funky good time"

I was playing another funk favorite today. The Funky Judge by Bull & the Matadors.
If you ever have to go before one, you know how funky some judges can be.

An example of my idea of funk is "Maybe Your Baby" by Stevie Wonder.

Skool Dem I agree James Brown was the man. Also put some George Clinton/Funkadelic.

Although not a Motown thread "Function At The Junction" can make me shake a tail feather like my late great Aunt Florence who loved all this stuff bless her soul.

Never heard of it. LoL. Thats the real title?

juicefree20
03-01-2011, 04:06 PM
Indeed, the title is "Doin' It To Death" & though credited to Fred Wesley & The J.B.'s, it's a J.B. cut all the way!

And if memory serves me correctly, it's one of the rare songs where the title of the song isn't mentioned anywhere in the lyric.

I could be wrong.

Either way, the folks in the record stores knew what record folks were looking for!

The problem originates from the fact that latter JB live albums usually lists this song as "Funky Good Time" or "Gonna Have A Funky Good Time".

Timmy

Not to be overlooked is the fact that they sing it about 937 times in the choruses of the song. No verses, just repeating it over & over & over & over &...

But it's STILL one hell of a groove & all of these years later, STILL fills the floors at parties & clubs in N.Y.C.!

Yeah, but the title of the song is on the record. Whoever was in charge of those 1980's live comps just got lazy and probably didn't feel like doing any kind of research.

Warning: Do not expose this funky song to those of a sensitive disposition, and definitely NOT to your mother. Suffice to say, Sugar Billy is a greedy, greedy man. And he's not shy in giving advice.

If you want to give someone a definitive example of funk, play them this tune. It’s the litmus test. If they get it, they get funk. If it’s just a noise, they definitely do not have the faintest notion of funk. They live in a funkless world!

Quite what possessed Sugar Billy to record this tune in this way beats me, but I rate it as genius. The channel separation is absolute and he shouts and exhorts his message independently from both channels to awesome effect. Headphones reveal all, or if you have well spaced speakers, play at full volume, you’ll get the full effect. And listen to his guitar playing and the manic drummer.

Oh, and I urge any of you who don’t have this track to enrich your lives and buy the MP3 album including this track from Amazon.com at a measly $7.99. If you enough of you do, it will improve on its current ranking at number 455,936 in paid MP3 downloads….I’ll be watching with interest! You even get his original and far superior version of Super Duper Love later covered by Joss Stone.

MIKEW-UK
03-04-2011, 05:22 AM
imnokid, yep, well spotted. It may be that he doesn't appear here because he has his very own thread already running started by tamla617. The video on his thread states "Thank You [[Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" is the greatest funk song ever. And expedia states "Thank You [[Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin is a 1969 hit single recorded by Sly and the Family Stone, recognized as one of the greatest and most influential funk songs of all time". So you're right to question as to why he's not in this thread as well.

Here I go :D
In order to say what is the best of anything ,you would have to have experienced "ALL" in that specific subject. I learn of many
FUNKY tracks from just interacting with you all on this forum. Sh... ,we don't even know for a fact what the hell FUNK is. Except that it's a feeling ,that ranges from chilled out on one extreme to rip roaring bust a nut ,skeet skeet ,to the other. You could hurt yourself trying to even go through all the FUNK that's out there ,to even pick what you would call the best.
I gotta go with 404, does not compute. :D:D

It depends on the ear angle of the funky listener. But for me, i can't make a selection of the FUNKEST ever!!!! There are too many of them FUNKEST tunes around. And too many Bands that played some of the FUNKEST tunes ever. The world came up with so many different kind of funky styles, that it's hard to keep track. One tip, if it got that smell, it sure is FUNKY.
