"And If You See Him" had to grow on me. I remember when I finally stumbled across a copy of Surrender, that was probably the only song on the album I didn't like. Only in the last couple years have I really started appreciating Diana's vocal performance. It's really a great song. I even think with a tweak here or there, this could've been a hit single.

"Brown Baby/Save the Children" is probably my favorite Diana album track period, but definitely my favorite track on the TMITM album. She kills me with that one every time.

"Didn't We", definitely one of my favorite Diana live cuts. I especially like the way she ends it. I wonder if there's a studio version lurking in the vaults. That would be interesting to hear and compare.

"Selfish One" is probably the best song on that crap album. I think it was a fantastic throwback. Honestly if you didn't know it was recorded in the 80s one might think it was from the Supremes days. And I love Diana's vocal on it. I wish I had thought to add it to my list.

"I'm a Winner" has grown on me. I didn't dislike it but I was so impressed with nearly every other cut on the Surrender album that I didn't pay much attention to "Winner". But in recent years I've really gotten into how much Diana gets into the song. I think she may have had a hit with it had it been released. She sounds great.

I used to love "I Wouldn't Change". Loved it. Now I rarely make it a point to play it specifically. It's still good but it don't move me like it once did. Good stuff though Tom.

Selfish One is now my favorite from RHRB, over previous favorites It's hard For Me To Say and Summertime. I think it may be Ross' best remake. I even prefer it to Jackie Ross' original.

It did come across a tad old fashioned in 87. I do agree that had this album been recorded in 83 it might have faired somewhat better then ross did.
It would have been great to hear Diana singing Songs like "Shine", "Summertime" or "Selfish One" at her concert in Central Park.
The album is a little more accessible and breezy then ross making the songs perfect for an open air concert.

Yeah, of the RCA albums only Eaten Alive might be worse. It was false advertisement. There was nothing red hot nor was there much rhythm and blues to be found. Had Cyndi Lauper or Madonna done the same album I might have a different opinion. But Diana Ross knows rhythm and blues and for an R&B lover such as myself, this album left a lot- a helluva lot- to be desired. Another misstep in her RCA career. The last misstep there apparently.

RanRan79

Yes, Tom Dowd. Just looked over his producer credits for the few years prior to RHRAB and he just becomes one more "what the hell" question in regards to Diana's focus. What was she really trying to achieve? Maybe at this point she didn't care about remaining a hit maker. And of course by 1987 she had firmly cemented her place in music history. She was also newly married and expanding her family. So maybe this was just a creative move. Something she wanted to do with someone she always wanted to work with. Do I buy any of that? Not really. So if she wanted to continue to be Diana Ross Hit Maker, why the hell would she bring on Tom Dowd to produce all but one track? What had he done in the last couple of years that made her go "Oh yes, I must have Tom! He'll give me a hit and a hit album to go along with it!" Why not give Luther a go at the whole thing? Or someone else who was a bit more involved with hit making in 1987? I understand why even a television special couldn't make a hit out of this album or it's songs.

"Shockwaves" is cool only because I like the melody, but I would've much preferred hearing it from Madonna or somebody like that than Diana. I love "Selfish One" and I love "There Goes My Baby". The latter I love no matter who sings it. I don't believe I've ever heard a version of "There Goes My Baby" that I didn't like. Plus the song itself is important to the history of Diana's career, so that adds a special touch. But still there isn't anything extraordinary about it. Surprisingly, two of the cuts left off of the original album, "Sweet Soul Music" and "Tell Mama" are pretty good covers. Diana doing Etta just don't seem like it would be a good fit, but Diana does very well. What messes the song up is the background singers. It's like they come in too late and it messes up the groove.

I'd rather listen to Mary's demos from Atlantic recorded around the same time, bootleg audio complete with air and hissing.:D They were more R&B than most of the nonsense on RHRAB in my opinion.

The rhythm and blue tracks like Tell Mama and Sweet Soul Music, etc. weren’t included on the album. They were recorded for this project though. They were however featured in the TV special. Don’t know if it was the label who ultimately decided to not include them on the album. When the expanded album was released a couple of years ago, they were included.

Totally agree David. I thought the final 3 rca albums were stronger than the first 3. For me the weakest of them all was the insipid Why do Fools. It was a cheap, badly produced set of average songs. Only Mirror Mirror cut the mustard for me. Red Hot contained some great songs, but it was a hotch potch of styles. They should have stuck to the initial plan of a covers album and a more contemporary album rather than mix the two.

No One Gets The Prize was released as a single in the UK but was one of her lesser performing songs only charting at #59.

The B-side was Never Say I Don't Love You and given the UK's love of Diana's ballads in the 70s it was probably a big mistake not to have it as the A-side.

But then Bluerock has told us there was someone at EMI deliberately trying to put Diana down in the late 70s.

Yes, yes, yes ;) even if I'm mad at her for not singing the song in it's entirety and original lyrics.

Lol Absolutely. She was just that good.

Yeah Ran, it was definitely single material, after "The Boss" and "It's My House". :)

I would've kept "The Boss" as the lead single, although the more I think about it the more I think, as fantastic as the song is, it may not have been as strong of a lead single as I once thought. But I would've definitely put out "Prize" before "House". "It's My House" is a cool cut though. I was shocked when I found out it wasn't a massive hit. Everybody I know still break out into the chorus from time to time. Lol I always heard it on the radio growing up.

I think "Never Say" would've fared better as the A side in the UK also. But in the US it just doesn't make sense that "Prize" wasn't the second single, especially since Motown sent it out to discos where it was massively popular. Motown put out "The Boss" and then "It's My House", with months of space in between. Meanwhile Donna Summer was hitting everything that Diana should've. Stupid Motown.
