Ed sullivan was very popular in the black community for his presenting blacks on his show long before there was-soul train.

This story is almost identical to my story. We would all watch the Ed Sullivan Show, followed by Bonanza. My mother would bring home the latest 45 singles on Friday nights, but it was McDonald's instead of pizza for us! LOL!
