House Music has been slammed by some for being somewhat simplistic, but there's no fronting on that groove.

Marv & Skooldem:

Thank you.

I know that this music isn't considered to be 'real' music by many, but it damn sure grooves.

In it's own way, some House Music gave a nod to Soul Music & many songs continued in the tradition of trying to give a message in the music. Some of it was just for grooving & while much of it gave little consideration to orchestration, song structure, it wasn't necessarily designed to do so.

Just as much of Disco Music wasn't meant for that purpose.

It was music made by folks who couldn't afford expensive B-3's & recording equipment, who wanted to express themselves. Most of it wasn't created with harmony or any of that in mind, it was just meant to be music that you could go out, throw away your cares & just groove to.

I'm glad that I grew up in a time when music was going through various permutations & glad that I was young enough where I could appreciate all of them for what they were. I'm glad that I was young enough that I could appreciate the R&B that was being made when I was 5, appreciate the change to Soul Music, then Funk, to Disco, to Rap, to House Music, to some of today's R&B.

None of us exists in a vacuum & I never understood how there could be people who can't find even a few songs or recent vintage that's moved them. Granted, I don't like everything that's been made & I'll always believe that my youth in the 60s & 70s produced the greatest music ever. With that said, there's been a whole lot of damn good music that's come along from the 80s forward.

Perhaps it's because as a James Brown fanatic, while prizing melody & harmony, I really appreciate the rhythm & groove. While many of today's music may be lacking in melody, harmony & even basic song structure, it sure makes up for those deficiencies in groove. How anyone can hear songs like the remixes of 'Downtown' by SWV, 'Where You Are' by Rashaan Patterson, or even 'I Don't Need It' by Jamie Foxx & not bob their head or get their feet moving a little, is something that I don't understand because those songs GROOVE.

Likewise with House Music.

I'm going to go through my records & find some more of these cuts. But what I hope to do is to post less of the more obvious hits & post some that may have slipped through the cracks for most people.

It's a shame some people get older and get their snob on.

Ms M:

Quiet as it's kept, a whole lot of people liked Disco too & I'm not even finished with that thread yet!

When I think of some of the response that I've read over the years, one scene comes to my mind...

A few years ago, I was at a Disco show. The audience looked like it could've been extras for a casting call for 'Saturday Night Fever' or 'Goodfellas' & they danced to all of the Disco artists. But when The Sugarhill Gang got onstage & did 'Rappers Delight', those folks went beserk. Those women ran onstage & 60 year-old men were dancing like it was 1975 again.

Now I know damn good & well that they weren't listening to Rap music in 1979 & likely hated it.

OR DID THEY REALLY!?!?

Re. Ronnie, no problem at all! The music is damn good & I hope that folks who are into Smooth Jazz will give it a serious listen.

Now how did I forget to mention The Shadow or The Limelight?

And of all places, how did I leave off The Paradise Garage?

It wasn't my kind of spot, but it was sure popular as hell!

I'll be back with some more cuts & though I'd like to do it, I'm going to leave Ten City to you & Skooldem.

Truth be told Juice, I have never been a Rapper's Delight Fan. The closest thing to rap I was into back then was "Word Up." Now THAT was the jam. Oh and the Last Poets...hahahahaha

Ironically he's putting the jazz CD on hold for now and going with the other. At least that's where he is this week.

Hello all ..

Well to my mind "House Music" [[ and its close relatives "Garage" and Techno" ) was a late '80s and early '90s update of, or rebranding of, what in the early '80s had been called "Dance Music" and what in the mid and late '70s had been called "Disco Music".

Rippling Rhythms, Playful strings and synths and sometimes some very soulful vocals.. always a good combination ..

And when it was done well it was G.G.GREAT!!!!

Loved TEN CITY, MR FINGERS, MARSHALL JEFFERSON etc. etc.

Here are some of my favourites from that era that don't seem to have been mentioned so far.

1 : SHALOR - "I'm In Love"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YFPkVHGd3M

2 :- JOE SMOOTH - "Cant Fake The Feeling" .. Off his "Promised Land" L.P. and featuring the vocals of RENEE MOHANNON.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xscryQGXslQ

3 :- GUY COSTLEY : "Somebody Here" ..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOkjiilfpQA

4 : FRANKIE KNUCKLES :- "The Whistle Song"

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1htoy_frankie-knuckles-the-whistle-song_music

5 : ADEVA :- "Respect" .. inventive update of the old OTIS REDDING/ARETHA FRANKLIN classic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGJM9L85cwQ

6 : DHAR BRAXTON :- "Jump Back [[ Set Me Free )"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLTAmHUWpX4

7 : GARY VONQUEST :- "Victim Of Love"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCyzEaN15Lc

Enjoy ..

Hey Juice ..

I've been working my way through some of those recommendations of yours in the first post on the thread and that "Tonite" track by THOSE GUYS seems to owe a lot to this little classic from the House era ..

STEPHANIE MILLS :- "Looking For Mr Right" ..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JmEntMx17o&feature=related

Which in turn influenced this tune a few years later ..

D-INFLUENCE - "Good Lover" ..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpjwxdVCc-g

The D-INFLUENCE track may veer a bit away from "House" into a more Jazzy vibe .. so to get back in the groove .. here is one that was big in London ..

RAZE - "Jack The Groove"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wstksdQFMkI

And the one that really kicked off the whole "House" thing in Britain ..

HOUSE MASTER BOYZ AND THE RUDE BOYS OF HOUSE : "House Nation".

Cozmic ..

I would imaging this one from 1978 was very influential ..

SYLVESTER :- "You Make Me Feel Mighty Real" ..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG2ixYJ79iE

Compare it with this 1997 solo effort from the one time singer in TEN CITY ..

BYRON STINGILY :- "Get Up Everybody"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuE_jqRj08g

It was on his C.D. "The Purist" .. they could almost be from the same session ..

And as if to prove the point Byron's C.D. also had his take on "You Make Me Feel Mighty Real" ..

Daddy, Cosmic, Glencro & Roger:

Thank you for joining in with your contributions. I think that it's interesting to see how House Music was experienced on both sides of the pond. I like these choices & as I said, we could be here for a little while with this. I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with next. I'm going to try to come up with songs that I think most people will be unfamiliar with.

Roger:

Indeed the influences come from so many sources & there are tracks which certainly influenced House & you can hear the connection.

Roger & Marv:

It's interesting that you both spoke about the ingredients of House Music, as it fits perfectly with an observation that came to me last night.

Now check this out...

I won't give you the name of the song because I don't want you to look at the name & form any conclusions. But speed up this tempo, eliminate the guitars & horns, add some piano & tell me what have you got...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiEr7eNp8B4

Sounds like House Music to me. A slower groove, but if you listen closely, the connection can be heard.

Thanks for the shout out Juice. Yeah I think we will be on this subject for a while. Let me just add a little fire to this subject and the question of just what is House Music?
Well from my point of view House Music was concieved during the so called Disco era ,at the point where clubs started to pop up everywhere and just at the point where the serious Dancers and D.J.'s became aware of the fadism and commercialism that began to get associated with the party scene here in New York. The true Dancers and D.J.'s did not party to material that had a "classification" such as "Disco". The Loft and Paradise Garage and clubs of that stature originally offered two key elements of the "Party Scene" prior to the Disco connotation , which were,
1) the various genre of music played ,which was multi genred but [[and very importantly) danceable,
2) and played over an audiophile quality system.
The template of Mancuso's Loft and eventually The Garage ,was the basis of the "Disco" fad IMO , and the gimmicks of the waiting on lines to get into clubs ,the being seen in this club or that club ,the dress and even the subsequent making of specific "Disco" music ,were not what the original intent of what true Dance Party patrons and D.J.'s started out with.
"House" was created from the need to separate the worlds of the "Studio 54" type club from the original party atmosphere. "54" was a "DISCO" , the Garage was a Dance Club.
There was the need for purist Dance patrons to have that raw and true musical material that didn't have that "Disco" infused 120-130 bpm syrupy string stuff that was pushed by this new industry where the music was not only played in the "Discos",but had also found its way played on commercial radio. D.J.'s such as Larry Levan and Walter Gibbons had begun to do Remixes for the commercial market but were at heart still Dance Music D.J.'s and had started to create tracks that were unique to their personal playlist ,that catered to that pure Dance audience ,that came to Dance gawdamit, not be seen or be hip. Tracks meant to kick you in the ass tri amped at 5000 watts. Things that you would hear only them play. "House music". Raw Dance tracks like 'The N.Y.C. Peech Boys' ,"Don't make Me Wait" ,"Loose Joints" "Is It All Over My Face" and The Strikers "Body Music" which you could only hear him play for months before they were released ,and were too raw for "Disco" radio play. A place where the big commercial artists could not go. "House music" is the only spinoff of R&B/ Funk that has not been exploited by any of the major record companies ,but restricted to small local companies and independents.
" House" was back to basic ,dance your ass off music ,straight up ,no gimmicks ,originated here in N.Y. and developed further in Chicago by Jefferson and Hurley. It also remains to this day a strong underground genre.

Hello again all ..

Its been interesting reading the points made about the origins of "House Music" both here on the forum and on the links posted to You-Tube, especially the debate about whether it originated in Chicago or NYC.

Well, from a British perspective, around 1987 it was generally understood here that if it came from Chicago it was "House" and if it came from New York/New Jersey it was "Garage", and if it came from Detroit it was "Techno". Now, maybe that was just us Brits trying to over-analyse things, as essentially it was the same style of music and maybe those distinctions made no sense from a U.S. perspective.

However, if I think about it, I first heard the term "Garage" used to describe NYC/NJ dance music around 1982/3 .. someone had come up with the term to describe a variety of Soulful Dance music that was being made based around synthesised drums and strings. And we were told that the name "Garage" had been taken from an NYC nightclub called "The Paradise Garage", where apparently such music was popular. Tunes that spring to mind that I associated with the sound were such tracks as "Touch Me" by FONDA RAE, "Reach Up" by TONY LEE, "Nothing Going On But the Rent" by GWEN GUTHRIE and "You Ain't Really Down" by STATUS FOUR, all of which were reasonably successful in Britain.

These "Garage" tunes had a different approach to the Mellow-Funk sounds of [[say) FATBACK or KOOL & THE GANG which used "real" instruments [[ as did mainstream acts like MICHAEL JACKSON or GEORGE BENSON ) and the "Garage" tunes also differed from the Electro/Hip-Hop tunes that were popular at the time .. "Hip Hop Be Bop" by MAN PARRISH, "Al Naafish" by HASHIM etc. which were electronic riffs built around somewhat disjointed, juddering basslines.

The "Garage" tunes were built around a rippling repetative groove, and unlike "Rap" were sung .. not "rapped".

In 1983/4 Britain, all of these R&B based musical styles .. Electro/Hip-Hop/Garage/Funk/Soul .. tended to be lumped together as "Dance Music".

The term "House" came into prominance in Britain around 1986, named I think after a Chicago nightclub called "The Warehouse" or something similar .. input from Chicage SDF members would be useful here .. and what the Chicage artists seemed to be producing was a faster form of what had been known as "Garage", with relentless rhythms that were a throwback to the "Disco" tunes of 1977/8/9.

I know I posted earlier that the big breakthrough in Britain was "House Nation", but the first "House" tune that was actually a huge hit was a few months before that .. "Jack Your Body" by STEVE "SILK" HURLEY which gained the U.K. "Pop" number one spot early in 1987. Mind you, as it didn't contain the word "House" in the title it was easy to consider it to be just another "Dance" tune.

By 1988/89 the term "House" was in common usage in Britain to describe the modern up-tempo R&B based dance music, and sub-genres started to be perceived .. "Acid House" for the more electronic instrumental music, and "Soulful House" for the vocal varieties. No prizes for guessing which I preferred. The term "Garage" seemed to have faded away, though it made a return in the '90s, and the records coming out of NYC/NJ had speeded in tempo to match the sounds coming out of Chicago anyway.

Anyway enough of all this pontification .. here are a few more goodies ..

1 : KRISS COLEMAN .. "Shine" .. a very mellow LARRY HEARD production ..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyDuB4VXJ-I

2 : MICHAEL WATFORD .. "Holding On" .. Soulful House!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34DlKRaKA0A

3 : BLAZE .. "So Special" .. More Soulful House!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzmP_fJ_5vM

4 : ALY-US .. "Follow Me" .. This seemed to be around for AGES!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3cfGzuICzA

5 : THE ROCK POSSE WITH FONDA RAE .. "Do You Want My Love" .. great song!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvMUbIwl1gU

And talking of those musical influences .. this one isn't too far removed from early '80s "Electro" ..

6 : NITRO DELUXE .. "This Brutal House" ..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_BbCoVZawY

And this one isn't too far removed from late '70s "Disco" ..

7 : RICHARD ROGERS .. "Can't Stop Loving You".. Instrumental Version.

Jucie, you are the man ! :) I'm glad you started a thread about House Music. Being a "old head" from the House Music era, the music is still going on in Chicago. We still bang the classics and we even have a huge annual pincic in the summertime.

I remember the House mixes being played live on the air on WBMX 102.7 FM. [[ I wish I still had some of the legendary mixes from the Hot Mix 5 DJs on cassette) :[[

Every now and then, I may throw in a classic house song or two on my monthly dusties show on 'HPK. Plus our station have a weekly show that plays House music on Sunday nights. [[go to our website and check our program guide http://whpk.org)

I'll add a few of my favorites sometime tomorrow, when I have some time.

Cozmic:

And a well-deserved shout-out, my friend! Thank you for adding your perspective, experiences & choices to this thread! Much of what you've posted are songs that I am unfamiliar with & so, the knowledge grows. Thank you again!

Daddy:

As a fellow New Yorker, I knew that you'd remember a lot of my choices & I also knew that you'd definitely know & had experienced the best of the House Music era.

I agree with what you're saying about a lot of the early 80's Dance Music. I still remember when I got my copy of 'Don't Make Me Wait' & that off-the-hook a capella! That was as far from the Disco experience as could be & the records of that incoming era definitely gave Dance Music a totally different feel from the Disco Era.

Once again, the times were a'changin' & once again, we were witness to those changing times!

Roger:

Thank you for adding your selections & damned if Kris Coleman & 'Shine' wasn't next on my list :)

GeeTee:

Thank you my brother, it's a pleasure to revisit the music. Though we all love Soul Music, I know that most of us were also open to the various musical evolutions as time marched on. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your choice material from Chi-Town :)

I read the writings of people from different regions whom seem more interested in debating about whom did what, rather than engaging in discussions which simply relate the similarities of our various experiences.

Indeed, one can't discuss house Music without giving the proper respect to Chicago & folks like Silk, Marshall J, The Spen, Larry Heard aka. Mr. Fingers, Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk, Ron Hardy, Lil Louis, Chip-E, Jesse Saunders & Trax Records & DJ International. Out in Detroit, there was Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson [[who formed Inner City & in only recently I learned that his sister is a friend of mine here in Brooklyn) & the beginnings of Techno & quite interestingly, it was one of our beloved forumers, the late Ron Murphy, who had a BIG hand in the Detroit Techno scene. These were names that were well-known in the N.Y. Club scene at that time.

Likewise, one must also give a fair nod to the N.Y.C. House scene that also helped to feed the baby & helped it to grow

This is why I find it interesting to read how you experienced the movement in Britain. Many times, some of us fall into the trap of thinking that only our experiences were valid & 'original'. But its a big world out there & it's interesting to read of your experiences during that era.

We share...we learn...we grow!

Hi Juice ..

Its interesting to note that the two of those selections of yours which are British acts .. INNOCENCE .. and .. THE CHIMES .. are acts that very few U.K. Soul/R&B fans would associate them with "House Music".

Which makes me wonder if you would regard SOUL II SOUL as having anything to do with "House Music"?

I'll try to explain ..

Back in the mid/late '80s/early '90s "House" and "Dance Music" was very much part of the U.K. "Pop" music mainstream .. in much the same way that in the U.S. "Motown" was part of the mainstream in the late '60s and "Disco" was in 1977/8.

As I mentioned in a previous post "Jack Your Body" made #1 on the U.K. charts early in 1987 .. the previous year one of the ten biggest selling 45s in the U.K. was "Trapped" by COLONEL ABRAMS.

Here is the good Colonel appearing on Top Of The Pops in 1985.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=915a1F-PTck

If I look at U.S. chart positions "Trapped" made #20 R&B and did nothing on the "Pop" charts. In Britain it spent 23 weeks on the "pop" chart and peaked at #3.

There are A LOT of other examples of this from the 1980s, where relatively obscure [[ in the U.S. ) R&B records sold much better in Britain than in their homeland.

Basically, in Britain we had hardly any of the ridiculous "Anti Disco" backlash that the U.S. experienced in 1979/80 .. indeed I would say that in 1981/2 R&B based Dance Music was more popular in Britain than it had been back during 1977/8.

Consequently, when "House" put in an appearance it quite quickly became part of the mainstream, as a sound it certainly was never really "underground", though most of your selections would mean nothing to the typical U.K. music lover .. some were new to me too!!

And quickly there were U.K./European records being made that followed the lead set by NYC and Chicago.

The following 4 U.K./European efforts were ALL big "Pop" hits [[ Top 3 at least ) in Britain in the "House" era ..

"Pump Up The Jam" .. TECHNOTRONIC .. Belgian Group

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EcjWd-O4jI

"Respectable" .. MEL AND KIM .. #1 U.K. Hit produced by STOCK/AITKEN/WATERMAN from 1987.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPmy2fCuTjs

"Pump Up The Volume" .. M.A.R.R.S. .. Number 1 in Britain in 1987.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B87snXgV7Pg

"Ride On Time" .. BLACK BOX .. really a remix of "Love Sensation" by LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY by an Italian act.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiJ2B8PFjqU

However not all Soul/R&B fans were too pleased by the new development and there was somewhat of a backlash .. with a "Rare Groove" scene emerging that concentrated on exposing little known '70s recordings .. "Funk" and "Steppers" in particular .. a kind of "Antidote" to "House".

SOUL II SOUL grew out of the London "Rare Groove" scene, and both THE CHIMES and INNOCENCE are seen here as part of that same movement.

This is the first INNOCENCE hit .. "Natural Thing" .. it made the U.K. Top 10 .. lovely cool sound.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6epX28R4tc

And here is the write up on them on Wikipedia ..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Innocence_[[band)

And this is the big hit THE CHIMES had here .. their version of U.2.s "I Still Havn't Found What I'm Looking For".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-KAnnG_vPc

I think its difficult for U.S. residents to comprehend just how HUGE "House" became in Britain .. the British press labeled the summer of 1988 "The Second Summer Of Love" as a result of the Acid-House craze. The first "Summer of Love" being 1967.

That was after promoters started to organise huge unlicensed parties, either outdoors or in abandoned buildings, playing "House", and sparking off a huge controversy ..

Here is a rather sensationalised BBC news report from 1988 about the "Acid House" phenomenon

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rgjog28R9_0

And a rather more objective report from ITN's "World In Action".
