Could you be referring to The Staple Singers, whose real family name is "Staples". So, when they changed their name from "Staples Singers" to "Staple Singers", their title word "Staple" was misspelled?

"Travellers" is the British spelling.

"Travellers" is the British spelling.

Well, great googa mooga!...I guess I'm the only one here that didn't know that.
Funny that the members of a southern black gospel group would way back then...

I've got MANY, MANY records by The Pilgrim Travelers, and NONE of them used the British/Canadian/Australian/South African/new Zealander spelling.

I wonder where Splanky saw it spelled with the double-L.

Maybe. But I wouldn't count on it. But, I'll bet I have records by the group, and know them very well. But I can't think of any misspelled Gospel group names, offhand.

I would bet that he saw it on a British Commonwealth issue [[where the printer changed it from Travelers to "Travellers" because they thought it was misspelled from the "correct" British spelling). As the group is made up of Americans, their name should be spelled with one "L". But, like text and song titles, group names are sometimes "translated".

Ok,one hint,it doesn't look misspelled but if you know the origin of the name you'll know that it is.

robb, I don't remember where I first saw it spelled with two Ls but it
was obviously a mistake someone made and then was repeated over and
over again on the web. I myself have never owned any Pilgrim Travelers
releases, I just heard them and a slew of other gospel groups when I
lived in the southern part of the US. BTW as much as I miss the Carolinas
I'm relieved to not be there right now....
Anyway, Jai! Let me try again...Could you possibly be referring to
The Swanee Quintet? Swanee actually being an abbreviated spelling
and pronouncing of Suwannee like the river?....

I've got lots of records by The Swanee Quintet, as well. The song "The Old Folks At Home", that includes the phrase "Way down upon The Swanee River", has it spelled the same way. But the real spelling of the river is "Suwannee". So, is THAT the misspelling? , and Splanky got the answer correct?

There are The Powerlites on Peacock Gospel label. It should be spelt: "Powerlights". But, I'd bet THIS one ISN'T the group you mean. Also, The Gospel Cleffs on Gospel Records, spelt incorrectly, with 2 "F"s. But, I also doubt that this is the one to which you refer.

Ok gang, the group that seem to have you all stumped is the highway oc's..[the actual name is the highway quiz kids]but the founder misspelled it.

Ha! Ha! I thought Highway QC's was misspelt because "q" was really from the word "cue". And what is it with Americans using an apostrophe to make letters plural??? That's incorrect grammar usage in all other English-speaking nations.

I think it's Ironic that you misspelled QC's by putting an "o" the "q's" stead. Freudian slip?

I have to admit that I've never heard of that group's origin as Quiz Kids. Were the original members scholars? Did they have to leave too many towns for being TOO SMART? Won too many quiz contests or quiz show prizes?

Wasn't Johnny Taylor or Lou Rawls in that group for awhile? They were the "farm team" or "Junior version" of The Soul Stirrers, who were their "mentor group".

HAAAAAAAAAAAAA..FREUDIAN SLIP INDEED..[darned hooch, hehe]YES A YOUNG JOHNNY TAYLOR WAS IN THAT GROUP REPLACING SAM COOKE.
