From the self-styled "black Beatles" penned by their "Paul McCartney" [[Lionel Richie):

I wouldn't call them "The Black Beatles" because they didn't innovate, nor did they start any musical trends. inspire legions of young bands, or foster any sociological movements. They didn't have a controversial spokesman, and didn't have legions of screaming fans at sold-out concerts. They were consistent hit makers for a good seven years, though.

I got really sick of hearing "Three Times A Lady" because the ladies liked it. It wasn't even that great of a song. Good for playing on Valentine's Day, I guess.

They aren't the "Black Beatles" They did have huge sell out arena concerts though. I saw them twice. Once in the Fall of 1977 and then again in the Fall of 1978. Spectacular shows! This song is a great memory from late Summer of 1978 and went to Number One on the Billboard Charts. A great fete because it was in the middle of the Disco Era.

I don't understand the Beatles reference. Midnight is that your personal moniker for them, or is that something they were speaking about regarding themselves? In any case, I'll take the Commodores over the Beatles any day of the week, thank you. I love this song also.

As far as I know, Lionel said that numerous times that they were going to be greater or as good as the Beatles.

See, that's what you guys get for being Supremes stans.

It's like that time I told people why I named myself "midnightman" and it was due to a Marvin Gaye quote and half of you guys were like " "

LOL but you know what Mary Wilson put in her bathroom lmao

Yes, Lionel Richie use to say that every chance he got on television. The Commodores were extremely popular from late '75 to 1979. They were selling out everywhere. When their music switch from heavy Funk to mushy ballads and Country type songs [[Sail On for example), their popularity started to wane.

They were actually better musicians than the Beatles and definitely put on a much better stage show. Still, Richie was their principle writer.

I thought you called yourself "Midnightman" because of Marvin's "Midnight Love" album. Anyway, I am sure I know more about the Commodores than you do! LOL!!!

I'm not a stan, so that doesn't apply to me. Nor was I present for the convo regarding your name. And I have no idea what Mary's bathroom looks like. I know quite a bit of information regarding many different musical acts over the years. The Commodores just happened to be one I haven't researched in and out, so the Black Beatles reference went over my head.

I do, however, know what LaBrenda Ben's bathroom looks like, thank you very much.:p

A stan is when someone is a fan of them so much they are obsessed with them. :)

@Cosmic Truth, yeah they were a great funk act, no question!

I wish Lionel would do a funk album but I guess that years of singing ballads, he can't do it.

Ah thank you midnight. Do you know where the phrase has come from? I was thinking "fan" + "stupid" = "stan" or something :p

I’ve always interpreted it as “stalker + fan.”

Eureka! My partner reminded me of the Eminem track “Stan” about an obsessed fan with that name. We can’t recall the term in parlance before that song, so maybe we have Mr. Mathers to thank!

I agree. Sadly, a whole generation of kids have grown up not knowing how to play instruments.
