Hi everyone,

does anyone know if there are anymore different Versions on the 1975 LP
The Greatest 64 Motown Original Hits
then Someday We'll Be Together???

I actually had that extended intro of Someday on a Cream of The Crop LP...I can't remember if it was a normal issue, Mono, or Promo...I may even still have it packed away.

My local 7-11 carried this and played it constantly. I almost had it down to a science that I could walk in just as Don't Mess With Bill was playing, which at the time would probably have been my favorite track on the collection.

No Running Away wasn't on this set. Is there an alternate of You Keep Running Away?

This box set was heavily advertised on Philadelphia uhf stations when I was a kid. I loved this collection, but remember being disappointed that The Four Tops’ “Baby I Need Your Loving” wasn’t included [[and could have lived without Rare Earth’s “Born To Wander”). It was the first various artist and multi-album set that I owned.
Did anyone else own this box set in the ‘70s, and if so, did you have favorites that were left off [[keeping in mind that only 64 hits could be included).

That's the original stereo mix and it essentially sounds like a stereo interpretation of the single mix, i.e. all of the same instrumentation, edits etc. As far as I can tell, it went MIA after 1968.

As for the differences......

In the full arrangement of the song as recorded on the multi-track, there's a distinct and insistent horn and guitar riff behind all of the choruses, and there's no instrumental break.

In the original mono and stereo mixes this riff was removed from all bar one of the choruses, and in the one chorus where it was retained [[just before the final verse) they removed the vocals instead. This had the effect of turning the riff into an instrumental break.

The alternative mix, however, includes the full recording with the riff behind all of the choruses, plus all of the vocals are retained. Therefore, instead of the fabricated instrumental break, we get Levi singing another chorus and repeating the word "Each" from "Each time you go, the hurt becomes stronger." as though he started singing the final verse a beat too soon.

To my ears the full arrangement in the alternative mix is too busy and it seems that HDH felt the same. The stripped down mix has more room to breathe.

The alternative mix turned up on the 1971 US Greatest Hits Volume 2, by the way.
