I remember that album. I think we had it back in 60s. Nice instrumental tracks.

Neither the Sam Cooke or Earl Van Dyke releases show up on either Amazon or CD Japan. Are these releases a bit dodgy? Does anyone know anything about them?

On Ebay, new copies of both albums are currently available in mini-lp CD format from a seller located in Japan for very reasonable prices. I don't recognise the label "Clinck Records", so I doubt if these have a Universal connection.

You may also remember back in 2012 Hip-O-Select released both Earl Van Dyke's albums along with a number of bonus tracks, including a number of which back then were describes as "previously unreleased". New copies of this 2CD set along with the accompanying booklet are also available on Ebay, but as is often the case these days the asking prices are crazy - close to $US175!

I have vinyls both of this album and Choker Campbell's assortment of Hitsville instrumentals. To me, neither is particularly noteworthy. The Campbell album is basically Vegas-style interpretrations, while the Van Dyke album is simply the original studio tracks with vocals stripped out and organ added.

The Supremes Sam Cooke album sounds fine to my ears and the packaging is nice too. I will buy the EVD release and hope for more to come - especially if they concentrate on the least released albums on CD. Maybe they'll do Country, Western, Pop by The Supremes next - the official CD is long out of print. Also. I'm a fan of the mini-disc format.

This new CD mini-LP arrived today from Japan. Has 5 bonus tracks too. Earl Van Dyke "That Motown Sound". Looks great - yet to play it but the sound on the Oldays "We Remember Sam Cooke" CD by The Supremes was fine I think.

The CD sounds as good as it looks - wonderful clear stereo. According to Discogs, Oldays Records is a Japanese reissue label, run by Clinck Co., Ltd. [[president, Kazuo Nagano). All the releases are of expired out of copyright music for which the term is 50 years under Japanese laws. In that regard, perhaps on a par with UK Hallmark's Motown catalogue. Have to say I love 'em because the sound is good and they are in mini-LP format.

And now I know that the next Oldays Motown release on mini-LP will be.......The Supremes "A Bit Of Liverpool" on June 15th.

While I wrote that “WE REMEMBER SAM COOKE” is a must to avoid because of the butchered “You Send Me” and the sound quality that’s far below the various CDs released and the available iTunes download, OLDAYS’ “THAT MOTOWN SOUND” sounds flawless.

Hip-Oselect’s edition of the album is taken from the master tapes and is therefore the one to get - not even taking into consideration there’s much more EVD material on it. But OLDAYS’ mini lp cd gives us the original artwork, and quality wise, there’s nothing to complain about.

A great release!
I’m glad I got it.

Obviously, the release of these tracks in an album format was largely Berry Gordy's way to offset the money he was paying Earl to head up, or actually be the "glue" as he was known as, of his studio musicians...The Funk Brothers. Earl was making in excess of $100,000 a year which was a lot of money for a studio musician in Detroit back in the 60's...but Earl was an integral part of those classic tracks and Berry knew that if ANYBODY...it was Earl he needed to keep financially happy, and maybe Jamerson and a couple of others too. Certainly, Earl had little of the autonomy of a guy like Booker T had down in Memphis, where he could play the sessions AND release recordings and tour as a separate entity from just being a studio musician...Put Earl and his B1 in the studio to play some leads on existing Funk Brothers tracks done for their primary acts, release it in an LP...and whatever money the album brings in helps offset part of the money he gets for his studio responsibilities...and also gives him a sense of importance to the company...

I agree that the one to get in the Hip-O release. If you like to have different CDs or simply have to have everything, then I'm sure this latest release will not disappoint. There is another version available, of course, being the bootleg Marginal CD from Belgium. This combined "That Motown Sound" plus bonus tracks with the Choker Campbell "Hits Of The Sixties" album. Now the Choker Campbell could make a nice Japanese mini-LP.

Here is a note about Motown instrumental cd's & songs.

I taught math at a local high school.

Another math teacher was a musician who played the organ at lots of local functions like St Patty's Day, etc.

So I loved to put a cut from the Funk Brothers on the computer while we we both in the office. I then would say, "What song is this John?"

He always got it right.

Man, he knew so many songs
___________________________________

another musical fun we had, he brought his organ to the math Xmas party. So I brought my trombone.

He opened up his song book to a song?

I went over to him. I just pointed to notes & said, "

What note is this?"

Then I could play along with him. Trombone is bass cleff.

But my teacher taught us to translate from the other two cleffs,
but I had forgotten. All he had to do was tell me a few notes
& I could translate.

On his Birthday, remembering Earl Van Dyke [1930-1992]........

Happy Birthday Earl Van Dyke.

Just by way of update, "That Motown Sound" was released on an individual Motown CD album in 2019 as part of the Motown 60 celebrations in Japan. This is a lovely release.

I bought a brand new sealed copy of Earl Van Dyke's "That Motown Sound" LP for mere pennies in a department store close-out bin back in the mid-'60s. The album contains the actual instrumental tracks used on each of the respective Motown hits contained within. Earl's organ passages were inserted to replace the original lead vocals. The rest of what you hear is exactly what we heard on the radio, minus the vocals.

The Andantes' backing vocals on "All For You" are what made me fall in love with their magnificent harmonies. I immediately recognized their vocal blend on "All For You" as the same blend I'd been hearing on pretty much all of the Motown artists' records. Finally, everything I'd been hearing -- and LOVING -- was coming together!

I agree, Mystery. Earl Van Dyke's "That Motown Sound" has the coolest of album covers! For me, my favorites of the collage are the reel of tape on the master tape deck; the microphones; the record-cutting machine, and the spread of Motown/Gordy/Tamla 45s. [[It's always bugged me that they left out the Soul label. By then, Jr. Walker and Jimmy Ruffin had been enjoying hits. Leaving out Soul just wasn't right! I just might have to have words with Berry about that! HaHa!)

I think 'That Motown Sound' on vinyl was released both in mono and stereo in US and Canada?

I still have my UK copy somewhere, but think it was released here in mono only...?

But, for me, "All For You" sounds best in stereo.

And for me...so, when I bought my vinyl copy, that's why it took me just a while to wish that my copy had actually been in stereo.

Something was missing from 'That Motown Sound'......

My cut-out bin copy of "That Motown Sound" LP was in Mono. Just now, I compared the Mono version of "All For You" with the Stereo version. I choose the Mono version in which The Andantes are out front and prominent. In the Stereo version, the girls are half-buried in the mix. Thus, my preference for the Mono version.

While on the topic....

Can anyone remember if there were any differences between the UK 45 of 'All For You' [mono, of course] and same track on mono LP 'That Motown Sound'?

And which also reminds me....

What was the radio show where it was used, at least for the opening theme....

And the radio show which used Choker Campbell's 'Mickey Monkey'?
