The late 1960s were a tumultuous time for the iconic Supremes, as tensions budded among its founding members, Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard. In 1967, Motown Records founder Berry Gordy separated Ross’s name from the group, briefly renaming them “Diana Ross & the Supremes,” spotlighting Ross above Wilson and Ballard. In response to this shift in group dynamics, Ballard had several outbursts [[both inside and outside of public performances) and was soon replaced by Cindy Birdsong.

Shortly after, in February 1968, The Supremes travelled to Stockholm, Sweden for a six-night residency at the Berns Hotel. During these performances, The Supremes cut a promotional 45” featuring medleys from their Greatest Hits compilation, which was released the previous year. Although the tracks included on The Supremes’ Greatest Hits feature Ballard’s original recordings, their appearance at Berns reflects her replacement by Birdsong.
