I love the Supremes version of this song. They do a great job with it.

For me it was the weakest song on an otherwise very strong album. I just cannot understand why a so so cover of a recent so so pop hit was deemed good enough to be included especially when some of the outtakes are so strong. However i do love their version of Bridge, but then again it is such a beautiful song that it would be a difficult song to ruin. I don't even mind the Linda Clifford disco version, but i am veering off topic here.

As people are beginning to acknowledge, or at least the committed fans are beginning to speak to, Florence’s voice [[and Mary’s for that matter) were both either very pedestrian or not very good or not very distinctive. That’s why they weren’t lead singers. They do not stack up to Diana’s or Jean’s.

Their brilliance was in their blend with Diana’s voice and Jean’s voice.

Marv, I believe that the female vocalists on "Still Waters Run Deep" are Billie and Brenda from the Undisputed Truth. Though I can hear the similarity to the Supremes as you point out.

Speaking of sounding like Mary Wilson [[yet we know it wasn't), I always thought that one of the background voices on "Leave a Little Room" from the "Touch Me in the Morning" album sure did sound like Mary. Most of the posters on this thread are on my ignore list, but what I have learned from those not blocked is that Florence never recorded NNHH, but if she had it would have been better than Jean, who did [[but, perhaps, should not have) recorded NNHH, and which version would not have been as good as Diana's, had she [[though it seems she did not, and definitely should not have) recorded NNHH. Interesting stuff.

Most people I know liked it. In fact, we use to dance to it when it was originally released on the album back in '70. That sax solo gave it some grit!

Did you really think that?:rolleyes: I read MANY years ago that Diana sang backup on a Four Tops song. How true the claim is, I don't know. I can't remember the source but I almost recall the song title was never given. Diana being pulled into a Four Tops recording session wouldn't shock me. Diana allowing herself to be pulled into a Supremes recording session after she left, and Mary wanting to pull her into a Supremes recording session after she was rid of Diana, just doesn't seem likely.

People are beginning to acknowledge that? I see a bunch of different opinions floating around here about the voices of each of the three original Supremes [[and their replacements). Everyone has their favorite voices. Sadly some of the criticism leveled at Diana's voice is from people who have created an ax to grind with someone they've never even met. Equally as sad is that some of the criticism leveled at Florence and Mary as vocalist come from the need to exalt the Motown Queen and feeling there's more power in it when diminishing the talents of the ones around her. My gut tells me that Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight could've backed up Diana Ross in the Supremes and some folks would swear Ree and Gladys didn't have the goods.

The Supremes were brilliant together and apart in my book.

Yes I really Thought it from the first when it was released. And as soon as I heard it I thought it was Diana at the very end and friends of mine thought it too. [[ and some people hear think it’s possible as well). Mary and Diana maintained a connection for a # of years after Diana left . It was documented in a number of books.[[ Diana was godmother to Mary’s daughter, concert appearances together, party invitations, dinner ...)

Mary was fine as wine and her voice silk and sexy! She was the perfect counterpoint to the really high voices she sang with in the group. She was the only Supreme that was able to blend with different partners over the year's of the groups career. She was also the one that gave them their "visual appeal" in mine and a lot of guys opinions.......hehehehehehe!

There were times when either Flo or Diana might stray outside the blend and this highlights the brilliance of Mary's ability to harmonize. In those moments it's Mary who usually keeps the harmony on point. But when each of them was at their best, their harmony was perfect. IMO of the well known girl groups at Motown during the time, note for note, the Andantes had the best blend. The Supremes and Martha and the Vandellas tie at second. Both groups seemed to have the same strengths and weaknesses with slightly different approaches. The Velvelettes were third. They were great but the sound was a bit "stale" if you ask me. The Marvelettes should be thankful they had fantastic showmanship. I once read on a thread someone say that the Marvelettes could sing the Supremes under the table, or some such other statement. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I had to laugh at that one. I'll say no more.
