Frank J. Mercede
Stamford, CT - The Stamford Center for the Arts will host the 2nd Palace Gala Ovations on Friday, March 18, 2011 and honor Stamford native Frank J. Mercede and soul icon Diana Ross at a benefit concert featuring Diana Ross. Mr. Mercede will receive the Arts Ovation Award, and Ms. Ross will receive the Arts Legacy award.

Frank J. Mercede has proven, through his commitment to various organizations, his community and his family, that one man can make a difference. Although charity may begin at home, his dedication to make the world a better place extends beyond the local level.

Mr. Mercede has been involved with various organizations over many years. He was a former Board of Director of Amity Bank, Friends of ARI, and the Stamford Boy’s and Girl’s Club and on the Advisory Boards of Trinity Catholic High School and Patriot National Bank. He is presently a member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Center of Stamford, the Mill River Collaborative, and Twin Meadows Playground. He has been a Cabinet Member of the American Cancer Society’s Regional Center since 2007, and in 2010, he participated and won the ACS’s first Battle of the Chef’s fundraiser competition. In December 2009, Frank was appointed by Mayor Michael Pavia as a Police Commissioner for the City of Stamford.

“Frank is an important part of the community of Stamford and has been for many years,” said Michael Widland, SCA Board of Directors Chairman. “He played an integral role, along with his father Nicholas Mercede and his company Frank Mercede & Sons, in building the Rich Forum in 1991 and again in 1997 in the expansion of the Palace Theatre stage and new lobbies. He has given selflessly to the community of Stamford, including SCA, and we are proud to honor him with the 2nd Arts Ovation Award.” Gala event Co-Chairs for the evening are SCA Trustee Lynn DiMenna of Darien and First Lady of Stamford, Maureen Pavia.

Diana Ross
Diana Ross is an artist who needs no introduction. During her career which has spanned five decades, she has inspired countless artists. Her music became the sound of young America in the ‘60s soon after she signed with Motown Records in 1961 with The Supremes. She embarked on her extraordinary solo career in 1970, and has not stopped since. That career includes an Academy Award nomination for her unforgettable role as Billie Holiday in Lady Sings The Blues, a Tony and Golden Globe Award, becoming a bestselling author, winning 8 American Music Awards and receiving The Kennedy Center Honors in 2007.

For the second consecutive year, SCA will award its annual Emerging Young Artist Scholarship [[$2,000) in the name of its Arts Legacy Award honoree [[this year Diana Ross) in 2012 to an aspiring young singer. The scholarship will provide a local student the opportunity to further his/her career, and Ms. Ross will be inspiring an entirely new generation of performers, continuing her legacy. Applicants will have to submit demos to SCA, and the winner will be chosen through an adjudication process.

The March 18th concert featuring Diana Ross will benefit the SCA’s Arts Education Program which presents various opportunities at The Palace Theatre in Stamford throughout the year. The concert and programs are made possible by the generous support of Presenting Sponsors RFR Realty and Purdue Pharma. Three programs are planned for this year including Summer Jazz in Stamford, a jazz intensive lead by Joe Corsello and Rick Petrone; the Triple Threat Performer intensive, directed by Broadway performer Arbender Robinson focusing on dancing, singing, and acting for the stage; and the return of Lumina String Quartet’s Chamber Music Institute for Young Musicians. For more information about these programs, contact SCA Director of Education Carol Bryan at 203-517-3431.

All performances are held at the Stamford Center for the Arts’ Palace Theatre, 61 Atlantic Street, Stamford, CT 06901.
