What was your first Motown 7" single?

Fun question - what was the first Motown/Tamla/Gordy/Soul 7"/45rpm you bought or that someone bought for you? Do you still have it?

The first Motown 7" I ever purchased myself was "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Marvin and Tammi. I've nearly completed my collection of singles for several artists and recalled fondly buying my first one, albeit used.

I think the first was REMEMBER ME by Diana Ross, bought for me by my mom. I believe NEITHER ONE OF US by Gladys Knight and the Pips was the first that I bought myself.

The Happening...it was in with a batch of about 25 used 45's my brothers landlord who was a jukebox operator gave me. [[the only other one I clearly remember getting in that batch was "People Are Strange" by the Doors) And I believe the 2nd one I got and first I purchased was Baby Love. Must have been spring of '68.

The year was 1968 & The Temptations "Cloud Nine" was my first Motown single purchase [[shorty followed by "Love Child", "For Once In My Life", "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"-Marvin Gaye Version & "Keep On Loving Me Honey"). And I received "If You Can Want" by Smokey & the Miracles as part of a birthday gift [[in spring 1968).

Mine was "Baby Love" by The Supremes. I bought it at Kelly's Korner in the Kensington section of Philly way back in 1964. I had other 45s at the time that were given to me, but this one was the first I officially bought with my own allowance money. I was 10 years old then.

The Marvelettes’ “When You’re Young And In Love” was my first if I’m remembering correctly. I received my first record player when I was six or seven. To start my collection, my father gave me a few 45’s from his huge collection...

I was gifted a "Love Child" 45 when I was 13 by someone who knew I loved the Supremes. By the time I reached the age where I was regularly purchasing music, the era of vinyl had passed but I'm pretty sure the first used Motown 45 I purchased was Martha Reeves and the Vandellas' "Taking My Love" at a giant flea market.

"Baby Love" was my first Motown single too. I went crazy when I heard it on the radio. Mama brought me after school to Bert's Camera and Records in Delmont Village to get it.

The first actual Motown label 45s I bought were:
Tamla 54028 Miracles "Way Over There"/"You Can Depend On Me", and Motown 1000 Satintones "My Beloved[[String version) in early 1960, but I had bought 3 "Motown leased records in 1959, [[Marv Johnson "Come To Me" [[UA), Barrett Strong "Money" [[Anna), and Miracles "Bad Girl" [[Chess). I got Strong's record on Tamla in 1962, Marv Johnson on Tamla in 1964, and Miracles on Motown in 1969. I got the earlier version of The Miracles' "Way Over There" and Satintones without strings in 1961.

I had also bought Eddie Holland's "Merry-Go-Round" on UA, which had been on Tamla. I found the Tamla issue in 1963. I also picked up all of the 1959 Tamla and Motown singles by 1965, or so, except for Tamla 54021, "Let's Rock", by Barrett Strong, which I still don't have [[but, I think only 1 copy is known to exist).

By spring 1960, I had already decided to buy[[collect) every Tamla and Motown [[Motown products) single, and all Albums other than Pop or novelty, that they would put out. I kept true to that policy until 1968, when the style of the main core of Motown's music changed, and they had too many LPs out for me to be able to afford.

I bought a 45 of MONEY on the Anna label a few years ago , in terrible condition at a record show for something like fifty cents, but I don't care about the condition. I just like holding it in my hand and looking at that label and thinking, "this is the one that started it all!" :cool:

"Locking Up My Heart" by the Marvelettes in April 1963 on the Oriole label, which was the first single I bought to play on my first record player. And would you believe that record player is in better working order than I am!
