Any P.P. Arnold fans out there? I've been a fan of hers for quite a number of years. If Tina Turner and Mick Jagger had a love child, P.P. Arnold's voice would be that child. Her version of "The First Cut is the Deepest" [[the first version!) is by far the best version and one of my favorite songs. After starting her career out as an Ikette, she abandoned the act in England in 1966 and began and grew her solo career there, releasing her debut single [[aforementioned) and album [[The First Lady of Immediate) the following year. After the release of her sophomore album, Kafunta [[check out the cover art for that one - wild!), the label she was on folded and she found herself searching for a new home.
Here's where her latest release, The Turning Tide, comes in. Between 1969 and 1971, Arnold began working with Barry Gibb, as well as Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Doris Troy, Rita Coolidge, among others, on a series of sessions slated for her third album. Sadly, although product was plentiful, no album came out of these sessions.
Her third album, The Turning Tide, has FINALLY been released within the last month or two and I got my copy today [[a signed vinyl edition and a signed CD copy!!). I've listened to most of the album so far and I am BLOWN. AWAY. It is a stellar album and makes the fact that it wasn't released forty-six years ago all the more shameful. Arnold's voice is truly in full-bloom here, and the production is top-notch. Full-scale production with lush strings, powerful backgrounds, and songwriting worthy of a Stones album.
If you have not gotten a copy yet, do it now. Unfortunately the CD's are sold out for now, but they do have vinyl and digital copies left [[for the CD fans, make sure to scour eBay, Amazon, or Discogs).
