With all the great expanded editions and releases, a ton of tracks have emerged from the vaults. Some perhaps were justified in being relegated to the can lol. But some are amazing. What's been ur favs so far? Let's try one per group [[or at least one per group lineup)

MRATV - A Little Bit Of Heaven [[On a Little Patch of Earth)

Sup w Jean - tears left over

Sups w Scherrie - I can never recover

Mary Wells - secret Love

Four tops - hmmmm something from their Breaking Through jazz album. I'll have to re listen and pick one!

I love the entire 4 Tops "Breaking Through" album. I think it's great at showing the Tops' roots, especially the live cut with Billy Eckstine. I understand why it was never released as that sound was not where Gordy wanted to focus, but I think it's a great album which certainly stacks up well - and in many cases better - than Motown's later and more obvious attempts to cross over to a more MOR audience such as Gordy's releases by Eckstine himself, or Barbara McNair, for example.

Marvin & Tammi's We'll Be Satisfied should have been used instead of Marvin duetising some of Tammi's solo tracks. Or the real strange one of Tammi's solo I Can't Believe You Love me having its verses swapped around then duetised by Marvin. We'll Be Satisfied is a real duet and a great performance.

we could start a whole second thread on some of the unreleased lps

There's a Place for Us
Blue
To the Baby
a "real" Ross 78 lolol - that package they put out was useless especially given some of her vaulted tracks

As for singles, I thought of another

Kim Weston - You're Wonderful Sweet Sweet Love

I don't have the Martha Spellbound package in front of me for reference, but I LOVED that song that is something like "Hallelujah I Love Him So."

Another big mistake was never having a Motown artist sing "You Turned My Bitter Into Sweet", nor have The Funk Brothers record the track. Same for "Somebody Else, Somewhere [[Needs You)".

The Temptations - "That'll Be The Day"
How the hell was this thrown back into the vault? This was an A-side single.

The Contours - "Baby Hit And Run"
The Billy Gordon lead version is a smoking track. This definitely deserved a single release and possibly could have brought the Contours back to the top of the charts.

Four Tops - "Clip My Wings"
Beautiful Raynard Miner track. It sounds unfinished [[needs brass and strings), but it's shame this was put away.

Four Tops - "You Can't Keep A Good Man Down"
Another Raynard Miner track. This is one of my favorite Four Tops songs ever. This was definitely worthy of a single release.

Brenda Holloway - "Without Love You Lose A Good Feeling," "I'll Be Alright"
A few of my favorites from Brenda. After Mary Wells left, Motown should have gotten behind her and Kim and pushed them as their solo female stars. It's a shame because these songs showcase Brenda's talent.

Diana Ross & the Supremes - "Stormy"
One of their best, if not their best, unreleased tracks. I don't understand how they were including tracks from the Flo years on later DRATS albums when a track like this was left behind.

Kim Weston - "I'm Gonna Make It Up To You," "I Got A Weak Heart," "You Can Do It"
All three tracks are examples of the classic Motown sound that would have done well if they were singles.

The Velvelettes - "Let Love Live [[A Little Bit Longer)," "A Love So Deep Inside," "He's The One"
The Velvelettes have one of the best catalogs at Motown in terms of potential hits. These are stand outs that deserved attention.

Gladys Knight & The Pips - "If You Ever Get Your Hands On Love"
Again, how the hell was this not an A-side single? This screams hit to me.

Buttered Popcorn and so forth

MRATV - A Little Bit Of Heaven [[On a Little Patch of Earth)I was playing Martha & The Vandellas' Lost & Found a few weeks ago and my significant other couldn't believe "A Little Bit Of Heaven" was an unreleased song. He thought surely they knew it was so good, maybe they gave it to someone else to record, but then I looked up the song on DFTMC.info and found out no one else recorded the song.

It's funny, two days ago I was listening to the Supremes' Bend A Little and was also thinking how crazy it was to leave that one in the vaults. Same goes for I Can Never Recover. Those two get my vote. Some of the unreleased tracks on the Diana Ross Last Time I Saw Him Expanded Edition should have also been released in the 70's.

For me it's the 2015 released alternate takes of "Silent Night" and "O Holy Night"-Florence Ballard. Those first takes that we're released did not do her justice and I am baffled as to why those takes released in 2015 weren't the first versions released. Not only that but why did they not end up on the original album? I'm guessing Gordy really wanted to showcase Diana as the lead singer. Those 2015 versions really show me that Florence was greatly underutilized and should have been showcased much more. I really think she would have done well on Broadway. Everyone at Motown has commented on what a great singer Flo was and I don't think what's been released really does her justice.

Given what we’ve been told by George, Andy et al., my theory is that these takes may have only been recently unearthed. You’re right; they are stellar.

Agreed! I love all the songs The Supremes recorded for the '75 album, but I think it would have done better with more dance tracks like "Bend a Little", "I Can Never Recover", "Dance Fever", and "Seed of Love". Hard to believe they all stayed in the vaults.

What counts as the first track[[s) released "from the vaults"? Some sneaked out early on LPs without fanfare and some that received a release back in the day had been left in the can for a while [[e.g. "Jimmy Mack" [[1964)).

I guess it depends on how one defines "from the vaults." I would think that Mary Wells' VINTAGE STOCK album might have been one of the first examples of vault material being released, as diehards would have known that many of its songs had not been released until Mary left the label.

Yeah "Vintage Stock" from 1966 might be an early contender.
