I am always surprised to hear how people within the music industry were not fans of Diana's voice or some of the other members of the Supremes.

Its true that you can't please all the people all the time. Some members of the group, like Lynda and Scherrie, had voices which were fairly versatile with most material but not particularly distinctive. Others' voices were more "specialized," like those of the three originals, with each doing well only on certain types of numbers. [[Diane: light pop; Mary: ballads; Flo: more soulful numbers.) Jean was often quite shrill, which put some listeners off. Susaye's wide range was her stock-in-trade, but that did not appeal to a lot of people, while Cindy's voice was merely pleasant. Thus, I wouldn't say that any of these gals' voices held universal appeal, but that could be said of any group. Taken as a whole, there probably was something there for most tastes, but not all in one singer and not often at the same time.
