Inspired by the earlier posting of Milt Jackson, I thought a thread devoted to soulful? instrumentals could gain some traction
They were ubiquitous back in the 60's and 70's
Phil Upchurch " you can't sit down"
The Packers "Hole in the wall"
Stevie Wonder "easy going evening"
Not to mention the MFSB stuff, Herbie Hancock, Ramsey Lewis and many more.
But here's one right out of "left field" as you guys say

This one I recall straining to hear from an AM signal from around 500 miles away, fading in and out all the time

Hundreds of songs. The penguin breakdown/L J Reynolds:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOWvIMWKo7k

Fiddlin' around/Don Renaldo. Cracking number:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXARnQAVXhY

Ooh! Pretty lady/Al Kent. Underplayed these days. Floor filler in 73:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do6SW4A1z2w

And it does not have to be from the 60/70s to be soulful. This was released in 2014 with overtones of the mid 70s east coast Philly style:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9VY_QMPAYE

And this from 2013, again with a 70s groove:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDBggfmMZCg

And even this, due for release in the next 7 days. Think 60's Detroit, soul, blue eyed [[on the vocal). This release will have ten mixes. So the bar is high from back in the day, but there are a few trying to remain faithful to that sound with new creations:
https://soundcloud.com/bandtraxs/one-piece-of-cake-by-the-delgonives-sweet-mix

This is not a dedicated instrumental as just the vocals removed, nevertheless for 2008! Earl Young on drums, Bobby Eli and Dennis Harris on guitar, T G Conway on keys, Jimmie Williams on bass, Rikki Hicks of percussion. A TSOP of sorts: -

This was the jam in my junior year of high school. We played it at the clubs and parties that little cats were allowed to attend. The local radio station used to spin it, even though I don't think it was released as a single.

This is a funk/rock mash up that I don't think any of my friends listened to in spite of being my jam. Love hearing it played through speakers and with the volume turned up. The bass and drums are tight and the guitar is sublime but crucial. If you don't know what we lost when soul/R&B transitioned away from live drums to electronic ones, listen to this.

War produced an album for their harmonica player, Lee Oskar, and it had two of the finest instrumentals I ever heard on it. This is the one that used to ease us down the road to Virginia from Ohio when my dad put it in the 8-track. [[Pardon all of the pops on the video; the poster didn't clean it up so they might be a little distracting.)

Wow, you listed all my favorites, especially Soul Serenade and Mercy, Mercy Mercy! But Soul Serenade was my dad and uncle's favorite and I'm smiling right now thinking of them. Thank you for your list.

Don't forget those basement house parties with the red light!Hot and sweaty affairs, weren't they? If somebody wants to write a story about the black city experience, it needs to include a barber shop [[with two barbers, the oracles of the community), church, city buses and house parties [[almost always in somebody's basement). Also, block parties. These all stand out greatly in my experience and pretty much everybody that I know.

Jer! I forgot about the block parties! Plug your boomin' system to the street lamp. Close off both ends of a block. Add neighbors & much food. Fun had by all!!!

Interesting that Percy Faith gets a mention there.

Puts me in mind of a favourite of mine which seemed to generate an awful lot of interest in soul circles but folks will also deny it's a soul record. Paul Mauriat's "Love Is Blue" and i just love it.

It went to [[U.S. Pop #27, U.S. AC #3). I don't think it was on the Soul/R&B chart or at least not as high.

That's what I thought. It always sounded like a Motown track to me, and that was before I knew about moonlighting members of the Funk Brothers, let alone the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
