I was listening to this today and it made me think of the many great tracks by former Motown Artists that are rarely heard or played. We may have all have heard of these songs at one time or another, but they are generally not played on radio stations, not even on oldies. You may not have even played them at home in years. Here are a few of my favorites. What are some of yours:

Eddie Kendricks - Diamond Girl.......

That was a common practice in the 50s and 60s....."answer records". Even the Miracles did it with "I Got A Job" in response to "Get A Job" the Silhouettes.

Strange that all these years later Hip Hop artist have discovered Jean's album and more than a few have sampled "No Limit" from it. Go to Youtube and type in "No Limit Sample".

Cool. Never knew that. How I love Miss Jean!

Jean is amazing because her music has influence many of different generations. College and High School kids all over the country still sing "Up the Ladder to the Roof" in choirs, vocal ensemble groups etc.

While there is no longer a classic soul station in my area, just a contemporary one that plays six neo-souls for every one seventies-eighties classic and goody, "Oldies" radio today is mostly British-Psychedelic as their sixties, the rest, basically another mix station of seventies and eighties. I was once incredibly surprised I actually heard "Super Freak" on oldies recently, myself used to remember "oldies" meant mid-fifties-early seventies.

Yes, while they still normally have "My Girl" and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" in their rotation, it's been years since I last heard on radio:

A lot of great tracks listed so far. I really don't listen to the radio anymore so a lot of songs that I hear are from my own rotation via ipod and laptop. But some of my favorite Motown and post Motown that seem to be underplayed for radio include:

The Miracles "What's So Good About Goodbye"

Martha Reeves and the Vandellas "Taking My Love and Leaving Me"

Marvin Gaye "You"

Teena Marie "365"

Edwin Starr "Happy Radio"

Diana Ross "Surrender"

Thelma Houston "Doing Wrong For So Long"

Four Tops "I'm In a Different World"

Four Tops "Main Street People"

Kim Weston "It Should Have Been Me"

There appears to be no interest in a show playing soul music that a lot of people on here regularly complain is not played on radio shows. I'm at a loss to understand this.
It can't be the music, so it must be me
Perhaps it's because I'm from the UK?

I think the real reason so many have not taken time to enjoy your well thought out shows is exactly that.........time! For me, Sunday afternoons are the few free hours I get during the week. I can't speak for others.

Oh Marv, what a track. The only time I've ever heard that played on British radio is when I put a request in for it some years back. However I put a request into snakepit who played 3 glorious Bobby Taylor tracks a couple weeks back on his show.
Can I add The Temptations Hevenly please excuse me if the clip does not work it's my first attempt to add one.

Hey snakepit, honestly, I think people when they say 'radio' mean the thing you turn on in the car or in the kitchen and leave on in the background. Your show is fantastic and plays great, rare stuff but of course it is not the conventional 'radio' that people just 'stick on'.

Marv is right when he says you actually have to take time to seek your show out and listen to it. You can't just 'stick it on' I guess. Just my thoughts. :)

I remember the Temptations' singles during the late nineties. When I first heard "Stay", from the sampling of their own "My Girl", the Temptations-styled harmonies, to Ron Tyson's Temptations-classed falsetto, I guessedly joked "Temptations?", before the contemporary soul station did say "Temptations", then my eyes bulged.

While "Stay" still continues to maintain regular enough rotation to some contemporary soul stations even today, as well as it being included in Temptations Collections as its "They're Still Around" representative, then it was followed up with "This Is My Promise". I forgot if it was led by Theo Peoples or Terry Weeks, but I absolutely fell in love with its toasting serenade, and pure class of appreciation towards the lady in which the subject of serenading.

"Stay" stayed continuing in rotation, but "This Is My Promise" for the most part, remained in 1998/1999.

I enjoyed listening to that again. , barely a radio hit or chart performer [[ #47 pop, #93 soul), so you had to be a clubber back then to really know of the song . But if you were , you knew it inside and out .... it was huge in the discos and topped that chart @#1. [[Shame on Motown to let this one get away)

If you bought the commercial 12" you got as the flip Jermaine' LETS BE YOUNG TONIGHT.

If you were lucky enough to get the promo 12" , Motown provided you with this song [[#90 soul):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELGVpNpR7Hk

lushly orchestrated , strongly Philly ,kind of Spinners sounding to me
in fact any minute I expect Philippe Wynne to join in !

ps Marv I think Eddie's INTIMATE FRIENDS was his last hurrah for Motown. I liked listening to that . Eddie had great pacing , not afraid to sing a tune for as long as the tune takes.

A couple years ago, during one of my daily trips to my area's big local antique mall, at one point, the place was playing a virtual back-to-back-to-back Motown marathon. One of the songs played, that I truly found a positively interesting gesture at remembering it enough to play in inclusion with the top twenties, Shorty Long's "Function At The Junction".

This Stevie Wonder 45 plug side didn't do too well in the charts in the mid 60's ... so the 45 was flipped by radio DJ's & the other side did better .. by then though it had affected the release plans of Amy Records who retitled Lou Ragland's upcoming 45 track as "I Travel Alone" ... this is a bit like PLACE IN THE SUN ...

I remember this record most because of the noticeable change in Stevie's voice. It became deeper and smooth as he grew up. Thank you for this memory.

Popular Commonly Played Hit: "In My House"

Uncommonly Rarer Rest: The rest, but I presume that's according from region to region, big city areas, and if region has a decent classic soul / urban station around such. Mine used to, but not anymore, but I still remembered when I first heard "All Night Long" on it, its groove was easily confusable with what a more nineties-like girl group would do, than being ahead of its time in the early eighties.

And, I remember the first time I listened to "Boys" on an urban mix station, its beat just as melding with the contemporaries it would play during the late nineties, I listened on a bus, brightly smiling at downtown Chicago's sights when I was thirteen.

Definitely one of those "unsung" rockers! In structure, "Something About You" creates a tension and drive in the verses, backed by the great Funk Brothers, and the release of that tension on the chorus, "There's something about you, baby. That's makes me keepa lovin' you!"

Another one of my favourites is Little Stevies' "Teach me tonight" I love the vocal interjections that sound remarkably like Levi, altho' I believe they are from Clarence Paul.
I cannot find a link to a playable recording and would much appreciate it if someone could and post it on here.
My copy is tucked away somewhere in the attic
Please keep this thread going, I'm really enjoying it

You know, Richy, I had never even heard that one before, it's great. Oh, yea, I hear Levi Stubbs on there too. How great.

Wait, that's Clarence Paul? It really sounds like Levi. I've never really heard Clarence sing though so...? :)

Thanks for that Tomato Tom Wow the memories come flooding back, I remember every Friday lunchtime I would go to a certain pub in a boisterous Naval town, as the jukebox was always restocked then, I would sift thro' the records being removed and pay the guy a shilling[[dime, I suppose) for each one I wanted. On this one occasion I got a well worn copy of Stevies' "I was made to love Her" Later that evening I presented it to my then Girlfriend, now my Wife, you would have thought I'd given her a diamond ring

Here is a bit simpler way of inserting a video. Copy the video's URL, come back to Soulful Detroit. Then on the little task bar above where you posts your comments click on the little "film role" icon that is second from the end of icons on the task bar. Once you click on it ,a space bar will pop up, past the video URL in the empty bar. Then you can continue typing outside of the URL brackets or you can just click "post quick reply" at the bottom.

Hey Marv
Couldn't agree more. I love these pseudo live studio recordings, Money is another as you are well aware. also like the Supremes'
"Someday well be together" Johnny Bristol sounds like he is at the back of a rather large auditorium don't you think
Regarding party records, I have only ever worn out one record and that was The Temptations first greatest hits album, you could put that on with the autochanger arm back and it would play continuously, after 4 or 5 times some would eventually turn it over and repeat.

Oh RichyP you are totally right on with this entry! Jackie Wilson would have been Motown's big star if it were not for his contract with Brunswick. This reminds me of a story. About 5 years ago my mother took me down to the old Civic Auditorium in Toledo, Ohio where Jackie Wilson and all of the early [[soon to be ) Motown stars played. She showed me the wooden dance floor and the wooden stage where Jackie use to glide across, fall down on his knees and sing the roof off of the place! This was in the 1950s and she and my father were big fans!

Another bit of trivia. Berry Gordy's first two weddings were in Toledo!

I've seen the tempts in various incarnations over here, 4 times, as I said the other day, I saw Jimmy Ruffin and saw Mary Wells 1964 I think on the Beatles tour, but they were all in large theatres where there was limited atmosphere I did however see Junior Walker and the All Stars, in 1965/6 at the Shaftsbury theatre in London and boy was there an atmosphere there. A few months later the Theatre was closed for several years for refurbishment, apparently plaster had been falling from the ceiling, I always chuckle when I see Juniors Blow the House Down cover.
We had four or five nice clubs accessible in the mid 60's and 3 or 4 bands that regularly played them. Georgie Fame, Prince Buster, and Jimmy James spring to mind[[ he could really get a conga going singing "Amen" he would leave the dance hall go through the bar, out thro the kitchens, on thro the cloak room back to the dance hall with maybe 100 to 150 of us in tow) great atmosphere.

Georgie Fame, Prince Buster, and Jimmy James spring to mind[[ he could really get a conga going singing "Amen" he would leave the dance hall go through the bar, out thro the kitchens, on thro the cloak room back to the dance hall with maybe 100 to 150 of us in tow) great atmosphere.
aaH memories, you realise you guys are my therapists, keeping the old grey matter churning, but don't bill me

You're not old....stop it! You guys were just the big kids when I was starting school......................LOL!!!

Hey Marv
You must, I insist go and find Georgie Fame and The Blue Flames Rythmn and Blues at the Flamingo this is typical of those clubs I spoke about
I did get to the Flamingo once, but it had become too famous by then. I think it was Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band when I was there, he was another on that club circuit I spoke about.

It may seem that I have veered off topic here, but these groups were heavily into Motown, Check out Georgies version of "Pride and Joy"

I am promising myself a trip over there as soon as I can. I have always wanted to visit. I am a Coronation Street addict so I want to hear people that talk like that in person! LOL Love it.

LOL, I didn't know afternoon soap operas from the UK were so popular in America!

Love "Oh, How Happy" so much... especially this version by The Jackson Five which might be my favourite...

I just watched today's episode. My biggest complaint about the show is that they took the most beautiful, gorgeous woman on television anywhere in recent times off......Carla Connors , but left Fiz on the show? Good Grief LOL!!!!

I've known about this album all of my life practically but never listened to anything from it until. Gramps does a good job on this one. I still give the J-5 the edge.

A house party favorite from 1965! VELVELETTES- "A BIRD IN HAND [[IS WORTH TWO IN THE BUSH)"

This sounds a different mix to that which has appeared on the 2 Velvelette compilation albums. Am I right?
