I wrote a book a while back based on the long career of Balto soul man Kenny Hamber. Much of the book focused on the Baltimore & Maryland soul scene from the late 40's thru to the late 60's [[When Kenny relocated to New England).
Anyway, as they were such important venues in the 60's, I dedicated a whole chapter to the Carr's & Sparrow's Beach resorts.
So I did lots of research & turned up loads of info / ads for shows staged on the beach [[black resorts back then).
Find below an ad for a show staged in Aug 65. The top 3 acts that day were the Tops, Temptations & Marv Johnson [[just about back in the Motown fold by then).
MY QUESTION ... the only instrumental band ID'ed on the ad were the Shyndells, a Balto / DC based band who backed up a few artists who had 45's out in the 60's on Baltimore based Ru-Jac Records. The band also played gigs every week at many venues around the Maryland / DC area.
Q Q Q ... at that time, would Detroit & Motown's management have let 3 of their acts go off for a far flung gig without any house=-musicians going along to provide back up ??

I don't know for sure, but I would think that each act would have had at least a few of their own musicians who could integrated into whatever local musicians the promoter might have hired.

This was very enlightening. I assumed from the introduction that the events were held at Sparrows Point which is adjacent to Baltimore. However, I discovered by checking Google that the events were held in Annapolis which is a distance from Baltimore. If you go to www.carrsbeach.com there is a great story about the park. It mentions Aretha Franklin performing there but no mention of any Motown artists. This is surprising as in 1965 Motown was heading for the top so to speak. Another website reached by a Google search indicates that Aretha Franklin performed there. The Carrsbeach one did not.

From the early 60's thru to about 1968, there were top acts performing @ Carr's Beach resort every weekend of the summer.
During that time just about every top soul act played the venue [[& in the early 60's, to a lesser degree Sparrow's Beach). I can post up numerous ads listing the acts booked there [[as I did extensive research for the book I wrote).
Some of the Baltimore radio DJ's [[Hot Rod, Rockin Robin) staged big celebration shows there on which a lot of the acts performed for free [[no doubt getting loads of radio plays due to their actions).

In late May 66 the folks in the Baltimore area were spoilt for choice.
On Sunday May 29th they had a show @ Carr's Beach headlined by Tammi Terrell.
On Monday, same venue, they had the James Brown Revue.
BUT back in Balto, on that Friday @ the Civic Centre, they could go see Stevie Wonder, the Marvelettes & 7 other top acts . . .
