Hey gang,how many of us have albums that are just not good,and i mean awful...some that i have are..have mercy-don covay[only good song is the title song]...who wrote the book of love-the monotones[a collection of thier work but they deserved better]...current-heat wave[not thier best work]...steppin out-the chi-lites[this one is sad because it is the chi-lites with eugene record,a piece of crap]ok gang let it all out!!

A "bad" album is always a subjective call. If I get an album with only one or two good songs on it, i'll rip those to the hard drives and get rid of the CD, or whatever.

Right now I can't think of any bad albums I have, but i'll list one if I think of it later.

It seem to happen to me regularly whenever I would buy follow up albums of artists that had started off with great albums.

I bought an album by Teena Marie's backing band, Ozone, and it is one of the best records in my collection. They played like a younger version of the Crusaders in that album, which was exciting because I'm a huge Crusaders fan. Their second album broke and I bought it without hearing it, only to hear a bunch of horrible pop tracks masquerading as punk rock. I played it twice and forgot about it. I still listen to the other one 30 years later. What a missed opportunity.

Oh no! His best albums were made in the mid-70s. "He's A Friend" and "The Hit Man" were the two best ones. Hell, "Boogie Down!" was also classic.

I'll confess to 2: The Ohio Players Mr Mean soundtrack and Ramsey Lewis's Tequila Mockingbird. Good Luck Charm is the only track that I love on the first and what makes the second hurt even more is that Maurice let Larry Dunn EWF's keyboardist produce it and IMO

I'm a huge fan of SOLAR records from back in the '80s. They had one year where they dumped a bunch of albums full of tracks that were obviously left off of the artists previous releases. The tracks were inconsistent in quality and many of them seemed like they were not final mixes. I bought albums by Lakeside, the Whispers, and Shalamar that had maybe one track each that was playable and I am a big fan of those outfits. What a shameless money grab.

"Tequila Mockingbird"? That's a classic album! I like it. Is it anything like "Don't It feel Good" or "The In Crowd"? No, but it's good.

That would be the year 1981 when they switched distribution from RCA to Elektra, right? Those albums had at least one good song on them, and the rest filler.

steppin out-the chi-lites[this one is sad because it is the chi-lites with eugene record,a piece of crap] i'm a sucka for synthfunk lol, so tracks such as "Gimme What Cha Got", "Keep Coming Back For You" and "Stop What You're Doing" are earcandy to me. There's also a great slowjam on "Steppin' Out". And the song "Bottom's Up" from their album before "Steppin' Out" rocks in the pocket, together with the expanded single mix. I remember being at a funk festival around the late 90's/early 00's, when "Bottom's Up" blew through the speakers for a packed dancefloor. Excellent party. Even once bought a promotional poster of their 1983 joint.

Yeah, Ozone's debut album "Walk On" is indeed a pleasure to hear, and a special project because it's totally instrumental, next to all their mainly vocal releases. Other favourite Ozone rotations:

Right on. I remember seeing interview footage on the website of Ozone's bassplayer, where he told how thrilled he was when working with Teena Marie in the studio for Gigolette.

Some years ago, there appeared online a mini concert from 1982 by Ozone. Not shure though if they performed Gigolette.

Years back, i have seen an interesting remaster on a website which specialises [[or specialised?) in Motown releases [[Teena Marie's debut album was another reissue on that website). Anyway, the Eddie Kendricks project i saw there has a 70's front cover of him sitting in a chair at a blue-ish photo studio.

At the moment i have Eddie's albums "Love Keys" [[1981) and "I've Got My Eyes On You" [[1983, produced by the SOS Band).

Hey, Ramsey Lewis released a string of awful easy listening albums on the Chess label in the late 60s and early 70s after he did "Another Voyage". It's like he did them just to get out of his contract.

I'm a huge fan of The Whispers collaboration with Leon Sylvers and Dick Griffey, but that album was trash. The fact that it was released on the heels of a much better record [["Love Is Where You Find It") was problematic for me.

Now that I think about it, Lakeside's release followed "Fantastic Voyage". Releasing discarded material in the wake of successful albums was borderline deceptive marketing.

Just saw it online. It's actually a compilation: Keep On Truckin' - The Motown Solo Albums, Volume 1. The background on the frontcover is blue, although Eddie is not sitting in a chair, but he is in a framed portrait from the middle to his top, and looking sideways in the camera.

I forgot the exact reason Dick Griffey released all of those albums, but it was connected to his lawsuit against RCA, and his move to Elektra distribution.

Bell brothers, I loved you all but JT's introduction to the group may have gotten you guys
big hits but it was the beginning of the end of the Kool sound, IMO...
Anyway, I wanted to add another to my thankfully short list of bad releases. Dr Buzzard's
Savannah [[they didn't even bother with the phrase "Original") Band's Calling All Beatniks
was largely a major fail. Like the later Ohio Players album, it was an album with basically
only one track that I thought was stellar and can still listen to today: the Cory Daye led
We Went Into This Thing. Her delivery gave me chills, otherwise I was like WTF?...

Excellent Jerry, indeed always great to hear songs which get you moving. From what i remember reading somewhere is that for a number of years, Collage used to be the touring band for The Whispers. I've heard audio from one of The Whispers' Budweiser shows at Anaheim, during their Rock Steady era. That was some impressive high energy gig.

Of course in all fairness to smokey,many of those songs were written by others and a bad song is a bad song no matter who's singing it.

I don't know about the whole album [[think there are a lot of covers, not great) but "When My Love Hand Comes Down" is a cracking tune. Also like "Your Love Is Worth Waiting For" and "Set 'Em Up [[Move In For The Thrill)" :)
