Happy birthday, Marv2, you have selected the real "icons" of classic soul. In fact, IMHO, apart from the fact that i'm a Philly Sound lover, "In Philadelphia" album by Wiked Pickett is the best IMHO and also in the opinion of many music criticals.
When I was younger and I was joyful and / or celebrating something, I started my particular "jam session" playing "I'm For Real" 45' by George Duke [[with the hilarious scream at the beginning), continued with "Fishbite" by Ramsey Lewis and "Nursery Rhymes" by People's Choice and "Berta But Booguie" by Jimmy Castor...

Of course, Marv! Many times I played this entire LP at the local radio - station of my town on my soul music program "Negre i Rosa" [[RCA, first half of the 80's). Some times I played 4 or 6 compilations of VVAA LP's, two turntables and along 1 hour, combining albums two by two [["Soul Food" with my favorite, "Time" by Mighty Clouds Of Joy, "Soul Train Super Tracks" with my favorite "A Mother For My Children" by The Whispers; "Let's Clean Up The Gheto" with my favorite "Now Is The Time To Do It" by Teddy;...). And about Angelo Bond, I purchased the "Bondage" album with the gem "Goodbay My Love"!

Interesting and funny stuff! BTW, in my case, before I started to studying in Barcelona I makes some journeys to this city to search some books... and ALBUMS, was the end of 1978 and I find the last O'Jays album, "So Full Of Love"; I was some deceived for the sound some "cheese" or bland, particularly on "She Used To Be My Girl"... I hated this song but more I heard, more I loved... Really my favorite tracks here are "Take Me To The Stars" and my absolute favorite "This Time Baby", IMHO much better than the cover by Jackie Moore I think from a year later, 1979.
Cheers to all!

I don't know if really The Spinners were the "great underrated" vocal group [[I think they got the fame they deserved) but I think the "Pick Of The Litter" is the most underrated album by them. I have on vynil from the 70's and I don't understand how a gem as "You Made A Promise To Me" was not a smash hit like "I'll Be Around", for example.
Some suggestions for Marv [[I think these are "classic jams"):
- "Lonely For So Long" - Frederic Knight
- "Love Means" - Carla Thomas
- "Mama Soul" - Soul Survivors
- "Take A Letter Maria" - R.B. Greaves
- "Ellie's Love Theme" - Isaac Hayes
- "Too Weak To Fight" - Clarence Carter
Some can be considered "ballads" or mid-tempos, but there's enough octanes on the vocals and rhythm section for to be a "jam"...

The Spinners did get a lot of love. But if you ask fans of pop music who the great soul acts are, they will list the Temptations, Four Tops, the O'Jays, and a host of other Motown or Philly acts before they name the Spinners. Another group similar was Maze [[on a much smaller level). Lovers of soul and R&B were all over Maze and the Spinners but if you went to their concerts, you probably had mostly fans of those genres instead of many crossover fans in the seats beside you. Michael was amazing. All the kids wanted to sing like him. He was our "Frankie Lymon". Jean Terrell's intro to "Stoned Love" was the sweetest sound Motown ever recorded and I always wonder how Wilson Pickett never burst his vocal chords the way he could scream and shout. LOL!

It is always amazing when Gladys tackles someone else song and makes it her own. Although not a huge hit, I think it's one of her best.

One of the great gems and covers by The Marvelettes.
I know you're not sincere and you'll never be
But still I want your kisses so desperately
I could never let you go
Baby even though I know
Every rule of love you disobey...

OK then - one of the most achingly beautiful soul ballads ever - Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles with I'm still waiting, Atlantic, 1965
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn5T8Jk4O8c
It use to drive me crazy that some people only remember them for "Lady Marmalade". They were always singers and for the life of me I cannot understand why producers and writers did not try hard enough to get hits on them back in the sixties. Did you know that it is the Bluebelles backing Wilson Picket on "634-5789"?

I would have posted that if you had not done so! Not just the Supremes' greatest record, but one of the culminating anthems of soul
I've this song since I first heard it in 1970. When Obama took office, I related the line in the song "and to the man, with the whole World on his shoulders............" to him as we were still in a deep economic crisis Worldwide. The song is timeless. Pray for peace! Amen!

This is a great thread you have created. I have been thinking about making CDs of these awesome selections. Also, what I like is as we all contribute there maybe some songs I am not as familiar with that now I need to add to my collection and hopefully the same for others. That's was part of my thoughts when posting Gladys & The Pips "Part Time Love".
Thanks again Marv!

I remember in my teens in the restaurant were I worked during the high school days, there was some Soul compilations [[Spanish CBS Philly Sound vols. 1 & 2, Atlantic's "Hits & Soul" serie,...) and there was also a compilation by ABC licensed by spanish Movieplay entitled "Ultrasonidos para discotecas" with the bomb "Rufusized"by Rufus feat. Chaka Khan! I think they were pioneers in the style they used synthesizer and the vocoder, I think before than herbie hancock. Anyway, my favorites are "Dance with me" [[the bombastic bass line at the end" and the great deep, screaming vocals by Chaka on "You Got The Love". There was a nice and unique fusion between rock and soul in the seventies [[San Francisco scene, etc.) with people like Sylvia Smith, Cold Blood or the same Rufus that, sadly, never again I have heard after these years...!
Cheers to all.

Aretha Franklin - Master Of Eyes [[The Deepness Of Your Eyes) Probably her most powerful, most underrated song that I remember first hearing on the radio in February of 1973. We went out to look for it on an album.
