I never realized the man was a raging alcoholic. What a waste of a huge talent.

I had read some things about him being reclusive but wow this has been a bad year! I liked his songs home and dry, Right Down the Line [[my favorite) and of course Baker Street. I was just reading about him a few months ago and heard an interview that he did. RIP Gerry I will miss your music.

Baker Street stands as one of the ultimate tracks of the 70s..superb production..instantly recognisable and took you back to that period in music history..Right Down The Line was my favourite song of his..an outstanding cut with a nice mellow flow and wnderful singing and harmonies RIP x

R.I.P. Gerry Rafferty. Let's listen to Baker Street.by Elizabeth Bromstein on Jan 4, 2011 32 Comments

Scottish singer- songwriter Gerry Rafferty has died aged 63 after a long illness and battle with alcoholism.

Rafferty was the writer behind such memorable hits as Baker Street and Stuck In the Middle With You.

He was born in Paisley, near Glasgow, to a Scottish mother and Irish father. When he was young he worked in a butcher's shop and at the tax office, while on weekends he played in a band called the Mavericks with Joe Egan. He later joined [[the now famous comedian) Billy Connolly in the Humblebums. Together they released The New Humblebums [[1969) and Open Up the Door [[1970).

Rafferty later branched out into a solo career, releasing his first album Can I Have My Money Back? In 1971.

In 1972 Rafferty and Egan formed Stealers Wheel, best known for the hit Stuck in the Middle With You – which was introduced to a new generation during a gruesome scene in Quentin Tarantino's 1993 movie Reservoir Dogs. According to an obituary, written by Rafferty's former manager Michael Gray, in UK paper The Guardian, Stealers Wheel discovered that their royalties had been filched and they split up in 1975.

Rafferty re-embarked on a solo career. In 1978 he released the smash hit single Baker Street -- known for its memorable sax solo.
Gray writes that Rafferty, who had always drunk too much, spiralled into alcoholism in the 1990s.

In November 2010, Rafferty was reportedly admitted to hospital in Bournemouth, Dorset, suffering from liver failure. His family was told that there was little chance of his survival and he was put on life support. He died on January 4, 2011.

Gray writes: "For two decades, alcohol had dominated this creative and intelligent man's life."

Here's Baker Street.
