What qualified as a Motor Town Revue back in the day ??
........ this certainly did .......
217

jsmith
08-09-2010, 08:54 PM
....... and this must have ......
218

jsmith
08-09-2010, 08:56 PM
... and this also seems to qualify .....
219

jsmith
08-09-2010, 08:58 PM
.... ..... but did this early 1963 package .... there was no Motown backing band ...
220
The 4 Motown acts had just completed a 2 month Motown Revue tour together
... [[see ad lower down) ......... guess Berry worked them hard back then.

jsmith
08-09-2010, 09:01 PM
221
... ...... the above must have qualified ......

jsmith
08-09-2010, 09:03 PM
222
.... this one was only 50% Motown .....

jsmith
08-09-2010, 09:05 PM
... and this one was under 50% Motown acts .......
223

jsmith
08-09-2010, 09:08 PM
... .... Gladys didn't qualify back then .....
.... so this package also had a small Motown content ....
224

jsmith
08-09-2010, 09:19 PM
.... this 1967 package was only 30% Motown acts .....
... but the Motown Big Band was providing back-up ...
.. so did this still qualify as a Motor Town Revue ? ..
225

The Monitors can't have been undertaking nationwide
tours much after this package played its last show.

Interesting to see The Supremes getting billing for such early releases.Usually they were left off advertising at this point..

Great posts, Jsmith. The ticket costs are a standout.

jsmith
08-10-2010, 03:16 AM
.... this must have been Jimmy Ruffin's 1st tour as a Motown artist [[October 1963) .....
236
....... and the package was an 'official' MOTORTOWN REVUE

nomis
08-10-2010, 03:32 AM
these clippings are great so much of this time isnt documented - there was so many shows lost in time,Even better a few of them have dates which is a great jigsaw piece for motown historians.

jsmith
08-10-2010, 03:54 AM
This show had under 50% Motown acts and yet had a Motown band backing the package
237
........ PLUS ........ the show's MC was [[the pre-Stax) Al Bell !!!!

jsmith
08-10-2010, 04:01 AM
I just noticed that the 1st 2 ads posted on this thread are for shows in 1963 that followed on from each other ...
but the package lost Mary Wells & gained the Miracles between leaving DC and arriving in Baltimore the next day !

jsmith
08-10-2010, 04:10 AM
238
Same package a month down the line. They had lost Marv Johnson but regained Mary Wells
......... mid June 63 ..... plus Stevie Wonder was now part of the line-up ..........
I guess the orders were coming from back in Detroit as to who should leave & join the touring ensemble.

This is why I love Motown so much -there is always something new to learn,The thread a few months ago where we traced The supremes first UK promotional tour was great.I hope that thread wasnt lost in this new makeover so much information is put on this site that you cant find anywhere else -This site itself is an important musical document.

Mary Wells arrived heading a package of non-Motown acts

..... a 1967 show in Baltimore ........
240
.... less than 50% Motown related

jsmith

No 'official' Motown acts on this bill as David Ruffin had left the Temptations .........
and had teamed up with his Fellas [[his 'Boys' in the ad who were really the Cavaliers)
......... however he would return to the Motown fold weeks later as a solo artist.
241

jsmith
08-10-2010, 05:24 AM
........ only the Marvelettes represented Motown on this bill ......
mind you, the Detroit Emeralds might just have been from 'back home'
242

jsmith

As Martha & the V's headed out of town in 1966 .....
.... other Motown artists were just arriving ...
243

jsmith

........ meanwhile, on the other side of town ......
Stevie & the Marvelettes were setting up shop ...

In Mary Wilson's book 'Dreamgirl' she makes mention of 2 tours that the Supremes were on with the Velvelettes .....
the 1st was on the road from mid October till Xmas 1962. It featured the Contours, Temptations, Marvelettes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells, Sammy Ward, Miracles, Supremes, Velvelettes + Chocker Campbell & his band [[according to Mary).
[[with such a long list of artists I guess only 6 or 7 were on each date & acts left + joined as required).
The 2nd tour she makes mention of was in 1964, being together from the end of May to beginning of September.
This time the tour was a Dick Clark Caravan of Stars package and featured pop & soul stars including Major Lance, the Shirelles, Crystals, Dixie Cups, Dee Dee Sharpe, Supremes & Velvelettes [[though she also makes mention of Diana getting into a fight with Brenda Holloway on this tour).
..... ANYWAY ......... I always thought that the Velvelettes did very few shows away from Michigan [[especially in term time due to school / college commitments)
.... MY QUESTION IS ....... was Mary wrong about the Velvelettes being on these tours OR did the group just play selected dates close to home ??

jsmith
08-10-2010, 07:16 AM
ANSWERING MY OWN QUESTIONS AGAIN ......... DOOOHH .......
Here's the Fall 1962 Motown Revue package which hit Washington at the end of October .....
245
9 Motown acts + Chocker's band .... BUT no Velvelettes [[guess they were back home).

jsmith
08-10-2010, 10:34 AM
Just 2 [[then) Motown acts on this 1962 package .........
246

jsmith
08-10-2010, 10:36 AM
Guess Marvin had gone home [[to DC) for these Xmas thru New Year shows ....
247

jsmith
08-10-2010, 10:40 AM
Anyone here got any similar show ads for the Apollo, the Fox or the Regal [[Chicago) ??

jsmith
08-10-2010, 02:32 PM
Two Motown artists plus Choker's band [[yet again) on this Oct 64 package ....
249

jsmith
08-10-2010, 02:35 PM
The Supremes on their return to Detroit following the 1964 Dick Clark Caravan of Stars shows ......
251

jsmith
08-10-2010, 02:46 PM
The Marvelettes must have been out on tour nonstop from 1962 to 1965 ........
252

jsmith
08-10-2010, 04:08 PM
Two Motown acts don't appear too much on these package tours ....
... the Spinners are the 1st of these, though they were featured here ....
253
I wonder why they didn't seem to get booked onto such tours too often ??

jsmith
08-10-2010, 04:12 PM
The other Motown act that don't feature much were Jnr Walker & the All Stars .......
254
From the mid 60's onwards, Jnr & his group were constant visitors to the UK
[[touring 2 / 3 times every year) and I guess they also played numerous live
shows across the U.S.
...... so why didn't they get included on these package tour bills ??

jsmith
08-11-2010, 03:37 AM
As soon as I post that Jnr Walker never seemed to be booked onto those
Chitlin circuit theatre tour packages ... I find this ad for a DC show in 1965 ...
265

jsmith
08-12-2010, 01:55 PM

I wonder how many shows on this 1964 tour they played ?

These clippings are CLASSIC! I love looking at old show ads from newspapers as well as posters. The Motortown Revue
was usually billed as such and perhaps any show could be titled that way if the majority of the acts are from Motown.
Again, these ads are wonderful!

jsmith
08-12-2010, 02:08 PM
Any ads for Motortown Revue shows from other parts of the US available ??
....... LA; Cleveland; Boston; Miami, Atlanta; St Louis or elsewhere ??
Did a Motortown Revue package play any Las Vegas venues ??

jsmith
08-12-2010, 03:52 PM
Guess this must have been amongst the first shows that Betty Kelly
[[ex Velvelette) played as a Vandella ........
299

jsmith
08-12-2010, 03:56 PM
The above shows took place Saturday 10th OCTOBER 1964 at this Baltimore Theatre ....
300
It had started out as the Stanley Theatre but changed ownership in 1959 after
which its name was changed to the Stanton.
The last show was held at the venue on April 17 1965 [[just 6 months later), with
the building being demolished almost immediately afterwards.

Bl**dy hell John. You've been busy. WOW. They are amazing. A friend of Motown David has a lot of the Apollo promo ads. You need to get to see them if you can

I am now going try to compete with Nomis' wonderful stories at EMI....you ready.......this is a Bertha story from the Apollo. You have to understand that Bertha is very sweet and doesn't get into "naughtiness", so when she told me this story I was gobsmacked.

The Velveletttes were performing at the Apollo and Flip Wilson was the compere. The girls had done their act and as they walked off stage, Flip announced to the crowd...I would sure love to put my needle in their haystack!!!!

It was very hard for me to keep a straight face in front of Bertha! LOL That man is so NAUGHTY and I love him!!

theboyfromxtown
08-12-2010, 04:38 PM
John

1. The Velvelettes didn't start recording until 1963.

2. Betty Kelly wasn't an official Vandella until September 1964 after her birthday. Annette was still perfoming up until them but less and less frequently. Betty was also doing Velvelette gigs.

jsmith
08-12-2010, 06:19 PM
John, the show was held on 10th October 64 !!! [[when was Betty's birthday in September ?)
The tickets for the show can't have been selling too well as the ad was placed again a few days later .........
Mind you at $1.25 for just the Impressions, Gladys Knight & Pips, Martha & Vandellas + a couple of others
........... I doubt any of us here would have bothered paying to see the show !!!!!!!!!
303
....... Looks like Freddie Scott & Carl Fisher had been dropped from the bill
... defo wouldn't have paid the $1.25 to watch from the balcony seats then !!!

theboyfromxtown
08-12-2010, 06:38 PM
John

You're now asking me to remember birthdays.....now that is asking TOO much! LOL She was 20 and I thought I was good remembering just that!

I noiticed in reply #18 there is a ad mentioning a Jackie Kennedy along with song title "Miss personality". Who is this Jackie Kennedy?

jsmith
08-15-2010, 06:13 AM
Don't know who the Jackie Kennedy was on that show [[back in 1963) ......
... obviously not the famous one as this one was [[or sang) "MISS Personality".
BTW, if we had been around DC back in 1961 & hadn't fancied a live show ....
..... we could always have gone to see one of the popular movies ..........

Down in Baltimore in 61, it was time to catch a Motortown Revue ........

This tour had Henry Lumpkin amongst its number.

340

jsmith
08-16-2010, 03:52 AM
Just a couple of weeks earlier, JB had been playing the Royal itself.
He was headlining a bigger bill that included Tri-Phi's the Spinners ........
341
I wonder what 45 you got if you were one of the first 50 to buy a ticket for these shows ?
Seems strange that they needed to have a 'giveaway' to help sell tickets.

I don't know what had happened over the 3 day period since the above ad was placed ....

jsmith
08-17-2010, 12:59 PM
From the ads, on many occasions Motown artists fetched their own band [[Popcorn or Choker's guys) plus Otis Redding also had his own band with him at times.

jsmith
08-19-2010, 01:41 AM
John,
.... we're still interested in old ads coz they tell us info we wouldn't otherwise know.
From this ad here I get to know that .........
384
Jackie Wilson was still 'top of the tree' in summer 64 [[though why he was 'Boss Line' I know not)
Even though Sam & Dave had just signed with Atlantic & were about to be assigned to work at Stax [[their 1st big national hit release would come just over a year later), they were 'bottom of the bill' here.
B B King toured with his 'studio' backing band and they played behind the other acts on this show.
The Pips were already fabulous & George was already Gorgeous !!
... and the Velvelettes were almost certainly back in Michigan preparing to go back to their lessons.

jsmith
08-19-2010, 04:43 AM
Here's another ad that following detective work led to confirmation that pleased me .........
385
The Re-Echoes were a Baltimore group that featured guest lead singers.
For the above 1964 show, Brenda Jones was filling that spot .....
She had recorded for a local label the year before
[[maybe even with the Re-Echoes backing her up .... she had also been their featured vocalist in 1963).
RU-JAC #08: BRENDA JONES -- Let's Go Back To School / Can't You See [[1963).

I came across another club ad from 1964 for a Re-Echoes show for which they had a different lead singer ......
386
I had a strong idea who Kenny was ..... so I asked Kenny Hamber if the lead singer on this show was indeed him & he confirmed that it was.

Forwarded along a copy of that Royal Theatre show ad [[btm ad for Royal posted above) to Valerie Simpson.

jsmith
08-19-2010, 11:26 AM
I always thought that the guys in the Knight Brothers worked live as the Knight Brothers for the majority of the time .....
and that when they expanded to become the Carltons they were mainly a 'studio bound' group ......
.......... but this ad and the one posted as entry # 30 / 46 lay that theory to rest .........

jsmith
08-19-2010, 06:01 PM
The Marvelettes must have been on the road for most of 1963 & 1964 judging by many of these ads.
Chuck Jackson & Baby Washington were on loads of the shows as well
..... but they were quite local, the Motown outfit weren't.
389

tallone
08-19-2010, 08:43 PM
It is amazing to me, as I think back over the years, that we got the chance to see some of the greatest acts in history, for only $1.00 or $1.50. Little did we know that we were witnessing musical history. Thanks for the post. This brings back such sweet, sweet memories.

jsmith
08-20-2010, 07:41 AM

The Supremes were playing a show in Baltimore in Jan 63 [[see ad on post #4) ...
...... but by the time they hit DC just over a week after their 'residency' at the Royal ended ....
.... they were supporting Jackie Wilson on a different revue package altogether.
519
I wonder when the 1st package started & this one ended [[as they would have been away from Deroit for that whole period) ?

jsmith
08-25-2010, 12:50 PM
And ahead of those 2 revue packages, the Supremes had been on tour as part of a Motor Town Revue from October 1962 till Xmas [[along with the Contours, Marvelettes, Mary Wells, Marv Johnson, Sammy Ward, Miracles, Vandellas & Choker Campbell + his band) -- see post #25 /26.
So in all, they must have been away from Detroit [[touring) from mid October 62 into February 63.

MORE related bits on the MotorTown Revue shows ......
.... OFF THE NET ....... "My name is Charles J. Dorkins. I am a film maker, operating as C.J. Dorkins Productions, headquartered in New York City. I had earned some fame as a skilled film technician. I was good. I had been invited to be the first black member of the Screen [[Film) Directors Guild, headquartered in Hollywood. I declined. I was working professionally in all phases of movie production.
On June 1, 1963, I signed a deal to film the Motown Apollo show, playing at the Apollo. On June 4, 1963, I filmed the Motown show on the stage of the Apollo. For many years I had been seeking to film the fabulous live shows which appeared. My goal was to repeat the Apollo shows at theaters throughout the U.S. I had a letter of permission [[from Bobby Schiffman, manager of the Apollo - January 13, 1953) to film the shows. I could not find the funding. If I could have filmed even one of those spectacular shows, I would be wealthy today. Then, the touring Motown show appeared at the Apollo, for a week's engagement. Motown probably discovered me through Bobby Schiffman. With a hurried contract and a small cash contribution, I swung into action. I had days [[less than a week) to accomplish the feat. I set up the sound recording with my buddy, Lenny Lencina. To surely capture the photography, I hired the top guys of Local 644, the cameraman's union. I placed president of the union on the master-shot camera [[His camera was slightly tilted). I placed a very experienced guy down front to capture close-ups of the performers [[He spent half of the show focusing his camera). I placed the third camera in the upper box seats. I assigned this camera to the only black member of the crew. [[We were filming in Harlem.) He was the least experienced member of the crew. But surprisingly he did the best job. The filming was not fabulous. With my concept of a concert film, I did not wish to show the audience. I was ready to roll! Except: at the last moment Local 52 [[the soundmen's union) made me replace my friend Lenny with a black soundman of their choice. I edited the shooting into a one hour concert film. I made a deal with a distributor.”

Motortown Revue: 40th Anniversary Collection included the various artists Motown releases ...........
Motortown Revue, Vol. 1 Recorded Live at the Apollo [[1963),
Motortown Revue Vol. 2 [[recorded at Detroit's Fox Theatre in 1964),

Between the 10th & 11th October, the Miracles + Martha & Vandellas replaced Stevie Wonder as top of the bill ....
..... guess that was because Stevie was needed back in the Detroit studios ....
his 45 had been hot on the charts -- but after 6 weeks at #1, "Heatwave" had replaced it in mid September
... but by the time the show hit Toledo a month after Baltimore, all three acts were on the bill .....

......... History tells us that ............
Oct 26 1962: The First Motor Town Revue took to the road ...... BUT ....
713
Why wasn't this October 1961 tour classed as a Motor Town Review ???
After all, all the acts were Motown artists [[including the backing band) .....
... ..... ..... so why hasn't this since been credited as the 1st Motor Town Revue ??
.... OBVIOUSLY the 1st one to actually be labeled a MTR was the 1962 tour as that was when the 'name' was concocted, but looked at retrospectively this revue also had to qualify.

High everybody. Wow! Great posters! My first theater engagement was at the famous Howard Theater, on an all-Motown[[except me) show. Temptations headlined, Eddie, David, Melvin, Paul and Otis [["I'm losing you" was their current hit) with that amazing five headed microphone. Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" was a hit), Contours with Dennis Edwards as lead singer, The fabulous Velvelettes, and me, replacing Brenda Holloway who was sick. My manager, George Treadwell, who handled the Drifters got me on the show. I was so starstruck, to be around all those Motown stars! Sure wish I had a poster of that show.
Never forget how sweet and kind Tammi Terrell and Dennis Edwards were to me. She'd hang out in my dressing room and chat with me and my mom. Pictures do not do her justice! And Dennis was kind enough to take us to lunch. Sweet memories.

Yes, it surprised me too. Other noticeable omissions are Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore and St. Louis. - no Texan dates either.

The Nov 28 appearance in Cheraw, SC is another puzzler, I had to look up my trusty Rand McNally atlas to see where it was as I'd never heard of the town
which had a population of 5524 in 2000. My home town, which I've always thought of as small, has a population nearly four times that - and we have an Apollo in
Blantyre [[it's a pub)

Oh my goodness, are you serious?! I can't believe you had that. Thanks so much for sharing! Made me laugh; Nov. 15, 1966. Five months out of high school. ;o) And Willie Tyler and Lester! What a classy guy. He was so great! I'm scraping my poor Sunday morning brain about the Velvelettes. Trying to see their cute faces, but I can't remember for sure. But the Tempts wore those white suits, and killed all the ladies! By the way Dennis Edwards was tearing it up with the Contours; a fact missed by No One! I was positive later that those very performances were what made the Tempts select him later for the group.

Yes, John, she was with David. She spent a lot of time with me and my mom. She did a lot of waiting around, like ladies do when waiting for their famous boyfriends. LOL! She gave me a lot of advice, helped me with my hair and kept me giggling. I'll never forget her kindness to me. She was such a fun, talented and gracious lady. I was the only non-Motown act, so I was an outsider. I was George Treadwell's last act before he passed; he was a very well connected manager, which I suppose is why I was on this roster. The first night, I came on just before the Temptations, which in retrospect was quite something. I would love to hear any stories arrr&bee, about your remembrances of that show!

J J Jackson's track was heading for the Top 10 of the chart

Arthur Conley would hit with "Sweet Soul Music" about 6 months later

So do you get any more facts on the tour from the book [[in addition to what must be many great photos) ??

JS, I reread the book yesterday, and here are a few words from Curtis Woodson :

"It has been published in both print and internet media that the Temptations and Stevie Wonder left on the trip withe troup. That is not correct."

"The trailway bus we were given for the tour was terrible. The doors didn't close properly and it didn't have a bathroom."

"The Contours were, like me, in their early 20's and were having a lot of fun. They weren't overly concerned about the amount ofmoney they were "not" making, they were just interested in having fun and chasing and being chased by all the women who followed them. "

Marv Johnson was like a "ghost" during the few weeks of the tour. I never saw him at rehearsals, during lunch or dinner brakes, or at our hotel and since he travelled in his private car, I never saw him on the road.Bill Murry would say "ladies and gentlemen it's my pleasure to introduce "Marvelous" Marv Johnson, he would appear on stage and sing a few of his hits and disappear. Maybe because he was already an establishee star he didn't feel he should be too close to the rest of the troop."

"Being new to the music scene, the Supremes didn't get the kind of reactios generated by the Marvelettes and Diana Ross didn't like it.It didn't take long for her to start calling back to Detroit to receive some attention and solace from the Hitsville management.
At the end of one of Marvelettes'performanc, the audience wa cheering for the Marvelettes to return for an encore. THe road manager sent the Supremes out on stage and the audience booed...demanding the return of the Marvelettes.

Thanks for that Phil.
Both Mary Wilson and Smokey mention details on the 1962 tour in their books also.

jsmith
09-01-2010, 04:52 AM
Mary lists most of the guys who were in Choker's orchestra plus she says there were 45 people on the bus [[including roadies & assistants), with 3 cars & 2 station wagons making up the entire convoy. Cheap hotels, sleepless nights on the road, irregular & bad meals, tour romances, problems down south, segregated venues, etc. Bullets flew at the Birmingham show and other confrontations were a regular happening with rednecks tring to provoke fights. The Contours station wagon [[with Eddie McFarland & Beans Bowles in as well) was involved in a crash on the way to Miami [[Eddie was driving, fell asleep at the wheel & was killed in the accident. Beans was in a coma).
Smokey mentions that he had a fever whilst playing the Howard in DC [[at the end of October). He struggled on for a couple of days whilst making daily visits to the local hospital. When the tour moved on, Smokey was left behind and so headed back to Detroit to recuperate. Claudette had to stay as Pete was in the army & there had to be at least 3 ‘Miracles’ up on the stage each night. Smokey would call her on a regular basis but it was Berry who told him that when Claudette was singing lead [[in his place), the crowd were cheering her on thinking she was ‘Smokey’. On November 11th, Smokey got a call from Mary Wells who was sharing a room with Claudette. Mary told him that Claudette was pregnant & couldn’t cope with the strains of touring. But Claudette was determined to see the tour out and she lasted right up through the week long Apollo gig in mid December.
Sounds like a film should be made, based around the 1962 tour & all the things that befell it !!!

jsmith
09-01-2010, 05:17 AM
There are more facts on the tour in the 'Where Did Our Love Go' book ..........
.... Beans Bowles was the tour road manager. He was tasked with collecting the fees [[up to $15,000 a night), booking & paying all the hotel bills plus gas, food & incidental bills. He also paid the musicians & handed out 'pocket money' to the acts, reported back to Berry plus kept the artists happy & in-line.
When he was hurt in the car crash, he had about $15,000 on him & he had to hand his over [[for safe keeping) to a local southern cop. Beans ended up in a Florida hospital and Esther Edwards had to fly down to take over from him.
The tour had been set up by Supersonic Attraction's Henry Wynne and in lots of cities it was a hard sell to get venues to take the whole 'Motown' package instead of just say the Contours, Miracles or Mary Wells [[mixing them with other non-Motown artists).
I guess that's why the Motor Town Revue 1962 didn't play a show in some major centres, whilst some shows that did take place were in 'backwoods' towns.

It seems that even as early as summer 1970 it was getting harder to make money booking big name acts into ordinary clubs.
....... After this show ...........
1176
Mike Athas [[who ran the place) announced that the club was changing its policy. It was to become a dance & dinner club, so would no longer book big name acts. A new bar & 2 dance floors were to be installed to make the club's layout more suitable for its new role.
So the Club's role as a venue where locals could catch all the top Motown & soul outfits was at an end, the Supremes being the last big name [[& fee commanding) act to play the club.

Love these old posters. What intrigues me is some of the song titles listed for certain acts. I have seen The Miracles Come Spy With Me listed next to their pic often for example. Was that because it was one of Motowns first ventures into film? And they were trying to promote that instead of the A side? I mean, it was not one of their better sides, and as for the film, I Do remember seeing it once, and it was beyond awful. Some of the other songs listed next to the artists pics often are B sides or lesser known hits. Were these advertised in these cities because they were popular there, and so would attract patrons?..Paulo XXXX

Is that the same Rockhead in Montreal?

jsmith
09-22-2010, 03:22 PM
It is the Montreal club.
All 7 ads above these posts were for shows staged in Montreal [[as was Club Sahara).
Seems that Canadian audiences loved their soul [[& calypso/ reggae) acts in the late 60's & 1970.

I enjoy looking at old newspaper ads, trade ads, posters, etc. Has anyone check out the Globe Posters website?
They were out of Baltimore and did all the great, colorful posters back in the 50s, 60s, 70s.
It may be at: www.globeposters.com

No real Motown artists on this Harlem bill .....
... but the Holidays were currently enjoying a 4 month stay on the charts ...
... and their label was about to be 'swallowed up' by Berry Gordy .....
... but the option on their contract wouldn't be taken up by Motown ...

Post #147 of this thread featured a show on which the Capitol Records Soul Caravan appeared ........
.... here's a magazine article that deals with why the label instigated this revue package .......
1348
The name of the female group on the Caravan was actually the Thrills !!!
Its a pity some other soul acts signed to Capitol at the time weren't also added to the revue line-up.

The above poster must be from the late 60s! That's a late 60s photo of the Shirelles after Doris left in late '68. It is
a very old photo of Mary, but look at Ben E. King. Also, check out the price of tickets! It may even be from the
70s.

randy_russi
10-06-2010, 10:14 AM
Also, it probably IS from the 70s as it is billed as Rhythm & Blues Oldies Concert.

If you look closely, the Shirelles photo in the above poster actually shows Doris, Micki, and Beverly. However, the photo is also cropped. The original photo shows all four members, including Shirley, who is seated in front of the other three.

The concert might have taken place during the period in the 70s when Shirley went on maternity leave, and Doris subbed for her. Or during the period when Doris took over for Shirley for good.
