A sad day for me. He was my hero growing up. I started watching The NHL in 1951. So, I remember Gordie throughout his prime, and even as a young player. If I had to take one player to start my team, I'd have picked Gordie over Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux, Bobby Hull, Rocket Richard, Jean Beliveau. Only Bobby Orr was in his class.

A sad day for me. He was my hero growing up. I started watching The NHL in 1951. So, I remember Gordie throughout his prime, and even as a young player. If I had to take one player to start my team, I'd have picked Gordie over Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux, Bobby Hull, Rocket Richard, Jean Beliveau. Only Bobby Orr was in his class.

Gordie was also a very well mannered, humble man off of the ice. When I met him we worked a trade show together in Michigan back in the early 90s. When he first approached the booth where we'd would be working, he came up towards me like he was a nobody. He was carrying a stack of color 8X10 autograph photos of himself on the ice. I was completely knocked out when I recognized who he was and he shook my hand. We had fun that night and I'll never forget him. Like Ali, he was not only a legend but a great human being! They don't make 'em like that anymore. God Bless his soul.

Michael Jordan, Gene Conley, Vic Janowicz and other played a high level in 2 sports. Jim Thorpe was the best of them all. He was World class in track and field in MANY different events, and also played pro football and major League Baseball on a Star level. Nobody else approached those feats.

I also remember a star pitcher on The White Sox, who had played as a regular as a forward on The Detroit Pistons for several years at the same time. Was it Dave DeBusschere?

Michael Jordan, Gene Conley, Vic Janowicz and other played a high level in 2 sports. Jim Thorpe was the best of them all. He was World class in track and field in MANY different events, and also played pro football and major League Baseball on a Star level. Nobody else approached those feats.

I don't think it was DeBusschere.

You're right Robb...it was Dave Debusschere. Most people don't remember his years with the White Sox. He was an all-american basketballer at the University of Detroit and before that, an all stater in the Detroit Catholic League.
