I just watched a documentary on him on YouTube a few weeks ago. Fascinating guy. A bit of a con artist, but he never let anything stop him. Seriously, music lovers owe a lot to him.

It's strange but I got all nostalgic when I heard the news. I remember having my first K-Tel compilation album in 1971 and I played that sucker to death! The commercials now seem real cheesy ,but Phil Kives and K-Tel filled a void in the market like no one else could. May he rest in peace.

It must have upset him when the major labels pushed him out of the market in the 80s. He didn't totally disappear because the CD helped him keep some kind of presence in the music world for a while, anyway.

I did grow up in Canada, and DID see the commercials. But, I never bought one of the LPs. I was already buying the original hit records for 5 and 10¢, and the LPs for 50¢ and $1.
