What Mickey didn't say here was that there were probably almost 2 years between when Berry met him in the barbershop, and listened to his songs, and when he hired him as A&R man for Motown. Berry first watched Mickey run his own record label [[Stepp Records), producing his own recording sessions, writing better songs, and releasing records on The Barbees, Tall Tonio[[Tony Clarke), Herman Griffin [[who was one of Berry's artists before Motown) and Leon Peterson, before he hired him.

Things don't often happen as simply as they sound in someone's recollections when they just skim over the highlights.
