Is Scherrie definite? They've been announcing it for ages as well as a Flos cd

Rick Gianatos has been updating fans about Scherrie's CD on a regularl basis over the past several months, as recently as today's video shooting.

Steve Weaver has suffered serious health issues, but has released four new FLOS tracks on ITunes within the last month with four more promised in April.

This is a tough "business" financially, I am certain.

I'll see if I can manage a trip to Bethnal Green Road next week. I was at Portobello Road a couple of months ago, but never saw any shops with a Motown logo.

The Amazon price for Bobby Darin is probably anticipating an adverse foreign exchange movement owing to Brexit.

Hi friends, the release date for Bobby Darin's "Another Song on My Mind: The Motown Years" is set for May 6 in the U.S. and May 13 in the U.K., to coincide with what would have been Darin's 80th birthday in May. Yes, there is an Original Broadway Cast recording done with the cast of the Broadway production. This was released in a one CD format and Target stores released it as an exclusive with two extra tracks. The Classics That Inspired CD's were also issued at the same time and contain the original recordings of songs featured in the show.

For a useful and clear discussion of how these out-of-copyright CDs are made, and why they are so cheap, see http://www.acerecords.co.uk/faqs#q_2940, item 12 [["Why Are You Guys So Expensive?"), particularly the third paragraph.

mysterysinger
04-18-2016, 07:39 AM
Here Here, Ace is doing a fantastic job and certainly gets my support through the purchase of Motown and occasionally other genres of music [[London American, Spector etc). For better or worse the out of copyright releasers do have a market and can sometimes be the only source available eg Hallmark's Columbus Mann album. That said, personally I much prefer to buy original and official CDs when available.

It is a huge subject though. The digital download market appears to me to be unregulated. Albums spring up all the time with dubious titles and track lists. Motown compilations that include other label's artists - and I'm not talking here simply of out of copyright tracks either.

And as an aside, how much did Frank Wilson receive when originals of his "Do I Love You" 45 sold for huge sums? Rare CDs command high prices but the artists and record companies don't receive any extra revenue.

I get slightly confused by Real Gone music. They do seem to produce out of copyright packages and yet also put together some very fine issues such as Lesley Gore's "Someplace Else Now" and the up coming Bobby Darin package. I assume these titles are sourced from Motown and the appropriate royalties get paid but can that be said for their out of copyright offerings [[assuming of course that it IS the same company)?

carole cucumber

I always thought that Real Gone Music [[U.S.) & Real Gone Music [[U.K.) were 2 different companies. The former company sourcing and paying royalties. I'm not so sure about the latter company's

I admit that I have bought a few cd's with tracks ripped from vinyl. But, if an authorized or Master Tape edition comes out, I replace the title with that one. If I can get the music in a clean, remastered form that is paying royalties to the artist, that's what I buy. Until it appears, I make due with the ripped from vinyl releases. I don't really feel guilty about that because I have them all on LP which I could rip myself, if I had the machinery and the inclination [[i.e., know how).

I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the presentation for Volume 1 of this series. I did get it at a very low price so I can't complain at all about the value, nor the music of course. However, I'm not sure that I'll plump for either of the new sets. June 17 2016 is the UK release date.

Regarding the new 5 pack of Motown Chartbusters from Spectrum, there's good news in that the track listing on Amazon was wrong, and you do, in fact, get Volumes 1 to 5. Volume 4 is there after all.

The other good news is that the packaging is very good. They are in a mini lp format. Whilst being of the thinner card variety, the covers are of the original UK album series and so each carries the proper Tamla Motown logo. Front and back covers are re-produced. I love them from that point of view. The disc labels are black and carry the proper logo too.

Less great is that the printing on the covers seems a little thin in some places. Also the sound quality could be better for me [[but I think is probable the same as on the previous releases of these albums by Spectrum). I saw The Crusaders "Old Socks" on sale in HMV for £2.99 so bought it at the same time. The sound quality here is far better - not surprising I suppose as, although it is the Verve release, it is also the Motown issue as mastered by Kevin Reeves.

The other thing, of course, is that you've got them all already - as have I, but I couldn't resist the mini lp format. I have the original BMG issues which also included the TM logos, as well as the previous Spectrum issues which had mostly slightly different covers but at least made all 12 volumes available. No more please. Why not release the UK 16 Big Hits Series instead as mini LPs.

Just a word about the Elemental releases which now seem to be more freely available. I've received the Four Tops one and it's a beauty. Mini LP card fold out sleeve and Motown label on CD. The other ones currently are Smokey, Get Ready from Rare Earth and People Hold On from Eddie Kendricks. Not bad for around a tenner each UK money wise.

I got the Four Tops Cd. personally I was disappointed with the sound quality. I think it is the same master as the U.K 2fer from 2001, which sound very dull and muted.

I was hoping for a new, much more vibrant master as that of the recent Japanese CD's.

As I understand it, Elemental is more of a Jazz label and the Motown [[and other soul releases) don't seem to be listed on this website http://www.elemental-music.com

The Four Tops CD shows "Originally released in 1970 by Motown Record Corporation. All rights reserved. P & C 2015 Universal Music Group. Distributed by Elemental Music under license from Universal Music Spain S.L. Printed in EU".

Undisputed Truth - "Face To Face With The Truth" was already out in may, bought it here in Amsterdam together with the Eddie Kendricks, Four Tops, Smokey and Barry White releases on Elemental. This is my second CD version after the Universal Funk LP Series release from 2003.

Yes I have the previous "Face to Face with the Undisputed Truth" CD so will be unlikely to buy again through Elemental. We in the UK clearly have to wait longer for the Elemental CDs to be released, but even then, availability seems extremely erratic.

So, given the earlier EU releases, are there other Motown licensed CDs already out or coming soon that we don't yet know about, other than the 7 we already have?

I am particularly excited about The Groove Governor" since, as far as I know, that hasn't yet seen a proper CD release [[yes I know about the tracks on "The Ultimate Motown Collection").

You've been doing it for Lesley Gore's Mercury albums, so how about sprinkling your magic over The Supremes? I would love to see the release of Edwin Starr, The Originals, Blinky, Ivy Jo Hunter, and even Gladys Knight and The Pips "previously unreleased" sets, but The Supremes still deserve a little bit of that love, too! My copy of Jimmy Ruffin's "Groove Governor" CD arrived on Friday. A lot must have happened in a short time because Thursday morning I received an email from Amazon stating that they finally had an American release date of August 5. By Thursday afternoon, however, I received a shipping confirmation that my CD had not only been shipped, it would be delivered the next day [[Friday), as part of my Amazon Prime membership. And it indeed arrived Friday, as promised!

The CD is great, as expected! The packaging is a cardboard replica of the original front and back album cover. Surprisingly, unlike the original, the CD cover opens like a book. The entire album cover -- inside and out -- is made of a high quality, shiny cardboard [[lamination perhaps?) with the lyrics to each track printed inside the "book". Another surprise is that the CD label itself replicates the Motown label, rather than the Soul label as originally released. Not a problem; just an oddity and ever-so-slight disappointment authenticity-wise.

The sound quality of the CD digital transfer is excellent. It was remastered good and loud -- not obnoxiously loud to the point of distortion like some reissue labels were guilty of, but perfectly loud, just as Motown Select always remastered their reissue masterpieces. In other words, it sounds great and impressive on my portable Sony CD player. There were a few shrill moments in an occasional track, here and there, which I don't recall having existed in the original LP release, but my Sony Studio Monitor headphones, which have a lot of bass response [[down to 5 hz), helped to overcome that. I'm not sure how the CD would sound on another set of headphones without good bass response, but that's a matter of personal opinion.

Overall, to my eyes and ears, Jimmy Ruffin's "The Groove Governor" CD is a huge success! At last, I can replace the download-to-CD version that I created last year and replace it with the real deal!

They did, but I don't remember the label. I think they had an Ivy Jo Hunter release announced as well. Poor Blinky! She must have had more stuff left behind than almost any other singer at Motown! Yes, and the notes on the reissue are very informative, and the mastering is excellent. I love "It Should Have Been Me!" Also, love "It's Bad for Me to See You" and "You Can't Judge a Book By Its Cover." That was an album you partied to!

ACE may be doing a great job at the moment, and although the releases are great, they are a little slow...

Personally I think their release pace is perfect. It gives me a chance to actually listen to the latest release rather than just sticking it in on a shelf and clamouring for more.

One or two releases a year isn't enough for me. I'll take download only if it means getting more out - plus download only doesn't need shelf space.

Wayne,

I can't speak for Paul but I'm sure he would still love to be doing more of those glorious Motown packages. I suspect the folks at UK Universal/Motown are not interested in the Motown back catalogue apart from the same old soup, so to speak.

That is good news about the Elemental releases. Kinda confirms the Motown period they're going for but I would really welcome them to release Four Tops Now!, the first Undisputed Truth album, The Originals Naturally Together and Definitions etc. They are doing a great job though and just about the best hope for regular Motown CD output.

Amazon UK now gives a mention to The Rita Wright Years...

I know this ain't no "Anita Knorl" or whoever wants a collection on "Linda Griner" or "Thelma Brown", but I genuinely believe it would be most awesome, someway, on a Complete Motown era [[1962-1971) Stevie Wonder singles set, Hip-O Select Complete Singles style.

Yes, I know, Stevie's one of the biggest known, not just Motown, but music biz, but that's mostly on "Superstition", "You Are The Sunshine of My Life", "Higher Ground", "I Wish", "Sir Duke", "Ebony and Ivory" and "I Just Called To Say I Love You" Stevie Wonder. Only a handful, "Fingertips", "Uptight", "I Was Made To Love Her", "Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day", "For Once In My Life", "My Cherie Amour", "Signed, Sealed, Delivered", and "If You Really Love Me", is somewhat mainstream known, but less so remembrance on "Hey Harmonica Man", "Workout Stevie Workout", "Kiss Me Baby", "Nothing's Too Good For My Baby", "With A Child's Heart", "Never Had A Dream Come True", "Everytime I See You I Go Wild", "I'm Wondering", and "You Met Your Match", let alone the repackaging of them and many others, Stevie Wonder.

If Ace/Kent were to go the composer route for Motown, I 'd expect that they would go with the most recognizeable names first.. and one's likely to have enough unreleased selections in the vault for inclusion- unless, there would be a mixture of released & unreleased recordings.

Hopefully, ACE/KENT recognizes that they appeal to an audience that hopes for unreleased recordings. We have many opportunities to obtain the released material. The upcoming projects, in my opinion, should continue to focus on unreleased rarities with some alternate versions ... or at least be expanded editions that include unreleased tracks from the period.

Their releases to date have all been terrific! That's right, "Honey, we is terrific!" :-)

Apparently this was released on 23 September. Here's one comment from an Amazon customer.

"I too have pre-ordered this and have already received the mp3 version from Amazon. The mp3 version is NOT the Supremes, well certainly not Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, Flo Ballard or Cindy Birdsong. It's the FLOS, complete with tinny, cheap musical accompaniment. If the CD arrives and it is the same it will be sent straight back".

This is also on Amazon US at a bargain price of $4.99--but there's not much info included. Who is releasing this? Has the music been remastered or are these vinyl transfers? How many eventual volumes are anticipated to be in the "complete" set?

It is a vinyl transfer set from Hallmark. Hence the bargain price.
However these are usually very good. They also did a Harvey release.
Don't know how many volumes there will be

Does anyone have any idea what's coming from Ace/Kent that was hinted at earlier in this thread [[other than the Syreeta collection)? It'd be nice to have something exciting to look forward to before Christmas!

Well this one has somehow passed me by but I saw it in HMV at £9.99 today. The Jackson 5 with 5 classic albums. It is a Spectrum release along the lines of their quite recent set featuring Motown Chartbusters Volumes 1 to 5. The J5 albums have all been released on CD before, of course, but not with the Tamla Motown logo as is the case with this set. If they're like the Chartbusters issue, they will be exquisite reproductions of the UK album sleeves and laminated to boot. Might have to get me a set for the novelty value - I do like this sort of thing. Hopefully there'll be more UK CD mini LP sets if these sell OK - wouldn't that be great, and at a great price too? Just imagine, Junior Walker, Martha, 16 Big Hits, Supremes novelties [[Liverpool, Sam Cooke, Country Western Pop etc.) all as mini LPs. Great thought;

Excuse my ignorance, but are the San Remo Strings related to Gordon Staples at all? I enjoyed the "Strung Out" LP so much, if there's anything similar in Motown's catalog I definitely want to get my hands on it!

Yes, Mary, back in the late 1960's, Motown released two San Remo Golden Strings albums on its Gordy label -- "Hungry For Love" and "Swing". The contents of both albums are available on a Marginal Records CD, although the CD is out of print and the price gougers are out in full force. Here is the least expensive copy I could find on Amazon [[U.S.) through a 3rd-party dealer. The sound quality is excellent, as in master-tape quality, although rumors abound that it is a bootleg. Here's the link:

Gordon Staples "Strung Out" is one of the few LPs of this genre that have had a legitimate re-release on CD:-

The San Remo Golden Strings albums are well worth a listen if you like the Gordon Staples kind of thing and the CD mentioned by Gary is very good [[but all the Marginal releases are bootlegs). Slightly more of a beat than Gordon Staples. They're overdue for a proper CD release.

Also available on a Marginal bootleg are the tracks from the Choker Campbell "Hits Of The Sixties" album [[Motown done in a "big band" sound).

You might like the Joe Harnell album, "Moving On" which is more of a piano based sound [[think of Ferrante and Teicher maybe). But not yet available on CD. Also not yet on CD is the Impact of Brass album "Down At The Brassworks" - a brassy sound as the title suggests.

More akin to the true Motown Sound are the instrumental Earl Van Dyke tracks which are all now readily available.

As always, YouTube has a bit of a selection if you wish to preview. Here's "Day By Day Or Never" by The San Remo Golden Strings.
