Yes, very sad indeed - a direct link to a major musical legend, and a huge talent in her own right. Martha has tweeted her condolences: https://twitter.com/MARTHAREEVESvan/status/683013826665689088

Very interesting article about her views on addiction and Amy Winehouse winning Grammys.

I was a huge fan of hers before most people had heard about her, meaning that as soon as her very first single "This Will Be" was issued, I was on it!

I did lose interest with the "I Love You So" album, but in the last few years, I gave it a critical listen, and realized just how good it is, despite it's obvious nod to disco, which I really didn't care for too much at the time.

One thing that will annoy me is that they will call her an R&B artist, when she was pop artist all along. The only reason she swung toward R&B in 1976 is because the head of the Black Music division at Capitol, decided she should do R&B. Capitol signed her right when he took over the job. My guess is that there were some battles there.

I never did buy her last pop album on Verve. Perhaps I should now.

Natalie originally wanted to sing rock and roll. That's what she was doing when Capitol executives approached her for a deal. She was not interested in jazz [[at the time). I always wondered if she was told to do a soul album because it was more marketable than being a black rock singer? The demo that was sent with her singing "This Will Be" convinced the label to focus on R&B rather than rock music and the rest is music history.

That's very true. I've mentioned it before, but the main culprit was Executive Larkin Arnold, who believed that Black artist shouldn't be doing rock or pop music. he did the same thing when he went to CBS Records in the 80s.

Of course, someone of it obviously had to do with her name, and who her father was. The label probably thought it would be cool to have both father and daughter on the same label, as Nat King Cole was one of it's biggest artists in history.

Here is Martha being interviewed on Radio 5 Live about Natalie. Don't know whether this can be heard stateside, but it's a beautiful tribute from Martha. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03dgfdf

My goodness. I've been so upset for the past 24 hours since I was alerted to this. What a crushing letdown to the world's New Year's revelry. Miss Cole was one of the elemental voices of my childhood, indeed my entire lifetime. I fully expected her to come roaring back, indomitable, in true Natalie Cole fashion. Alas, mortality rears its ugly head yet again. I extend my deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. Rest in power and peace, Miss Cole; to paraphrase one of your deep cuts of the golden years, heaven is indeed with you.

There is nothing wrong with his post. She did die of congestive heart failure. That's often what happens when you eat bad, do hard drugs and drink excessively.

Rest In Peace, Natalie Cole.

Of "This Will Be [[Everlasting Love)", "Our Love", "I've Got Love On My Mind", and "Mr. Melody", enchantingly beautiful each and every time I hear them.

Truly a name that took me by surprise when I heard the news; genuinely an awesome, shining star in her own right.
