If we're talking about Motown, i've been listening to a lot of Jackson 5 albums lately, and my favorite has always been "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" off the "Looking Through The Windows" album. Another is "The Love You Save" from "ABC".

My favorite opening to a Motown song is the intro to "My Girl".

Ah! My mind was on album openers, as in the first song.

It's now early on Monday morning here, with Christmas just a few days away and with all four grandchildren desperately excited about Father Christmas. Hard to get that Saturday morning feeling now, but easy to get that Christmas feeling. So....

"I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye as an opener to my very first Motown LP - "Motown Chartbusters Volume 3" - which I got for Christmas in 1969 [[in mono fold-down form).

I still play that album, and sometimes just to recall the feeling that I got as a 15 year-old. Dark and dull outside, but warm and bright indoors and loads of excitement about the day and what it would bring.

I also got "Four Tops Reach Out" in mono for that Christmas. Not a bad way to start a Motown LP collection.

To quote John Lennon's #9 Dream - "So long ago...."

As in all questions like this choosing just one is so hard, but......I'll go with the uplifting album version intro of 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' by Diana Ross.

The intro to "Stoned Love" was the sweetest sound Motown ever recorded.

Motown seemed to pay particular attention to both the intro and the fadeout in order to grab your attention from the very beginning and leave you with a good impression at the end.

I seem to recall reading that the intro on Motown singles was often, if not always, given some technical sound boost...or perhaps that was simply standard for the recording industry?
