This is great news, a bit surprising but great all the same. Diana is proving that she, just like many other performers is willing to perform on cruise ships. I understand not long ago she did a county fair out in Fresno and was the 3rd most popular entertainment act! It's great that she is now performing for folks that don't necessarily fit in with the fancy casino showroom crowds. Good for her.

Last February while at the airport waiting for my flight to Ft. Lauderdale I noticed their fellow madly rushing to my departure gate. As fate had it, he sat next to me. He pulled out his laptop and glancing over, I noticed photos of bands. Being a music hound, I quickly learned he had been on a waiting list for a Vintage Rock Band Boat Cruise and he told all about what transpires on such an event. Band concerts for sure, signing sessions, meet and greet, etc. War was the only band I could really relate to, but the concept fascinated me. Later I discovered there are R&B Cruises, and now I see Diana Ross is going to be featured in one. What fun! Where do I sign up? Word up, these events are NOT cheap and if you go solo, you get teamed up with a stranger, two to a room. As the cheaper inside rooms go fast, the way more expensive state rooms are the last to sell. Marv2?

I'm not surprised as for decades Diana has donated her money and effort to many organizations which provide funding for black education programs and homeless/foodless youth. Her work for A Better Chance is legendary and not only sat on the Board of Directors, but champions their graduates by assisting them with employment networking including hiring her longtime assistant Judith Service. Lending her name to this cruise will ensure a big success.

I wish this meant she would be doing cruises regularly, but that is doubtful. My partner and I cruise once or twice a year and would love to see her on one. We are big fans and used to see her 1-20 times each year until her set list became set in cement. Now we go once in the spring and once in the fall and with the money we save, we bought a time share in Clearwater FL and another in Palm Springs CA. She is still so very wonderful, but even her stage patter is the same. ........ smh.
She does a lot of varying venues. In the last year she has sold out major arenas on three continents, casino show rooms, theaters and outdoor sheds. She appeals to all ages, races, nationalities all over the world. What confounds me is how she remains so populat decades after her last hit.

The cruise is to benefit Tom's Foundation. Diana is donating her fee, I don't know about the others. 99% of all benefit concerts are with the act being hired at their regular rate. This includes Diana, Mary, Patti, Aretha, Lionel, Elton John and everyone else benefiting cancer, AIDS, homeless, political and cultural benefits. Exceptions to this rule are benefit concerts where there are many acts each performing a very short set or perhaps just one song like Farm AID, Live AID, Jerry Lewis and the like. There will be a Diana Ross Champagne & Dessert Meet n Greet for 20 people at $5,000 each after the concert.

Hmm, Tom usually records the performances and puts it on his radio show [[he had a TV show on TV One but it was yanked years ago, I saw Gerald Levert on there a few years before he died). Don't know if this cruise would be in it. It's odd because you never think you see the name "Diana Ross" and "Tom Joyner" in the same sentence so this is really good for them both. I do wish she did more cruises, I'm sure they paid well.

I agree. As long as Diane is getting opportunities to work, I wouldn't care where it was.

This has nothing to do with Mary Wilson.

But if you want to know fact, Diana Ross has 1.8 million people liking her Facebook page as does her daughter. Smokey Robinson has 900,000 people.

The "today" stars have 70,000,000.

Mary Wilson has 6,000!

That puts things in perspective if we need to put to us.

According to the post above yours, Diana is not being paid several thousand dollars. She is being paid nothing. Looking at the grosses of her concerts for the last few years, I think she is still a few years away from doing anything for several thousand dollars.

I DJ'd on a luxury cruise ship out of Los Angeles in the 80's. I'm sure that Diana Ross is not going on board as a "cruise ship entertainer" like those who sign up for the entire cruise to entertain on a nightly basis. This is apparently a charity benefit excursion I would suspect that she will be flown in to one port, perhaps stay on the ship for a day or two for her benefit performance, and get off at the next stop and fly back home. From the sound of it, she will not be paid for her performance...

Like I said earlier, they expect her to be this "prima donna" forever. It's not beneath her to do something like this, especially if it's for a good cause. It's silly to argue about why she's doing it. We're like 30 years removed from when Diana could be seen as a megastar. She's a permanent A-lister, yes, but doesn't mean she's too good for anything "low rate", which a boat cruise is, well not "low rate" at all.

Yeah pretty much, she gets bank. She knew after a while, especially if you sign just a simple artist contract, you don't get paid as much as you would do performing so she's smart to do it.

Here is a clip of Diana Ross performing on the boat cruise. It is interesting to note that she does not have her band with her and is performing to a pre-recorded track. Maybe the rumors that she was not to be paid for this "charity" gig are true and she wanted to keep her costs down in every way possible.
