In the 1960’s, the music of Motown almost at once became legendary. Mary Wilson of The Supremes reunites with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra...the orchestra heard on all those Motown classics. “Baby Love,” “Love Child,” “Stop in the Name of Love” and more!

I never isolated songs to listen to individual voices or instruments. I just listened to the song intact. But each of the parts were important to the complete song. When I listened to the Detroit Symphony Strings isolated from everything else on Marvin and Tammi's Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing, I realized just how important these strings were to the song. Even though I may have ignored the strings, in retrospect, they may be what I like most about the song.

Then I listened more carefully to other Motown songs and I appreciated those glorious strings that I took for granted. I love strings and orchestras. My all time favorite song is an instrumental.

Mary with string accompaniment should be a very nice show

They will be performing together over 3 nights. I'm guessing as much of Detroit that can get tickets will be there.

You're welcome Luke. That pic was taken in Detroit when Mary performed that the Sound Board at one of the casinos.

I'd love to be at that show. I seem to recall that some years ago, there was one with the Four Tops which from all accounts was superb

The string section was so instrumental [[pun intended) in polishing the Hitsville sound, but, with a few exceptions, rarely did it occupy a prominent place, front and center, in the mixes. When it did, it was glorious. Notable, to me, was its prominence in "Honey Chile." Those strings just cascade all over the place and really set the whole tone of the song.

I also think that the strings on "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" and "Honey Chile" are great, and what puzzles me is that they were stripped away from the first verse of the single mix of "Ain't Nothing..." and - to my ears - mixed down far too low in the single mix of "Honey Chile".

What a waste.

But then again, I'm glad that the strings were largely removed from the single mix of "Who's Loving You" by the J5.

[[Am I really hard to please? Perhaps I have such special needs.)

Ha! Speaking of which, another fantastic string arrangement!

These should be really great shows. Mary has been performing Symphony concerts for over 20 years now.

That's neat. The DSO definitely added to a lot of the Motown tracks for real... :)

Her symphony pop concerts are really special. I've seen videos of the ones at Constitution Hall in DC and the one with the Toledo Symphony and they were spectacular. The music sounds magnificent and Mary does not rush through the songs. The one in DC she did this running monologue about Black History [[it was done in February, Black History Month). She sang "Strange Fruit" and it was stunning!
