Carl Bean "I Was Born This Way" is a Motown song from the 70's that should get more airplay.

I'm walking through life in nature's disguise
You laugh at me and you criticize
'Cause I'm happy, carefree and gay
Yes, I'm gay
Ain't no fault - it's a fact
I was born this way - yeah
Now I won't judge you - don't you judge me
We're all the way nature meant us to be

Chorus
I'm happy, I'm carefree and I'm gay
I was born this way

You call me strange 'cause you don't understand
God's role for me in life's overall plan
I've learned to hold my head up high
Not in scorn nor disgrace
Doin' my thing individually
Entwined with this human race

Now I won't judge you - don't you judge me
We're all the way nature meant us to be

Chorus

You laugh at me and you got the nerve to criticize
If I were you I'd sit down
And consider what you're doin'
Love me and I love you
And together ain't no tellin' what we'll do
Yeah - born I said
From a little bitty bitty boy
I was born this way

I love you, I love you
And even you - born this way - yeah
I'm tellin' y'all one more time
I was born this way, proud to tell it
I was born this way
Gonna shout it, tell the world about it
I was born this way

Heard Time-FM in Romford .. just to the east of London here in merry old England play "You Ain't Living until Your're Loving" by MARVIN GAYE & TAMMI TERRELL a few weeks back.
It was a hit in the U.K. but I thought it was long forgotten, or in the shadows of "You're All I Need To Get By", "Onion Song" etc. so I was pleasantly surprised.

@AJK...those songs you mentioned are staples of Herb Kents show, with the exception of the one by the Supremes......

Marv, I'd wish they would play more BT & Vancouvers besides Does your Momma Know About Me. Like wise for the Fantastic Four it's like they made several great hit records besides The Whole World Is a Stage.

Its very rare if we ever here a famous B side anymore , exceptions being My Baby & You'll Lose a Precious Love. Ah such is life and the record industry as we know it....ooops did I say "record"....forgive me ya'll must not have taken my medication this morning.....the only time I actually hear records 45/LP's are on GT's Show on WHPK........and all the jocks do a dam fine job at that....

Two by the Four Tops: 'Where Did You Go' and 'I Wish I Were Your Mirror'.

On my Android cell phone I downloaded an app called 'Tunein Radio' and found a station 'Y! Motown'. The only time I heard them play something not Motown it was a Jackie Wilson song.

Kdub, in Philly, at least back in the 80's they played the B-sides regularly because certain songs were extremely popular locally in Philadelphia such as David Ruffin's "Statue of A Fool" and Martha & the Vandellas "Third Finger, Left Hand".

Herb Kent doesn't come in to good around me. I was talking about WLS. Although if anyone would play
those, V103 definately would. WHPK---do you listen to the Dusties Party? Have you tried 103.9? They've
got a pretty good station too!

Re The Fantastic Four, there is a lot of great material by them that should be played.

There's a hundred of 'em. You hear the same 20-30 songs all the time on oldies stations.

Somewhat related:Saturday, my wife and I were picking up subs at a local store and they always have oldies playing in the place. It's not a station because I don't hear an announcer. It's usually not a bad selection of stuff, though. But you could have knocked me over with a feather when the intro to "He Was Really Saying Something" by the Velvelettes came on [[just after the Casinos "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye"). That's a great Motown song you don't hear. Made my day.

I forgot, I also heard these:
-Playboy- Marvelettes
-Place In the Sun- Stevie Wonder
-Walk Away Rene- Four Tops

And this was on a standard Oldies station!

I agree. I'd love to hear Bobby Taylor's " I Am Your Man" on the radio sometime.

I've NEVER heard Bobby Taylor on the radio.
I keep requesting Supremes B-Sides to one station, but they don't
seem to have them.

I once heard "Standing At the Crossroads of Love" by The Supremes being played on our local oldies station back in the 90's.

It's also a really pleasant surprise whenever I hear a song by the 70's Supremes being played. I've heard "Floy Joy" and "Bad Weather" being played while I was shopping. There also used to be an owner of a store in our local mall who played the Supremes' Anthology day in and day out. So you could go in there anytime during the week and expect to hear "I Want A Guy" and "Buttered Popcorn". It was pretty funny.

The oldies station here in Cleveland used to play a ton of Motown songs that cracked the top 40 in the 90's and early 2000's. Then somewhere around 2004, they started to change their playlists to songs that only made the top 5. Now, they play roughly the same 200 songs. I remember hearing the Four Tops' "You Keep Running Away," the Marvelettes' "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game," the Supremes' "Forever Came Today," and Stevie Wonder's "Yester-You, Yester-Me, Yesterday." Now, they don't play them. Even some songs that cracked the top 10 like "In And Out Of Love" are barely played. It's always "Baby Love," "My Girl," "It's The Same Old Song," "Where Did Our Love Go?"

Last year, they did a Motown 50th Anniversary weekend where they played a lot of the rare Motown singles and unreleased recordings. I listened all weekend because it was probably the only time I would ever hear the Temptations' "That'll Be The Day," the Supremes' "In My Lonely Room," and Martha & the Vandellas' "It's Easy To Fall In Love [[With A Guy Like You)" on the radio.

I've heard "Remember Me" & "Surrender" by Ross on the radio not long ago.
The Same station also played these:
-Floy Joy [[heard it at least twice)
-Up the Ladder to the Roof
-Stoned Love
-Touch Me In the Morning
-Theme from Mahogany [[this and TMITM are two #1's that never get played)

When Remember Me was big, Tony Blackburn used to play it a lot - and I'm sure he must have had something to do with I'm Still Waiting being so big in the UK. Back to the subject, I would like to hear on the radio -

Lewis Sisters - By Some Chance [[quirky but a great sax break)
Originals - Green Grow The Lilacs [[nice)
Thelma Houston - Pick Of The Week
Kiki Dee - My Whole World Ended
Brenda Holloway - I'll Always Love You....

Given how limited their play list seems to be, how is that station doing in the ratings? That's why I don't listen to the radio anymore...much too repetitive, how can anyone with any brains enjoy hearing the same songs day after day?

Probably one of the greatest Motown songs ever-
-"I Can't Give Back the Love I Feel for You"- Syreeta [[Rita Wright on this one!)
Speaking of which, is it possible to download her song "Harmour Love" on
itunes or amazon?

I believe that Sirius Satellite Radio might have had Motown Radio for a while; or some other network did for a while.

We can't really expect them to do much except play the big mass market hits; they need to capture a very fragmented market and have to go for what attracts a lot of people.

Mystery singer - you right Tony Blackburn was instrumental to Im Still Waiting becomming a hit in the UK - he made it his song of the week when it was an album track and If I remember correctly he suggested Motown Uk release it which they did -on Dianas next UK tour Tony got to meet Diana and she thanked him for his support..
