View Full Version : "Ignore User"...can equal ignorance

Sure theres advantages to Ignore User button ,But wait - I dont agree with everything Jill Foster posts but over time I have come to respect her views,They are not the same as mine on some points but I would have a less fullfilling experience on this forum if I could just ignore her posts.
I had a jostle with Marv the other week on here - I was pissed but I would have been the fool and missed out on an interesting story if I had the option to "Ignore".
I dont like Top Divas agenda on promoting Tony Turner but Divas view challenged my perceptions of a certain view of Motown and made me articulate my thoughts in a way..again would have been lost if I "Ignored".
What makes this forum so special is the different characters and their perceptions..
I think we could lose something with this function...just a thought folks

I have used the ignore feature on other forums. It's not ignorant or immature to use it, but a way to make your time on the forum a less stressful one. It is especially useful if you are one who is easily baited. And, best of all, it allows one to block out trolls, and other of those whom you find particularly annoying.

Once you ignore a member, you can always un-ignore them as well. One can temporarily block someone out until your anger towards that person goes away. No one knows if you are ignoring them but you.

If you find a person's views particularly offensive to you, you will not lose anything by ignoring them. If you go through the trouble to block someone out, you will likely not find anything redeeming in their posts. Sure, it's good to read opinions contrary to your own, but sometimes people get offensive. We all have our breaking point when it comes to certain people, particularly those with whom we have deep personality differences. Think about it, moderators can suspend or ban people from the forum, so how is it any different if you to do the same? Of course you, as a member, can't ban anyone from the forum, but you can ban them from your life, even if only temporarily.

For all those reasons I mentioned above, the ignore feature is there. I fully expect to have to ignore at least one person here in the future, only because I think of that person as a troll.

Fair point Soulster.

Extremely well written post nomis.

I'm going to take this slightly off base for a sec but a few weeks ago I ran across a documentary on British designer, Oswald Boateng. During the documentary he spoke with Italian designer Armani about criticism of his work. To paraphrase, Armani admitted he was sometimes upset and or offended but once he gave it more thought usually discovered, even in the criticism he felt was unfair or unfounded there were bits and pieces of truth he could learn from to improve himself and his work. I was really impressed by his self awareness and I feel the same about your post.

I often get into a zone and ignore people, places and things [[with or without a poof be gone button:)) but between your words and Armani's, I think I'll make an effort to take a different approach from here on out. Thanks for the insight!

I don't really see any reason to ban anyone as long as they treat others with respect, and present their opinions with thought.

08-09-2010, 07:50 PM
Thank you ms. m - I cant articulate my thoughts as well as many others on this forum But I strongly believe technology in some respects is making people ignorant - Take Ipods - its given people bigger access to music and yet djing for 18 -22 year olds as I have been for the last few months they dance to less music than they did only 10 years ago - Chaka Khan,Shalamar,Stevie Wonder - forget it -They want Lady gaga and Beyonce all night long and I doubt anyone in that club dosent have an Ipod.

The ignore feature is good for weeding out troll-type posters, who stay barely close enough to the rules to not get permanently banned from a forum, or place tonnes of posts on a forum that has a small moderating crew [[usually one person) that can't keep up with the trolls. This forum doesn't really have "high quality trolls". I must admit that I've never used the Ignore feature on any forum I frequent [[3 music, 4 hockey, 2 cartooning). But I certainly can see the need for it, and would use it to save my valuable time, if I find a person whose posts are clearly a waste of time to read.

In the right hands, technolgy has been a blessing. In the wrong hands, it can make otherwise potentially intelligent people into a brain-dead mass.

It's the mususe of this technology that I dislike, as I believe that this push-button, flip the channel mentality is shortening peoples' attention span & rendering their ability to actually THINK & to think critically, a thing of the past.

Before e-mail, we used to either speak on the phone or actually write letters which we would read. Today, if you write more that 50 words, someone's getting a headache because it's "TOO MUCH" for them to read.

How did we ever survive the 60s & 70s?

I'm not into blocking any forumer because every now & then, even someone that I dislike comes up with something of value. I also believe that you need to know what those who you're in opposition with are thinking & saying.

If you don't know what the snake is thinking, how can you avoid him/her when they strike?

Most of our disagreements here are usually over some kindergarten-type of nonsense anyway. It would go a long way if we simply acted as though we were having dialogue with strangers face-to-face in the street. If we did that, I GUARANTEE you that 95% of the b.s. said here would never be said at all.

Ask me how I know.

Great Post Juice - I would never change the memory I have of watching "Motown 25" with my best Friend and his mom - today we would have just you tubed what we thought were the best bits and just txted each other, probably both watching it alone.Technology can kill human interaction on a basic and sometimes most rewarding level.

I'm a big gadget freak Nomis and love my IPOD to death but I understand what you're saying. To place it in another perspective, I remember when washing machines and dryers were new tech marvels but I'm not ready to go back to those wringer things and hanging clothes on the line. [[even though the sun does get your sheets whiter.....LOL)

I do find it sad that a family can live in the same house only communicating through text messages and tweets but I think it's like most things in life, you have to find a balance between the old and the new.

08-09-2010, 08:54 PM
Juice I've been bitten by human snakes while they looked me dead in my eye and I NEVER saw it coming. [[and I'm quite intuitive and observant) LOL

08-09-2010, 09:14 PM
I admire your use of gadgets ms m ! Your right we have find a balance but I dont think were at that point - people have chosen technological advancment over spiritual.i dont understand things like playstation games where you rewarded for killing prostitutes and police..and we have a generation of people in the world who think this is entertainment..a bit heavy I know but as you said we need to find a balance.

08-09-2010, 09:26 PM
I agree, the balance is definitely missing but try and look at it this way. You can strive for that balance, I can strive for it and there are others that are or will strive for it as well....err body else is on their own because there is nothing we can do to change others, only ourselves.

The older I get Nomis the easier life becomes when I stop worrying about others and concentrate on what I can do right to make me and the world a better place. Some days I hit the mark, some days I don't but the peace of mind it brings is a wonder and relief beyond anything I can describe.

08-09-2010, 09:43 PM
Wonderful advice,I Try to live my life that way and I thank god I grew up in the days when kids just played on the street not glued to a screen all the time,I wouldnt want to be young in the world today - I like being older I dont feel the need to please people so much anymore Ive got a nice apartment full of books and music - if I could stop my drug abuse i would be truly ahead of the game.

08-09-2010, 11:04 PM
Addiction is one hell of a beast Nomis, no matter what you use to feed it. As trite as this may be, once you become sick and tired of being sick and tired, you'll find a way to make a change.

I have a feeling you are a lot more ahead of the game than you give yourself credit for. Believe in you, find that right first step and keep on keeping on. Bad cliche's and all, I have faith you can overcome whatever you set your mind to.

Good Luck....been there done that;)

08-10-2010, 08:50 PM
"if I could stop my drug abuse i would be truly ahead of the game".

Nomis: I'm praying that God will take away your desire for drugs! He truly CAN help you to stop!!

08-10-2010, 08:57 PM
Drug abuse??? Which kind of drugs? Get some help!

08-10-2010, 10:09 PM
metamphetine soulster.i will get some help.

08-11-2010, 01:14 PM
Please do! That's some serious shit! That stuff can kill you. Good luck and keep posting!

One thing about the old forum was that it was lively at times due to the debates. This new ignore option makes the time on SDF less stressful, but also somewhat antiseptic, know what I mean? I feel isolated now, like Ii'm alone, even though I'm not. It doesn't feel lively anymore. Guess I'll get used to it, but something is definitely missing.

08-12-2010, 09:45 PM
Though not technically correct Kamasu Jr, the old forum gave you almost instant access to who and what you wanted to see, read, and respond too, just by scrolling the names and topics. Here you have to pause and go through items very carefully ...........I like the speed and features of this new site better, and I can assure you that over a period of time, and after user familiarity sets in, we'll get back to some of the old ways. But please note some of those ways are gone forever and we just may have to settle for how is it you say" an antiseptic forum" ? Now Kam, you wouldn't be feeling ignored now would you ?

By the way I wont use the ignore button, then I would'nt get to call a person out in regards to dumb shhhhhh or hijacking threads, and I've already had to report a spammer who was hawking Viagra........wow......

08-12-2010, 10:12 PM
Kam, do you think it is because this place does not have the old "hole-in-the-wall" atmosphere? It's shiny, new, and big, although I hate the colors! On the old forum, you couldn't tell who was online at any time. OIn this one, you can instantly see who is on at any given moment. Every time I come here now, I always see people.

And, paladin, all you have to do is hit "reply With Quote" to quote someone. On the old forum, you had to scroll back and forth until you found what you wanted to quote, copy and paste to your own thread, then use some means to format that quote. Now, it's done automatically!

And, this forum is much faster. I don't have to wait a whole minute for something to post. I don't have that kind of time. And, i'm on cable broadband!

I defend the use of the ignore feature, and only use it as a very last resort. When you finally get someone you absolutely cannot tolerate any longer, you will appreciate the feature. If enough people ignore those people, they will essentially be talking to themselves, and then when they don't get any response, they will leave.

08-12-2010, 11:33 PM

Do you really think that people who would ordinarily debate with other people, whose opinions they didn't agree with, are now putting those people on "ignore"? If so, they don't want to debate with them. I don't understand the problem. If someone doesn't want to read someone else's posts they won't read them. If they do, they will read them. If a person is using the ignore feature, he or she wants to ignore posts. They have more choices with this new software. So, this is more directed to letting them exercise their choices [[thus, more what they really wanted). So, why not let them enjoy what they really wanted?

08-13-2010, 06:42 PM
Paladin......how much was the viagra? Does he sell in Canada at a good price? I, too, am getting old. I bet you Lester is interested too.

08-13-2010, 07:07 PM

hahahahahaha....I saw people ignored all the time [[including me and you) and we are still here.....hahahahahahahahaha

08-13-2010, 07:16 PM
I'd rather be hated than ignored...I'll probably end up being both.

08-13-2010, 07:20 PM
I will never ignore ot hate you 144man:)

Personally, I don't mind either, especially people I don't know personally anyway but the day they invent something that will allow a hand to come through my computer...it's own.:)

08-13-2010, 07:52 PM
Sometimes I hate myself.

It's good to see you back, Ms M.

08-13-2010, 07:59 PM
@jobeterob, I dunno I used the new feature and reported it while laughing hysterically, and anyway you live in Canada, man as far as Viagra goes thats the land of the free and home of the brave........

144man : hate is not good...........that is without reason........

08-13-2010, 08:27 PM
Ms M
Hands coming through the screen could be the least of our worries. If you look further up the thread, you'll see that Jobeterob is looking for Viagra!!!

08-13-2010, 08:59 PM
...but his finding or not finding Viagra will not affect me so I'm good to go and only have to be vigilant about about that hand. Now if it turns out not to be a hand......oy vay.

08-13-2010, 09:41 PM
Very good an interesting topic. so many good points. I totally agree with Nomis here, even when someone pisses me off... usually I get a morsel here and there of something, an insight to the human condition if nothing else. My mother always called me a "Dog on a postman's leg" because of how I love to argue a topic to death, and that's what all my motivaiton comes from, not from any personal hatred. Oh.. I can hate someone's opinions... but not hate someone I don't even know, although a few on the forum I know in real life, and all are stand up people! But I love the new forum and the new features... and I'm a bitch who HATES change, but this is change I can believe in. I don't feel isolated at all.
