It was 49 years ago today that The Supremes became the first female group to have a No.1 album on the US chart with 'The Supremes a Go Go', knocking The Beatles 'Revolver', from the top of the charts. It remained on the charts for sixty weeks.

My memory is that Where Did Our Love Go only made it to #3 Pop but stayed on the album chart forever, like 156 weeks or so.

Whitney Houston‘s second album Whitney was the first album by a female artist to debut at number one. It may have taken the Supremes a while, but Whitney started at the top!

They don't even mention the Supremes here. Another reason why these subjective lists and articles about who or whom was greatest are practically a joke!

I do agree with you that charts are manipulated and not terribly reliable and most of the lists that people make of best and worst are usually just their opinions and tastes.

But the Supremes were listed in the link that you provided. In the TOP ARTISTS of THE SIXTIES section

https://weeklytop40.wordpress.com/top-100-artists-of-the-60s/

The Beatles were #1, James Brown was # 2, the Beach Boys were # 3 and The Supremes were # 4.

This is why I disagree and never take this chart/lists seriously because the Supremes were also the top female group of the 70s according to chart positions, but they never mention it. hmmm.............

Yes they were but with all due respect to them the 70's wasn't the most commercially fruitful period for girl groups in general, but you can only beat the opposition put in front of you so respect is certainly due to the various wonderful 70's Supremes line ups.

Pretty amazing for a group that lost their lead singer from the 60s to repeat it in the 70/s!

I think the fact that they were the top female group of the 70s is not acknowledged purposely in order to further the "urban myth" that they just faded away.................

I think what seems unique to me is that they were the 1st Female group to do it [[Diana, Mary and Flo). They paved the way for others to follow, that is what is considered amazing and not that anyone did it later. I believe the Greatest Hits Lp did just as well.
