Presumably not news but some may not know that most of [[All?) of the Motown Unreleased tracks previously available on download are up on YouTube in full. This one is from Motown Unreleased 1964 - Brenda Holloway on "Don't Compare Me With Her".

Indeed it is, is there some place on Amazon where these can be downloaded?

If you download a free media player called 5K, you can dowload YouTube videos and also convert the music from them to mp3. All for free!

Do we know that this "1965 Unreleased" is actually scheduled for release ... or just a wish? Curious here.

It's just a wish, but following suit ... 1962 came, then 1963, then 1964 ...

So did a lot if HipO releases that suddenly stopped. I have no quarrel with you, Johnny Raven, but I have no faith in Motown Universal continuing with anything.

Has anyone noticed that Harry W. has been virtually silent for ages? And even though Andy S. recently received a well earned award for his efforts, Universal made no comment about this recognition and any future work product. I hate to say it, but I think we are done with any significant classic Motown releases from Universal. 2015's product was meager in comparison to the past.

I'm no expert on law and rights, but as I understood these "releases" has to do with securing the rights for Universal -- that's why they are released exactly at 50 years old, the moment when the rights would expire if not "released".

There have been quite a few releases this year and last, but as downloads. I think all the albums from The Commodores, The Temptations, and The Four Tops have been made available in 2015. Only a few of these were from the "classic Motown" era [[see below) but it was great to get the later titles too. I seem to recall that Andy mentioned in the forum that he was involved with The Commodores releases, and I think he and Harry are probably behind the other releases as well. It seems the "deluxe" physical sets are over, and the strategy now is to get all the albums out for downloading and streaming. Universal is even posting music [[such as the song above) on YouTube.

some releases from the "classic Motown" era:
Four Tops on Broadway
The Temptations Show
The Temptations - Live At London's Talk Of The Town

I'm betting that the next artist whose complete Universal catalogue will appear in this format will be Jr Walker [[with and without the All Stars).

For the most part, these albums are just the originals without bonus material. [[There are exceptions, such as the download of "What Love Has Joined Together", which has two previously-unreleased tracks.) Fortunately, Ace is still finding and releasing tracks from the vault.

And yes, I expect another "Motown Unreleased" set by the end of this year for the purpose of copyright protection.

I wouldn't bank on it as far as copyright goes as the old 50 year copyright rule in the UK and Europe [[at least) is now 70 years, I believe.

Ivor

Ivor, that only applies to recordings that have had an official release.

In the 2006 EU directive, the copyright on recordings lasted for 50 years from the year of first release. The 2011 directive changed that to 70 years for recordings first released in 1963 or later. However, the copyright on unreleased recordings expires 50 years after the year of the recording.

The copyright on unreleased recordings from 1965 will expire on 1 January 2016, unless those recordings are released before the end of this year. If they are, they will have copyright protection for 70 years from 2015. So if Universal has anything unreleased from 1965 that they think might be worth protecting, they will release it this year.

We also had this discussion last year regarding "Motown Unreleased 1964" - see posts 110 and 111 here:
