Wasn't this supposed to be gloria swanson's comeback film?

Well, it was looked on as that but this documentary has info on who else was being considered for it, why Swanson accepted the part, etc., etc. Some interesting stuff on a great movie that had some difficulty originally being accepted by some. One of those films that I never tire of seeing. And Swanson is simply amazing in it. But the movie had a great deal of competition that year, including ALL ABOUT EVE. Swanson did pop up in films from time to time after SUNSET but not in leading roles.

In SUNSET, Wm. Holden's character asks her about a comeback. And as Swanson replies as 'Norma Desmond': "I hate that word. It's a return!"

Thanks M2 ,for this very interesting clip.

No, I never tire of this film, either. Utterly compulsive.

It packs exactly the same punch now, as it did the very first time I saw it.

The whole tone, the atmosphere of light and hope being increasingly overshadowed by an atmosphere of foreboding, is largely due to the music score by Franz Waxman, which is tremendous.

I've yet to see the colourised version, but I expect the original black and white version still to be the most effective.
