I remember when I first heard this song, probably on Motown Chartbusters vol 3 in 1969, that it was by Jimmy Ruffin. The song was certainly in the same style that Jimmy was releasing at the time.
Was the track ever recorded by or considered for Jimmy Ruffin?

I had never noticed the Jimmy Ruffin comparison until you mentioned it but you are so right masterblaster. This would have been perfect for Jimmy. Not sure that he recorded it though. Great performance here by Marv.

Don't this was covered by ANY other Motown artist, at least not during the Detroit years. Thanks for posting, mysterysinger.

Marv had such style. Loved seeing him live on the Legends of Motorcity Tour. Quiet confidence and natural rapport with the audience. Magic.

I first discovered this great song on Pandora and loved it. Thanks for this clip which I had not seen before. I had never thought of the Jimmy Ruffin comparison either but I can definitely hear it.

"Don't Forget the Motor City" indicates that this song was only recorded by Marv. They are generally VERY accurate.

Love this track. A smash in the UK and best heard in its mono mix.

Never thought about the Jimmy Ruffin aspect myself, either, but it makes sense when you consider that a number of Jimmy's signature songs were also written and produced by Dean and Weatherspoon, including "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted".

Love this song, along with the whole UK only album with the same title : http://www.discogs.com/Marv-Johnson-Ill-Pick-A-Rose-For-My-Rose/master/435757

The original album used to fascinate me as it had a matrix number of TML/STML 11111. I don't suppose I got out much in those days! LOL

My favourite 45 of all time is Motown 1111 and when it was time for Tamla 54321, there was a competition among fellow Motown addicts about which artist would have that catalogue number.

Loved seeing this, Mysterysinger. Thanks so much for posting.

And Tbfxt - OK, come clean--out with it: Who are the 'Mysterysingers' of MOTOWN 1111 & TAMLA 54321?

A great song, from what must be the most influential of the Chartbuster albums in the UK, in that it brought together so many of the songs that had finally broken through. For me, 1969 was the key year when we were all dancing in the street to Motown. Such a relief from all that prog rock! By 1973 I had seen many of the acts on stage, and was well hooked.

Tbfxt - Thank you. How interesting re those catalogue numbers! I definitely should have recognized M1111--one of the all-time should-have-been A-sides disguised as a B-side.

Totally agree about the relief from "Prog" Rock.

Re - "Motown Chartbusters Three" .. everytime I hear "I'll Pick A Rose For My Rose" I hear the opening bars of "Whatever Sign You Are" when it finishes, which must be something to do with how many times I played that L.P. :)

Mmm... You Got The Love I Love, a super-dooper B side to a fabulous A side, I Miss You Baby, Frank and Clarence respectively doing their thing.
