In Dion's "The Wanderer," when he sings, "There's Flo on my left, and there's Mary on my right" I have ALWAYS thought he was talking about the Supremes!

Just before Marvin sings "Like an eagle protects his nest" in YOU'RE ALL I NEED TO GET BY, he sings "Yeah, yeah yeah . . . yeah, Tammi. Listen." Not part of the actual lyrics perhaps but definitely heard on the recording.

How about "T.C.B." by Diana Ross and the Supremes and the Temptations?

"No Diana, we're the Temptations, the Dreams are another group".

In "Too Strong To Be Strung Along", by The Marvelettes, Gladys mentions 'Juanita', which I've always assumed is referring to original group member, Juanita/Wyanetta Cowart.....

The Temptations 'For Once In My Life' : "now then Paul, you're not alone" [[or very similar lyric)

...as is Betty[[Weiss) in Leader of the pack...any other performers names you can think of?
I always thought it was strange that the gal who's the subject of "Leader of the Pack" is named Betty in the song when it was Mary Weiss doing the singing. Betty [[also known as Sissy) was her sister who sometimes sang with the group but wasn't a constant member. [[Mary and the Ganser twins comprised the usual lineup as a trio.) Jeff, Ellie and Shadow certainly knew Mary would be singing the lead and it wouldn't have changed the lyric significantly to have used that name.

I know their history but didn't realize the details of the song. Very interesting.

In the song, Betty says she "met him at the candy store." But if my hunch is right, it was a bar. Bad girls don't go to candy stores--they go to bars. Bad boys do, too. Not that I would know first-hand. Oh, no, not me. As The Shangri-las once sang: "Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no, no, no, no, no." Oh, well, maybe.

Betty was in the group more than you think, she was just out temporarily during the group's peak. She returned and then one of the Ganser twins left the group shortly after. Betty did lead on most of the groups early songs but starting with "Remember", Mary took over. I wonder if maybe they had written "Leader of the Pack" with the intention that Betty would sing lead but when it became known that she would be leaving the group soon they gave it to Mary and just didn't bother to change the lyric. It's also interesting to note that Betty and one of the twins are the ones speaking to "Betty"[[Mary) in the opening of the song.
