Four Tops; observation

One thing I've noticed in watching the many different clips of the Four Tops is that, generally speaking, they all had their certian "spot"; Levi in front, or off to the side, then, in order, Obie, Duke, and Lawrence.

Was this done for a specific sound? Or do you suppose that over time, each member just get comfortable standing his designated location?

It's the same for the Velvelettes. Audiences will see [[left to right) Bertha Norma Milly and Cal. Cal directs the band and that end position works well for that task. Nevertheless, the ladies now feel comfortable in their designated positions.
