Is this gem cool or what, one of thier best ever,it just ebbs and flows and you got to sway, similar in sound to[that's what love is made of]but with it's own kinda vibe,i believe that it was a[b-side]and it should've been an a-side...from[1965-the miracles going to a go-go].

Recorded in Chicago [[on Dec 30 1963) at the same session as they cut "Would I Love You", another Miracles gem. Which gives weight to Smokey's oft-made claim, that the "Motown Sound" wasn't the product of the studio or the musicians: the artists and producers carried it around with them in their heads [[or maybe in their souls ...)

Both sides of Tamla 54123 made it to number 10 on WDEE [[New Haven, CT) on November 19, 1965, and deservedly so!

I'm surprised that the song was recorded so early. The polish in the arrangement and performance shines right through. I always felt that Miracles had a sound different from the Motown Sound.

Since the album came out in 65, I always assumed it was a 65 recording. I am surprised it was from 63. Upon further review it does have kind of a post- do-wop feel.An absolute gem with a little TLC it could have been huge.

There's a thread here http://faac.us/adf/messages/198983/193812.html?1245392824 on Hampton. He's not credited for this song, but arrangers were rarely credited in the early Motown days. It could just be that the Miracles were working in Chicago at the time.

You can see a partial list of his arrangements at http://www.45cat.com/45_arranger.php?ta=Riley+Hampton .

Were both the musical track and the vocals recorded in Chicago or just the vocals?

Both, as far as I can tell from the paperwork I've seen.

Actually, it does have that 61-63 feel as far as Miracles slow singles go. In the late 70s I used to spin oldies at a local bar in Detroit, I always opened with this one. To me, it was really like channelling some of the early sixties am jocks in Detroit. That string intro was perfect for " Good evening folks and welcome to blah, blah, blah.....

It sure is! Smokey & the Miracles' "Since You Won My Heart" is one of their best songs. And while it's similar to "That's What Love Is Made Of", I think it's a better song. Love the way it kicks off the second half of the great Going To A Go-Go LP.
