He was one of the nicest, generous celebrities I have ever met, Mr. Ernie Banks! - Marv

Same experience for me. I am very sad to hear of Mr. Cub's passing. He was a bright light in a lot of dismal Cubs' seasons. Let's play two! I was 8 years old when he came up as a rookie with The Cubs. I still have both a ball and a bat with his signatures. I'm probably one of the few on this forum that remember him as a shortstop. He was the lone star on that team for a long time. He took the perennial bottom feeder of the end of the forties and early '50s to the middle of the pack, and their biggest chance to win the pennant in 1964. It's a shame that Phil Wrigley never would spend the money to give him some help.

What a great ambassador of the game, the great mr.banks didn't whine he just played the game and played it well, many of today's overpriced jocks could learn from his great career.
