I rarely see any Motowners on TMZ unless it's Diana at the grocery or the Jacksons but this popped up in my feed today and is of some interest:

Another sad state of affairs when a name becomes bigger than the individuals.

Guess Lionel Richie was the least of their problems. Ouch! And I like Lionel so don't get any second thoughts lol

Lionel Richie was smart to jump ship in 1981 when he saw the future. They still scored with the last hit with him "Oh No", but one measly hit the band had after he left doesn't make any difference. R&B bands like them were on the way out. The Bar-Kays, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Con Funk Shun, and others stopped having hits in the 80s, and Cameo was wise to pair down to a lean and mean trio.

Nighshift came 3 or 4 years after Oh No and that was a real big hit for the Commodores.

Lionel did not help things. For years he refused to even speak to them, let alone have a reunion with the Commodores. To make matters worse, several years ago, he did do a Commodores "reunion" but only with Ronald LaPread and one other of the originals, guys he liked!

It won them a GRAMMY, without LIONEL!!! My point is that it was their LAST hit without him. Compare that to how many they had with him, or how many solo hits he had.
