Get ready, Motown fans! It’s time to put on your thinking caps again! As we all know, Motown’s major-hit labels were Motown, Gordy, Tamla, Soul, VIP & Rare Earth. A sampling of artists on each label were as follows:

MOTOWN - Diana Ross, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The [[New) Supremes, Mary Wells, Four Tops, Chris Clark, The Spinners, Jackson 5, etc.

GORDY - The Contours, The Temptations, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Kim Weston, Edwin Starr, The Undisputed Truth, etc.

TAMLA - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Marvelettes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Brenda Holloway, Kim Weston, etc.

SOUL - Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Jimmy Ruffin, The Monitors, Shorty Long, The Originals, etc.

VIP - The Velvelettes, The Elgins, etc.

RARE EARTH - Rare Earth, R. Dean Taylor, Stoney & Meatloaf, etc.

Here’s the deal: If you were relegated to a deserted island, but you could only bring along the music of ONE [[1) artist/group from each of Motown’s major labels, which artist/group would you bring? [[You can choose from any of Motown’s artists from the 1960's-1987. The above list is merely a small sample to get you started.) This is NOT an easy decision to make by any stretch of the imagination, but here’s my "deserted-island" list:

MOTOWN: Diana Ross & The Supremes
GORDY: Martha Reeves & The Vandellas
TAMLA: The Marvelettes
SOUL: Gladys Knight & The Pips
VIP: The Velvelettes
RARE EARTH: Rare Earth

OK, names who would soothe / relax my senses, in such a distressing situation:

MOTOWN: Michael Jackson
TAMLA: Smokey Robinson

.....I think that's about it. No offense to the other labels and their artists, but while I would usually feed on funk, that's when "feeling at home". This thread's situation however, probably the louder, funkier it is, would become louder, funkier, raucous and crazier when that loud and funky would mix with a more dominantly negative emotion such as "GET ME OUTTA HERE!!!!"

I would probably take a sampling of songs ~ like My Baby Loves Me, Smiling Faces Sometimes, Mercy Mercy Me, I Just Called to Say I Love You [[yes, I know its pablum but pablum is good sometimes), Message From A Black Man, Psychedelic Shack, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, long versions if possible.

Sorry to answer this way.

The rule is that you can only pick ONE from each label.

I admit that I added some labels. But, why did you show my post, and write under it that "The rule is that you can only pick ONE from each label."?
I only picked one artist or group from each label.

Motown: The Jackson 5 [[This was a hard one! It was between the J5 and the Four Tops)

Myself, still, no-brainer, Michael Jackson - and I mean just simply unADULTerated Michael, from Got to Be There - Forever Michael - Motown recycles such as Farewell My Summer Love, and releases from the 1986 or 1995 Anthologies. Even from most predictable, old "Ben", to golden hits "Got To Be There", "Rockin' Robin" and "With A Child's Heart", to "Girl Don't Take Your Love From Me", "When I Come Of Age", "We're Almost There", and "Cinderella Stay Awhile", among many more - truly, most BEAUTIFUL, QUALITY music, from a purest voice - that my opinion, even had his recording career stopped at the end of 1975, he would still be a top class legacy - before pop commercialism would consume him.
